Re: Working Split

I just used RIT, until I had two VFOs. Here's how:

I turned on RIT, making sure it was set right where the VFO is, to start.

Then I tuned around with the VFO to find the Fox. Usually, you can
hear the baying of the pack, and just look about 1 kHz lower for the
Fox, or sometimes you just hear a transmission that you can tell is a
Fox exchange. Then you know you're either hearing the Fox or a Hound,
and you listen some more until you know where the Fox is.

Often, the main challenge of the Hunt is just finding the Fox.

Once you have him in your sights, leave the VFO right on him, and use
your RIT to move to where the Hounds are. Then you can see how far
away the Fox is from the Hounds he's working, and also if he's pretty
much staying in the same place or sweeping up and down a bit, working
Hounds on the upper and lower edges of a range of frequencies.

When conditions are good, the Fox often needs to tune around to pick
out a Hound's signal in the clear. If he's doing this, you might want
to just pick a spot at the high or low edge and stay there, lying in
wait for the Fox to sweep up and find you.

When you know what's going on and who's where, switch to put your
VFO on the frequency you think will be in the clear soon, and find the
Fox with your RIT adjustment. Now, you're listening to the Fox, but
when you transmit, it's in a likely place to be heard.

With some practice, you'll be able to switch back and forth to monitor
where the Hounds are being worked. You may want to chase the Fox
around with the VFO, transmitting each time right where the last Hound
was worked.

Learning how to jockey for position like this, and to send your call
clearly where and when it will be heard is the great gift of operating
proficiency you can gain while having a great time, every week. That's
what it's all about!

Re: Working Split

Hello Nathan - usually you go up about 1kc from where the fox is
transmitting and call him - or you can listen to the hounds, find out who
the fox is working and then jump in just a little past that freq and call
the fox - on rare occasions the foxii listen down but mostly it's up - often
the foxii will work simplex in the last hour or half hour to catch those who
can't work split or if conditions are bad - 72 Bruce.

I searched through the acrhives and looked at the website but didn't see any
information for a newbie regarding working split. With regard to these fox
hunts, how is it done? I hear a fox on one frequency and then what do I do?

Thanks,

Re: Working Split

Steven Pituch

Hi Nathan,
Yes, Nathan, the Fox works split most of the time. If things get slow he
will often go simplex at the end of the hunt. Assuming you have 2 VFOs, you
listen to the last hound who worked the Fox. That¡¯s where the Fox was last
listening. You would transmit on that frequency, or another one based on
the habits of the Fox that you have learned by listening to his actions. I
have a decent explanation of working split at my website at:
's%20Page/Radio/CW%20Fun/CW%20Fun.htm

You should join one of the teams. You will get a lot of encouragement that
way. The more hams that can mentor you the better. Don't get discouraged.
Learning to find a Fox is half the work, and a skill you need to learn. You
may not even hear a Fox for a few weeks. You can learn to be one of the
best operators by doing the Foxhunts.

You can also work the fox split using XIT (the opposite of RIT).

You have have any questions, give me a shout.

Regards,
Steve, W2MY/5

Gang,
The Great Laker's still need two more members. It would be
nice if you live near one of the Great Lakes, but not a
requirement!

Anybody interested?

Hello, I'm interested in forming or joining a team. I've never participated
in a fox hunt before, but it sounds like a lot of fun.
Perhaps there are other inexperienced ops that would like to form a team.
It'd be a laid back group to just get some experience and have some fun.

Well best of good luck to you this season. I hope you find enough guys to
form a good team! I am an old-timer in FOX hunting, having been in it for
I believe 9 or maybe even 10 seasons. To me it is as much fun as DXing!
It takes a bit of skill to compete with lots of other folks trying to nab
the Wiley One on 40 Metres each week. So...best wishes to you personally
and to each member of your team. GL and happy hunting.
