Re: Aluminum Enclosures by K7QO

KEN;
After reading your biography, it sounds as if you ARE fully qualified.

Re: Aluminum Enclosures by K7QO

When I ordered my KAKA Industrial 12" bench shear from Amazon for $135
with Free Shipping, there were 9 available. Yesterday I looked and saw
there were 7 available. I just looked and there is 1 left. It weighs
62+ pounds and has free shipping! The exact same bench shear sold at
the KAKA Industrial website is $270 (twice the price). Mine has
already been shipped. I am expecting it to arrive sometime later this
week.

Just Thinking??

Bob Macklin

I'm 85 years old and I have too many projects. I learned radio in the USAF in the 1950's when they had tubes.

I have been studying the Burdick designs from the NC40 through the K3.

They are all based on the 4.915MHz crystal IF.

The NC-40 is a single band unit. All the others use the same conversion scheme. All the necessary crystals for the HF conversion are available.

The NC40, NC Sierra, and K1 do not have RF amps. The K2 and K3 do have RF amps.

I have been reading about the problems of using a QSD above 20M. Most old receivers had poor performance above 20M. The solution was a preselector or converter. NO MAGIC!

I'm looking to build a transceiver using a QRP Labs receiver module to replace the 4.915MHz IF stage. But I would run it as a 4.915 QSD. Then use a NE-602 mixer and RF amplifier in front of it.

My first effort would be to get a receiver working. Then do the transmitter. I would like both CW and SSB if possible. But I don't know how the SDRs generate SSB.

I have 3 NC-40 PCBs here ready to build. I found a lot of the capacitors on the parts list are no longer available. But I think I have found substitutes. I just need to accumulate the parts ONE PIECE AT A TIME when I have the money.

And I did order most of the parts for a NorCal Sierra from Germany. I hope they show up. I plan to use a DDS with it.

My intention is to produce a variation on the Burdick design that does not require the matched crystals.

If the good parts of what I read about the QSD are true it should work.

FWTW:
There are some things about the QRP Labs products I just don't like. I do have a QRP Labs VFO kit that I have not assembled. I also have their Arduino Shield with the SI5351 DDS.

I use DX Lab with DX Atlas to monitor the CW (and RTTY) bands through the

DX Lab can produce a map on DX Atlas that shows the current activity.

Harbor Freight used to have a usable, affordable magnifying visor (with multiple magnification factors), complete with an LED headlamp, for about $10. The current version, $5, is still useful, but probably less so...

... design LPFs.

Used a FeelTech FY6600-M60** function generator and O'scope to evaluate two filters assembled with standard parts. The results indicated that the filers meet the design requirements.*

The filters were developed with Elsie then tweaked to use standard value MLCC 5% capacitors. The inductors use T50-2 and T50-6 wound and measured for the same inductance.

Elsie tweaked model values: Transmission loss = -0.226 dB 7.1MHz, RL -17dB***, VSWR 1.33, Knee -2.89 dB @8MHz, -3dB @9.19 MHz, -63dB @14.2MHz, -80dB @21.3MHz.

The amplitude of the generator is 'flat' from 2 to 20 MHz. That is, lining up the peak of the sine wave on one horizontal line, the peak remained constant.

Using the generator sweep function from 5 to 10 MHz, the filter load (50ohm) voltage remained flat to about 8MHz for both filters: close to the model value. The amplitude changed quickly then to the end of the sweep range. The sweep time used was 25 seconds and the sweep cycles so you can get repetitive 'looks' at the frequency and amplitude values. The scope measurement window is a little help too.

I wasn't able to measure the notch attenuation or insertion loss. The sweep can be stopped and started but it's awkward and not precise. Here's where a much large screen and continuously adjustable settings would be needed (or a spectrum analyzer... :-)

*I would use the MFJ-259C to make other measurements.
