Trent Valley 7mm Narrow Gauge Open Day 27th January

The Trent Valley Area Group would like to invite all members, friends and other railway modellers to their Open Day?on 27th January. Please note that this is at another new venue. Due to a clash with a pre-booked Church event, we cannot go to the Catholic Church this time and so we are moving to St John’s Church Hall, Devonshire Drive, Mickleover, Derby. DE3 9HD. The hall is perhaps a little smaller than last year but there is another room available if we get lots of bookings. There is a large kitchen and so we will still be able to provide refreshments. There is a small car park and we may be able to use space at the pub (The Robin) opposite. If parking at the roadside please be considerate to the neighbours. As before the admission price will be ?4.

?

This event should see the second public viewing of the replacement to our Henmore layout which had been featured in both Narrow Lines and Railway Modeller. After sustaining some damage at the York show, it was agreed to scrap it and start again - whilst the planning was a long and slow process, we would like to share progress since last year with our visitors.

?

Trade support already agreed with Association Sales, Second-Hand Sales, EDM Models and Port Wynnstay Models.

?

Anyone wishing to bring a layout, model display, demonstration, items for sale etc should contact Mike Bellamy by email mike.bellamy@... with their details. Please offer us something to fill the hall otherwise we'll all be rather lonely !

Just to add to Mike's message, and my first post on the 014 group.

I've?offered to host an '0-14 table' at this ever-friendly event to promote interest in the gauge and to have a space where people interested in modelling 0-14 can call by and share ideas. There will be a couple of chairs and a short test/display track, so maybe this will tempt a few more people to come along.

My own 0-14 gypsum mine microlayout, ‘Bunny Hill’ will be there for the first time as a work in progress. This follows a tradition in that my new layouts always make a first appearance at this event! The astounding quality of the gypsum may be seen in the photo [actually its plaster!].

Any current makers and suppliers of 0-14 items are also welcome to provide?any news or updates they have for 2018. Paul Martin will be at the event with EDM Models as always.

Also, if anyone has the?instructions for a KB Scale LK03 Ruston LBT, I'd really appreciate a scanned copy, at least of the etched chassis section.

Well done Dave for promoting o14 - it needs a bit of a boost. Unfortunately I won't be able to make it, but I wish you well.

John

Hello from across the pond...
Dava, I would be most interested in the results of your 014 promotion - photos? I have committed to a display table at our upcoming 'Great British Train Show' in April. It must sound strange to you but this is the only British show I am aware of in Canada and it is only held every two years. I will have Roy Link's 1/32 'Crowsnest Tramway', some of his 16mm never completed layout and I could do something similar to your promo in O14 with my own, not yet completed layout. It might be the best opportunity to gauge (NPI) interest in O14 over here.

Craig, I doubt I can make it to Toronto for the show but there IS interest in O14 on this side of the pond. And I’m further saddened I won’t see Roy’s masterwork.

A little closer to Seattle - I will have it on display in Calgary, April 14 & 15, and finally at the NG Convention in Minneapolis in Sept.
I expect that will mark the end of its North American tour!

Cheers,

Craig

Hi Dave,

It's great to see you showing an 0-14 presence at the show. I'll see you there, and just to show that there are a few of us out here, this is a picture of the very early planning stages of an 0-14 layout based round a small workshop.?

Regards,

Ralph.

Some suggested material that you both could print out and/or have on an iPad etc.:

standards -?

list of manufacturers (I've just added Slaters) -?

KB scale industrial track info -?

Trackwork construction:?

John

Thanks John,?

The attachments are helpful. I aim to have a slideloop on a tablet so these can be included with some model photos - any of these would be appreciated.

Its good to see the 014 interest in North America, I was in Nova Scotia a couple of years ago and the only narrow gauge anyone had was G scale, so I stuck to British O Gauge.

Craig,

The simple answer is that where you put your structures depends on the loading gauge of the rolling stock you wish to run on it.

The best example of this is the Ffestiniog and the Lynton & Barnstaple, sane Gauge, vastly different sized carriages, particularly before preservation.

This remind me of the 7mmNGA ‘Getting Started’ booklet I received when joining back in the ‘90s which had end on drawings of the rolling stock of various narrow gauge lines, including the L&B and FR demonstrating the difference.

Cheers,
Andrew

Hi Andrew,

Your right of course. I have 'inherited' quite a quantity of GVT etched carriage kits so I guess it would make sense for me to work backwards and use their dimensions as a basis for clearances. Not sure how I will explain what they are doing in Eastern Ontario...

Cheers,

Craig

Subject: [7mm NGA] Trent Valley 7mm Narrow Gauge Open Day 27th January

?

?

Trade support already agreed with Association Sales, Second-Hand Sales, EDM Models .
?

Anyone wishing to bring a layout, model display, demonstration, items for sale etc should contact Mike Bellamy by email mike.bellamy@... with their details. Please offer us something to fill the hall otherwise we'll all be rather lonely !

Yesterday at the Trent Valley event in Derby in the UK, I had a little '014 Table' with my part-completed 014 micro-layout 'Bunny Mine', a multigauge test-track, and assorted items about the layout and the scale.?

The most important items were the two chairs in front and one behind the table! Quite a few people dropped by to talk and rest their tired legs [mine included]. Two visiting, long-dormant locos were given a test run. Good conversations. Paul Martin's EDM Models was next door selling quality items from his own range and imported.

The NGRM.com site was very helpful in flagging the event and the table to potential visitors, as was this one.

It was worth doing and I'd offer to repeat it. I may offer it for the 7mm Narrow gauge Association AGM show in Burton, UK in June. It would be worth having more good news updates from supplier/makers. I did ask several. Mark Hesketh and Zamzoodled responded. One report of a supplier not responding to online orders or emails, disappointing.

From the 'Review' I am impressed with what Mark Clark [locosnstuff] is doing, highly innovative and he appears to have solved the geared drive chassis problem with 3d printed designs.? ???There is good news from Slaters about the L&B coaches too. These counter the story that 'there is nothing new available', there is!

I'd be interested to hear from Craig about his experience in Canada.

Dave

Does anyone know the date of the 7mm NGA show/AGM in June? The website says it can be found in the diary but that is sadly lacking. And will it be at Burton? I seem to recall hearing it may be combined with SWING in the south.

John,

It’s the second Saturday in June, has been for several years. Which makes it 9th June 2018.

I believe that there will still be a June show in Burton in 2019, but due to it being the Association’s 40th Anniversary, the AGM itself will take place at SWING to pander to the southern based members. Albeit at a greater hindrance to those in the north.

It does mean that the room usually taken over by the AGM will be available for use by exhibits for an enlarged show to celebrate 40 years of the Association. Hopefully, some O14 layouts will be available to fill this space.

Hope that helps,
Andrew

John, hi. Narrow Lines arrived this morning. June 9th at Burton as usual. The mixed up year is 2019 when AGM with SWING and a larger Burton exhibition in its usual slot. Most competitions at AGM with extra competitions at Burton too but the meeting hall full of exhibits.

Shall we do an 014 demo for this year?

Paul.
