DRAFT LOG, N1FN

Hi, Guys--

Finally got this done-- sorry for the delay. I'm sure there are some typos-- I
note there are still a couple of question marks where I simply could not read
what I had written.

The hunt was fun, as usual, and propagada was, well, interesting. The band
went somewhere else from 0206 to 0221 when it came back. I'd all but given up
and was surprised to find a few more customers.

Fox log K3ESE v 1.o

I'm glad the Hunt was only 90 minutes long! For a
while, I was wishing it was only thirty minutes long!
But then, I'd have missed handing out First Ever Pelts
to WB0JNR, Roger, our Fox Webmaster, who has now
proven that, yes, he does know Morse code... my new
neighbor, Jim, AB3CV, who worked me on ground-wave
from 20 miles away...and Karl, N7NLU...might've been
his First Fox Pelt, too.

In fact, I worked the entire Fox Committee last
night: Doc, Marshall, Todd and Roger...a first! (Bruce
is on 'vacation' for the Summer.)

Total pelts, with Foxii: 39. First 30 minutes: 30
Peltii. Second thirty minutes: three Peltii. Third
thirty minutes: four Peltii.

Anyway, here's the first swing through this log
thing - send any corrections direct. Thanks for
playing!

Marshall:

Many thanks for the pelt tonite. You had a good signal and lots of hungry
hunters on your tail. I liked the steady and rapid pace you were setting
right from the get-go! Here's hoping you had a great outing. Thanks for
serving as a FOX this Summer. It will be interesting to see your log.
Earlier in the afternoon only a very few signals had been observed on 20,
but at the time the FOX hunts began suddenly there were many, many loud
signals everywhere, some of them true ear-splitters. Wow.

from the rainy high plains of Saudi Aurora, CO. I'll start promptly at

and hope you can find me within 10KHz of 14.060.

Don't forget it's only 90 minutes this summer, and propagation can change

work

Good luck to everybody, and may the Fox be with you.

Lloyd:

Unless I miss my guess (!), I may have bagged you first tonite. If so, wow
and many thanks. Had just barely returned home from an emergency CT scan
of the old abdomen. Luckily I had the K1 already switched on, so all I had
to do was grab the antenna, hook it up, and I heard you right away. Wow.
Thanks for coming right back.

Hope you had a busy evening. Earlier the band had not sounded all that
great, but at the start of the hunt, at least, there were lots of signals.
As always I was amazed at how loud QRP signals can be coming from yagis.

Will be interested to see your log. Thanks for serving as a FOX this
evening, and GL.

Summer 2005 Fox Hunt Rules

Lloyd Lachow

Since we've not been able to get the web page
updated, and the Hunt is upon us, I thought I'd post
the current rules, with dates and times for the Summer
Hunts. The schedule, along with these rules, will be
up on the site ASAP.

Rules:
GENERAL
The hunts will take place each Thursday evening (US
time) on 20 Meters, for ten weeks, from Thursday, June
16, 2005 through Thursday, August 18, 2005.
Each hunt will start at 0100Z, and last for 90 minutes
(last entry no later than 0229Z.)

The local Thursday evening starting times will be as
follows in North America:
6:00pm Pacific
7:00pm Mountain
8:00pm Central
9:00pm Eastern
In each week there will be two Hunts, with two Foxes
operating simultaneously.
GUIDELINES
??? 1.1 The Fox tries to complete as many CW QRP QSOs as
possible during the 90-minute hunt.
??? 1.2 Each Fox will have two sessions or "runs" during
the season, and the Fox's score for the season will be
the aggregate QSO total for the two runs.
??? 1.3 No later than 5PM EDT on the day before a Hunt,
the Fox will post a notice on QRP-l and/or QFOX
providing useful details such as his QTH, equipment,
antenna(s), etc. Because many Hounds read the list's
daily digest, changes after that time are to be
avoided, as far as possible. Since it's a "Hunt," the
Fox will not post his starting frequency.
??? 1.4 The Fox will operate within +/- 10Khz of 14.060
MHz.
??? 1.5 The Fox will operate at an output level of 5W.
??? 1.6 The Fox will call "CQ FOX DE [callsign]," "QRZ
FOX," or otherwise identify himself as the Fox during
the progress of the hunt.
??? 1.7 The Fox may QSY to avoid QRM, but will indicate
his intention to do so by sending ???FOX QSY,??? or
similar.
??? 1.8 The Hounds should avoid transmitting on the
Fox's transmitting frequency. Splits (separate
transmit/receive capability or (XIT/RIT) of up to 5
Khz may be used by the Fox, but the Fox need not
indicate where he is listening. The Fox can be
expected to change his listening frequency often,
depending on the number of stations calling and the
frequency spread. Hounds who cannot work "split" or
do not have RIT should, nevertheless, operate as far
from the Fox's transmitting frequency as possible, or
wait until late in the Hunt when the Fox is working
zero-beat.
??? 1.9 The posting of "spots" (or reports about fox
activity) that indicate a Fox's operating frequency is
prohibited during a Hunt, and will result in
disqualification.
??? 1.10 A valid QSO is defined as the exchange of:
- Signal Report
- QTH
- Operator's Name, and
- Power Output
Examples: 559 CO ET 500MW
579 ND DOC 5W
The Fox's information may, in some cases, be "deemed"
to be exchanged. That is, the Hound need not
acknowledge the Fox's information, and the Fox may
work a list. For example, the Fox may call several
stations and acknowledge their information one by one,
while sending his own information only once for the
list. Hounds must be operating at QRP power levels
(5W or less) if the contact is to count in the
competition. Hounds may participate at QRPp power
levels (1W or less,) in which case they should report
their power as 1W or as mW, as appropriate. Foxes may
work any station, including QRO stations, for Fox
credits, because of the possibility of multiple
contacts with stations not participating competitively
as Hounds. Hounds may work each Fox only once per
session. Hounds, having worked a Fox, must not work
the Fox again using a different call sign (e.g. a club
call). Foxes may also compete as Hounds, and may
claim one point for their own sessions as the Fox, and
one point for each other Fox operating at the same
time (this is to avoid having Foxes abandon their
frequencies in order to work each other).
??? 1.11 Each Fox will post his log to QRP-l and/or QFOX
as soon as practical after the completion of each
hunt, ideally within 24 hours of completion of the
Hunt. The log is to be in ASCII text format, showing
one QSO per line with the following information:
Time Call RST (received) QTH Operator
Number/Power
??? For example:
0101 N1FN 559 CO ET 500MW
??? Extraneous information such as colons in the time
entries, dates, and "QSO numbers" are to be deleted
from the Fox's log before posting.
??? 2.0 Hounds will ANSWER a CQ or QRZ? call by the FOX.
Hounds may not call CQ or call the Fox, nor should
they work each other in close proximity to the Hunt.
??? 2.1 In his notice to QRP-l and/or QFOX, the Fox may
include suggestions as to preferred operating
procedure, but in the absence of any other
instructions, the Hound should send his call sign only
once after a call by the Fox or the conclusion of a
QSO.
??? 2.2 At the end of the Hunt, the winners will be
everyone who participated! Certificates will be sent
to the Hound who has worked the most Foxes, and the
Fox who has worked the most Hounds.
??? 2.3 Good hunting, and make FUN your First Priority!

Other Fox tomorrow night

Lloyd Lachow

At Last! The Summer 20M Fox Hunt has finally rolled

around on the old calendar. I'll be one of the foxes
tomorrow night (6/16) and operating as LL from the
wooden living-room card table of Reisterstown,
Maryland, the Old Line State. I'll start promptly at
6PM PDT and hope you can find me within 10KHz of
14.060.

Don't forget it's only 90 minutes this summer! We'll
end at 0230Z, and for that we thank our blessings (as
Mr. Bush would say.) I also generally slow down and
work zero-beat towards the end.

Good luck to everybody, and may the Fox be with you.

Fox Tomorrow Night!

At Last! The Summer 20M Fox Hunt has finally rolled around on the old
calendar. I'll be one of the foxes tomorrow night (6/16) and operating as ET
from the rainy high plains of Saudi Aurora, CO. I'll start promptly at 7PM MDT
and hope you can find me within 10KHz of 14.060.

Don't forget it's only 90 minutes this summer, and propagation can change at
the whim of a hat (as Mr. Bush would say), and I generally slow down and work
zero-beat towards the end.

Good luck to everybody, and may the Fox be with you.

QRP Fox Hunt for Summer 2005...BEGINS THIS THURSDAY!

Lloyd Lachow

Oooohhhhh! Here's what we've all been waiting for!
Well, I have, anyway...The Foxii will be on the prowl
this Thursday, June 16th local time, (actually 6/17
UTC)on 20 meters...and they will be handing out Peltii
for only 90 minutes, from 0100-0230Z.

The schedule of all the Foxii is still being
finalized, but the first two victim-volunteers are
the intrepid N1FN, ET, operating from the High Desert
of Colorado, and myself, K3ESE, LL, operating from the
card table in my living room in Maryland.

For newbies, or a refresher, I suggest you visit
the Fox web page at and
familiarize yourself with the rules, maybe even check
out the Fox Hunt Primer at
. Please
remember that there has been a recent rule change: No
Hound may post any spots for any Fox during a Hunt.

Twenty meters has been sounding good recently, and
can be expected to go longer during the Hunt, so plan
on trying for the closer Fox first, once you find
them.

Be there! Have fun! May the skip be on our side!

LL/K3ESE
