Thanks John; valuable information. Something I have not seen is a gauge similar to the NMRA gauges you see for O, On3 and On30 that give you other standard measurements needed for clearances to platforms, tunnels, multiple tracks etc. I can imagine that there is not any single set of parameters that would apply to all the many prototype railways that have existed.
This came to me as a problem when I started to put together a small APA box diorama and was trying to decide how close should the track run to a station platform to allow proper passenger egress and freight unloading.

Craig,

The simple answer is that where you put your structures depends on the loading gauge of the rolling stock you wish to run on it.

The best example of this is the Ffestiniog and the Lynton & Barnstaple, sane Gauge, vastly different sized carriages, particularly before preservation.

This remind me of the 7mmNGA ‘Getting Started’ booklet I received when joining back in the ‘90s which had end on drawings of the rolling stock of various narrow gauge lines, including the L&B and FR demonstrating the difference.

Cheers,
Andrew
