The late-lamented Adrian Swain told me once that Roy sourced all his early gear sets through him and that they were a “bit rough”. Although I never quite finished constructing the bodywork of Roy’s Simplex kit, I did get the construction of the chassis kit complete to the extent that the whole thing was a runner and Adrian said that that was the only model, other than Roy’s own, that he had ever seen operational. Certainly getting it to that stage was an interesting experience with the tiny can motor that Roy supplied becoming distinctly hot even once I had managed to get the two-stage gear-train running smoothly
