Old Roy Link kit

Hello Folks?
Looking for a little help from the group (as always) I found a Roy Link Hudson Hudswell 0-6-0wt kit in the bargain section of a shop and snapped it up(who see’s this stuff in the US) Of course it was a sack of sh….. stuff but in looking through it I thought it might be the start of something? But of course no plans or drawings Does someone out there have a set they could copy for me as a starting point? Don’t know if it could be resurrected or maybe bashed in to something else? ? I haven’t actually built mine yet but I understand that the original (which it looks like you have) came with 016.5 axles so it is worth checking their length if you want an 014 version.? Also feedback was that the compensation system was very difficult to set up and later kits included two profile machined plates with accurately spaced holes for the bearings.? The kit includes two optional white metal spacers that fit behind the cylinders for 016.5 but I know of a couple of modellers who have used those for their 014 versions to give a bit more clearance between the cross head and front crank pin. ? 开云体育Thinking about it a bit more, I think your kit which is in a video tape box is one of the later ones.? The original batch were in smaller cardboard boxes.? This means that yours should have the milled brass false chassis side plates that can be used if you want to build a rigid chassis.? It also means that the axles are most likely already sized for 014. ? The original drive was through a 38:1 worm and gear (I think from Alan Gibson).? I don’t think KB Scale got around to re-issuing the kit but did produce a gearbox design that was 54:1.? They don’t appear to have re-issued any of their gearboxes but I guess there is probably something from High Level Models that might suit? ? Cheers, Robin ? You can do a new drive system that will be more reliable for the Simplex, I am assuming you have this type of Simplex, as in the first drawing "Simplex". In recent years there has been a lot of new developments with micro gearhead motors, you can get them at good prices To drive the Simplex I assume 7mm scale it has 18" dia. wheels [10.5mm] you will need the motor with the 150rpm output, that will give you a maximum speed of 8mph, I have attached another drawing set to 7mm scale in size with the motor and gear housing over laid in red, and you use small pulley's with a 1mm cross section O ring as belts, if you are interested I can make up the pulley;s you need if you can let me know what the diameter of the axles are. ------ Original Message ------

Although I never quite finished constructing the bodywork of Roy’s Simplex kit, I did get the construction of the chassis kit complete to the extent that the whole thing was a runner and Adrian said that that was the only model, other than Roy’s own, that he had ever seen operational. The original kit from Roy could be built to 14mm gauge and included an etched chassis with coarse 12:1 gears on a layshaft and an off-set vertical motor (a small Sagami). I think later versions also included the chassis but no gears as he couldn't get them from ABS anymore. Wrightlines continued to market the kit and it was incorporated into the range and catalogue sometimes with but often without the chassis. At least two of mine came from Wrightlines boxes and I recall Kay Butler selling the chassis etches separately for "scratch-builders".

What passed over to Wrightlines from Roy is a bit of a mystery as the Bagnall, Simplex and skip wagons made it into their range but despite an early Review article saying the Hudson/Hunslet 0-6-0WT was included, it never saw the light of day and was eventually included in the KB Scale catalogue. I'm not sure KB Scale actually issued any but they certainly produced a gearbox for them. Cheers, Robin -----Original Message-----

It was possible to construct the home-made chassis to 14mm gauge (which I did). When Roy gave up manufacture and distribution of these early kits (which included a Bagnall 7” 0-4-0ST and some hoppers), he passed them to Wrightlines.
