Hi James,

Please put me down for one as well, I live in Australia, but I can send you a Barclays Bank Cheque and give you an address in the Black country to send it to.

Cheers

I am now up to 15 in total.

I have had chat with Malcolm from Model Railway Parts, at these kind of numbers the gauge will come out around ?9.

Obviously a little more than his O gauge item, but he makes many more of those.

If the numbers go up the price will come down.

I will handle distribution of these in the first instant, expect postage to about 80p as they should go in a large envelope, over seas will be at cost.

Is every one OK with that price?

Lead time will about 4-5 weeks.

The gauge will be similar to the standard gauge one they offer at present

The back to back will be 12.4mm.

At present I do not have a cost for the item, as with all things the more I order the cheaper it will be, so I am looking to see what the interest in such an item would be.

I have ordered 5 to start with but if more people are interested I can get a price on what an increased order would be.

If you are interested let me know.

Re: Checkrail and crossing wingrail lengths

I agree with you Michael that I personally would always use wooden sleepers made to fit the plan, however I believe that many would want an easier route, hence my suggestion.

You rightly point out that ready made frogs/crossings in Karlgarin rail as well as blades would be very welcome - potentially a game changer for O14. I have pondered a move into this area myself but given my lack of progress on point levers don't hold your breath.

John

Re: Checkrail and crossing wingrail lengths

George and John have expressed a desire for sleeper bases to be 3D printed or laser cut from wood. Personally, I think the best solution for an individual modeller is to print out the plans full size, glue sleepers on and then lay the rails according to his/her preferences, skill levels and desired finish. This allows any combination of PCB and wood sleepers which can be left plain or fully detailed/weathered as per John's examples. Photos of John's pointwork shows nicely weathered sleepers with a degree of finish that I could not hope to get from 3D printing. You can also add any level of detail such as slide chairs and base plates that you like.

I have experimented with 3D printed bases for some concrete sleepered points from Victoria Sugar Mill in Queensland. This seemed to be the easiest option to get the shape of the sleepers. The result was reasonably successful. However, it was quite costly.

Having said the above. I am very interested in the "Ready-to-Lay Turnout Bases" being developed by David Janes at KBscale. I am looking forward to seeing the finished products. I would definitely like to see him develop bases for mainline operation in say #5 and #6 frogs. I would also like to see someone produce commercial ready made frogs in these sizes. I can see these being just as popular, if not more so, than the industrial Robert Hudson points. This is one area where I would rather support the commercial manufactures than to do build thing myself.

I am using Mirco Engineering cod 83 rail to represent 45lb/yd rail in 7mm scale simply because of
the availability of pre-formed blades. (http://www.proto87.com/product1901.html). However the head is a bit narrow. Karlgarin rail would be much more accurate.

Regards,
Michael Milway

These look great Michael. Noting you have done these in CAD I wonder if there would be any interest in having the sleeper bases 3D printed.

Michael,
According to my 1964/5 copy of British Railway Track, the bracket holding the stretcher bar to the switch is called somewhat imaginatively a 'stretcher bar bracket'. It does what it says on the tin, I suppose!

Normally, when I design a set of points, I arrange the spacing between blades and the frog so that the closure rail radius is the maximum possible. This always gives a funny sleeper spacing under the closure rails. This time I adjusted things so that there was constant 2ft spacing between all the sleepers under the points. Plain track sleeper spacing is 2'6".

I have now run out of excuses so I suppose I had better get on and build a few sets.
