Re: VG3JWT Special Callsign

Fred \(VE3FAL\)

Gang:
For Saturday it looks like the following frequencies where I will be
close too:
7.260
14.165
14.260
18.115
all SSB

I will also be trying some cw and PSK as well I hope.
But look for me on or near these frequencies for sure.

I just applied yesterday for a callsign for the James Whalen Radio Club,
the call available is "VE3JWT, let's see if I get the call, will be nice
to use for lighthouse day's. Museum Ship's Event etc...

Re: RTTY ... Aargh!

there was rtty and some other form of modem occasionally swamping ET at my
end as well. but there were periods when the modems were off that he could
occasionally be heard well followed by pretty quick fade.

luckily the modems were also subject to fade but not in synchrony with ET's
fade.

Hmm,

I got on the air at 0212UTC due to commitments. Couldn't hear LL
anywhere on the band, but I could hear ET. Problem was he was swamped
by RTTY signals... the RTTY was blowing my speakers apart it was
so strong!!

So the filter got set to 300Hz!!

I tried calling ET a few times and he almost had me once (VA3S??) but
then a solder joint snapped in my paddle and I was down to dits only,
by the time I ran upstairs and grabbed my straight key the contest was
over.

The band died rather abruptly 20 minutes after the contest finished,
so good timing from a propagation standpoint!

Maybe next time!

Martin.

need to work on the equipment problems before next week!

i'm using a new tuner and i suspect it was auto tuning and clipping the
front "a" of my callsign. last night was the first time i had it on 40m
other than just doing some limited checkout. should have done some qsos
before the hunt.

i'm changing over the feedline this week as well from 300 to 450 to make it
easier for the tuner to work 80m. simulation showed the impedence is way too
low to realistically tune there.

and i found a loose connection on my headphone jack in my ats3.

i probably need to put up a cloudburner to work LL.

i'm a mess!

Hey Pete,

Yup. You heard me. Got both foxii within 10 minutes of each other. I new I wouldn't have any problems with ET but actually snagged LL first in MD. Good thing as his signal after 45 minutes started sinking fast. After an hour I heard SSB on freq making copy impossible here.

I'm up for a team if we can find a few good men.

I have Trev's old antenna up on my roof plus my rotable dipole at 40 feet. So far the Force 12 wins/ I can now, at least, get on 80.

Re: Off to a good start

W.D. (Doc) Lindsey

Gang:

Well I finally bagged one FOX, and I frankly thrilled. I got Lloyd K3ESE,
but missed Marshall N1FN altogether. Started off chasing ET, but his
signal kept getting weaker and weaker. So after ~ 20-25 minutes I moved up
the band a bit and there was LLoyd who at the time was booming in. He came
back pretty soon to my 2-watt ATS-2 signal to the K5GI inverted vee up 36
feet. When I went back to try to work Marshall, he and even the hunters
were all gone for the evening. Nuts [g]. Maybe next time, I hope.
So....I am very happy for one pelt tonite. Congrats to all you guys who
got two pelts, for sure, and to others who may have bagged one like me.

Thanks to both FOXes, who were both doing a GREAT job this opening night.
Thanks as well to *every* hunter who participated tonite. There will be
many more chances in a long season. Plus there will be hunts on 80 Metres
as well, a brand new hunt this season! Let's all go for it!

Band took a dip at 15. Thought it was over for the evening. Came back
and nailed ET at 31. The next fox was 2800+ mile hop and I lied when I
gave LL a 559. It was more like a 229. (I've got to reprogram the
keyer.) LL asked for a confirmation on the call....Boy, I hope I
confirmed the right one. Sounded like KXB...We'll see!
The band was quite in the PacNW and it made for a good hunt. C U Tues.

I guess that's a mixed metaphor - but wheeee! that was fun! Great
conditions prevailed for 70 of the 90 minutes, and it looks like
around 82 in the log.

It's good to get back to what really matters - chasing QRP Foxii!

I'll try to get the log out tomorrow.

It was great to hear such a large, well-mannered Pack of Hounds, and
regrets, as always, to those who didn't make it through.

TWO-fer

All,

Local conditions at the start of the hunt weren't that great. LL was 559 to naughta from one Q to the next. QSB was fairly fast. ET was steady but weak, maybe 349. Lots of very strong hounds were heard during this time. About 0145, LL and ET came up and were solid 579. In about a 3 minute period, I was able to catch their attention and make it into their logs.

Operating conditions were a K2 on battery feeding 5W to a 16 foot vertical dipole I have been building. Thanks to LL and ET. You did good guys.
