Introduction

Hi all, This is my first time using a group, yahoo or otherwise, so please bear with me while I get the hang of it! I'm modelling mostly industrial diesels for my Abbey Light Railway layout, which is currently on the exhibition circuit. At the moment the current project is a 10hp McEwan Pratt, built entirely from scratch, rather than sensibly waiting until I can get hold of a KBscale kit! Hopefully (maybe?) Photo attached. I'll be at the 7mmNGA agm at Burton with the ALR, so hopefully see many of you there! Regards, David Malton

014 & 7mm NGA at Burton
18
Hello Mike, As you may have seen, the 'yahoo' 014 group has had a flurry of interest from the min-display at Mickleover last weekend and there is active support for an 014 presence at the 7mmNGA show at Burton this June, subject to space permitting of course. I'm not sure who books the exhibits for this event now but I'm fairly sure you and/or Neil are in there somewhere. In brief, a small layout, demo and display would be ideal or manageable. Ralph Gaskin offers a 4 x 2 layout he is working on. There is also Bunny Mine, this would be the length shown last week in a state of completion. Next year I plan to have the other section available to show, giving 7 x 2 so I'm content to wait till then. John Clutterbuck plans to be there, either as part of the above demo, or with a RCL publications stand and also has a test-track & layout section to show. Possibly you or the organiser could indicate how much space an 014 display could have, and we could work out the best combination to fit this? It would be good to make this a regular feature for 2019 as well, the interest seems to be there and possibly to attract more of the supplier/makers also. Hope this is helpful, David

Progress on my 1870s Festiniog train

Some of these were on NGRM but thought I would try them here. Now just six weeks into the build of my Worsley set. First advantage spotted over NGRM - photos go straight in not via Flickr. But they look rather large!

Moving to 开云体育
31
As some of you will know there have been many problems with Yahoo Groups over the last few years. In the last few months many Yahoo groups have transferred over to 开云体育 which provides a modern web interface as well as email posting and delivery. The transfer process is largely automatic and will take all the posts, files and membership details over. There will be little impact for members apart from a new email address for the group - members may need to setup a password to use the web interface. Here is an example of a group that recently swapped over: http://groups.io/g/Exmoor-NG- the old Yahoo group remains but the ability to submit posts has been stopped - we would do the same. The moderators can initiate the transfer but we would like the opinion of you as group members. Please vote in the poll - and also whether you primarily use web or email to read and send posts. Thanks John, Mark, Roy and Steve

Turnouts
Though I have access to a very able builder of trackwork in the shape of John Clutterbuck, it has always been a bit of a bugbear to me that while modelling in O14 I've yet to produce a decent turnout of my own. Usually it is the crossing that I get too tight, or I give up on the blades. I'll persist, but I wonder if anyone has experience of taking a commercial kit, say C+L Finescale, and re-gauging it? Or am I being na?ve in thinking it could be that straightforward? David Chelfham O14

Trent Valley 7mm Narrow Gauge Open Day 27th January
23
The Trent Valley Area Group would like to invite all members, friends and other railway modellers to their Open Day on 27th January. Please note that this is at another new venue. Due to a clash with a pre-booked Church event, we cannot go to the Catholic Church this time and so we are moving to St John’s Church Hall, Devonshire Drive, Mickleover, Derby. DE3 9HD. The hall is perhaps a little smaller than last year but there is another room available if we get lots of bookings. There is a large kitchen and so we will still be able to provide refreshments. There is a small car park and we may be able to use space at the pub (The Robin) opposite. If parking at the roadside please be considerate to the neighbours. As before the admission price will be ?4. This event should see the second public viewing of the replacement to our Henmore layout which had been featured in both Narrow Lines and Railway Modeller. After sustaining some damage at the York show, it was agreed to scrap it and start again - whilst the planning was a long and slow process, we would like to share progress since last year with our visitors. Trade support already agreed with Association Sales, Second-Hand Sales, EDM Models and Port Wynnstay Models. Anyone wishing to bring a layout, model display, demonstration, items for sale etc should contact Mike Bellamy by email mike.bellamy@... with their details. Please offer us something to fill the hall otherwise we'll all be rather lonely ! TRENT VALLEY AREA GROUP MICKLEOVER (DERBY) OPEN DAY ST JOHN’S CHURCH HALL DEVONSHIRE DRIVE MICKLEOVER DERBY DE3 9HD SATURDAY 27th JANUARY 2018 OPEN 10.00am to 4.00pm ADMISSION ?4. Ralph, Thanks for your message & hope to see you at Mickleover! Maybe we can have some 014 microlayouts at a future show? David

steam loco chassis or "aid kit" with outside frame for 9, 10.5, 12 or 14mm gauge, interested?
Happy New Year to all O14 diehards (many of whom have probably forgotten they are members of this group). Henrik Laurell is canvassing opinion as to who would want a chassis or "aid kit" for various gauges including O14. If you are interested then he can be contacted via his website at: http://laurell.today/ or if you a NGRM member via his thread: http://ngrm-online.com/forums/index.php?/topic/20793-steam-loco-chassis-or-aid-kit-with-outside-frame-for-9-105-12-or-14mm-gauge-interested/ John

Baldwin Coal Bunker

Does anyone have any clear photos of the coal bunker of a WDLR Baldwin taken from inside the cab and showing the lifting doors please? Better still if anyone has intimate relations with a real one some dimensions would be great! Thanks, Kevin.

Figures for Kevin Hughes' WDLR layout
12
Kevin Hughes' WDLR layout in NG&I #110 is very nicely executed. One item that I don't see covered is the source(s) for the figures he's used. I've reread the article a few times looking. I don't know if Kevin is on this group. If he is, can you share the sources? If not, does anyone else know? Thanks, Dave Eggleston Seattle, Washington

Lynton in o14
5
Progress on the PLR (mainly the standard gauge prairie) has been very slow over the past year mainly because I took on a commission to build all the trackwork for Lynton. This filled our conservatory and under pain of death it was finished and collected 2 days before the first of our three children's weddings this year. As per the latest post on the group website most of the info is in my blog at: http://pentewan.blogspot.co.uk/2017/04/lynton-in-o14.html Anyone else got any news that we can put on the group website: http://o14group.org/ John

Fairlie locomotives of North Wales
The David Payling book has arrived in the Harbour Station shop as it closed today. I managed to collect a copy and at first glance it is good, with lots of 7mm scale drawings on fold our double pages. At ?40, not the cheapest but well worth it IMHO. Paul

Can you guess what it is yet?
Well. We have finally made the big retirement move from Bradford to the TLC of Wales - 4.5 minutes drive to Harbour Station if there is no traffic. Modelling has been on the back burner for months whilst we packed and unpacked. The new layout shed is still stuffed with boxes to sort - not to mention it needs a new floor and half the roof replacing! But the desk is installed in the sitting room once more and a start made on two kits. According to Bob, this one has been through the 7mm second hand stores several times and no-one has started it. So far it is living up to its reputation as difficult. The bend under the front tank has no half etch guide making it very hard to bend accurately and I realise I have already soldered the bunkers in the cab incorrectly. If Paul is watching this post, you have some work to do on the etchings as well as the chassis (which I have not even looked at yet). However, I have already modified the top of the cab from Lynton profile to FfWHR. Further updates to follow as well as progress on the simultaneous build of Lilla.

New Layout [2 Attachments]
Frank, The small Barclay 0-4-0WT locos were fitted with Walshaert’s outside motion, arranged for slide valves (outside admission). The gear was simply made, with the minimum of frills and the radius rod had an extended round section that came out backwards from the quadrant (link), and ran in a guide, attached to the lifting link. See page 339 of REVIEW 72 for a notated diagram of Barclay Walshaert’s gear. Roy

New Layout
9
Our club is building a new 7mm scale layout and I have agreed to build a small gold mining narrow gauge line and it's stock based on practices used in Scotland. This is a subject I have very little knowledge about, can anyone recommend where I could source some prototype information and where I could obtain suitable kits or parts suitable to build prototype models from? Thanks, David
