Re: Soldering advice for wiring up decoders
John,
It’s the temp the iron runs at as it’s a normal iron that I use for electrical work so I’m guessing around the 400’C mark.
I’ve never temperature tested the normal iron as I have

Re: Soldering advice for wiring up decoders
Hi John,
I use a normal 18watt antex iron and some lead solder with a resin core to solder the wires.
I personally don’t rate the silver/tin stuff as the silver gives varied results.
I only stay

Re: Soldering advice for wiring up decoders
Careful with heat and I use liquid flux for dodgy soldering...that will not to leave the iron the wire too long... Do the wires that you are trying to solder have a waxy film on them ?? They must

Re: Ultrasonic cleaners
I find that after the first application of Casey's Gun Blue, just give the areas that haven't taken, a quick rub with a glass fibre pen, then re-coat. It works for me. The finish can be a bit uneven,

Re: Ultrasonic cleaners
Casey’s Gun Blue isn’t very good for blackening n/s, their aluminium blackener works much better but still isn’t perfect. I am told that it is n/s that is the problem, sometimes giving excellent

Re: Ultrasonic cleaners
I tried an ultrasonic cleaner after my wife got in trouble for using the one at her work, it didn't give anywhere near the same result.
I have tried grit blasting but had the same result as others

Having tried a Badger abrasive gun myself, many years go - I can vouch for the general uselessness they offer. The slightly more sophisticated Paasche unit is little better. For model

Re: Ultrasonic cleaners
Paul,
Degreasing using an ultrasonic cleaner should provide a suitable surface on brass or n.s for blackening after 20mins - unless the metal is badly tarnished. I don’t use Casey’s Gun Blue
