Re: 17 meters and 10 meters
Steve,
A little off topic but...
I saw your AX25 connect to WA3WLH-7 this morning on 14107 USB /
14110.4 LSB but assume you did not copy the response since it
retried out. I share an ax25 port up there with RMS gateway ports
using VARA and ARDOP so as not to QRM the gang on NET105. While I
usually get a few RMS connects daily as you might guess I don't
get many AX25 connects up there unless someone happens to hear the
beacon while tuning around and recognize the tones...

Hi Tadd,
Yeah, the VARA port is one of my BPQ node's radio
ports, with BPQ networked to an (X)Net node
(Flexnet-compatible) on a Linux netbook.? (X)Net is
linked via VHF to the local Eastnet (they use Flexnet)
packet network here in upstate NY.? The VARA backbone
link is to N3MEL's FRNPA packet network in eastern PA
who is also linked to the DEPN packet network in
Delaware via I think UHF, or maybe they switched to a
VARA backbone link, I can't remember.? No internet
links involved, all RF which is what we're pushing
for.? The VARA link moves BBS mail between the NY and
PA/DE networks 24/7.? For that purpose, it works very
well, far beyond 300bd ax.25.? A disadvantage of VARA
is that it's a Windows program.? It will run in Linux
using WINE, which I had up and running, but the
particular Linux laptop I used for that must have
awful shielding because I couldn't get ALC down to
zero on HF no matter what audio settings I tried.? So
for now, it's running on an old Win7 laptop, which
amazingly has been running issue-free for over a year,
no reboots necessary.? VARA will run on Rapsberry's as
well, but I've never tried it.? Glenn N3MEL has also
added a couple more networks on the east coast using
his VARA link, including night-time to Wisconsin.

My first AX25 HF packet node is up!
Greetings,
I've set up a BPQCHAT/BPQBBS node in DM14. We'll see how it goes. I set up the node to the best of my abilities to adhere to the net guidelines posted.
I will be writing up a guide on my blog for fellow mastodon radio users so don't be surprised to see some influx of activity. We're interested in seeing what the state of HF packet is ?and possibly setting up our own network just to see what the exercise is like but wanted to get our feet wet here first. Most of us are technically literate radio amateurs and some have prior packet networking experience.
Station here is an FT-897D @ 100W?w/ SCU-17 & RPi4b > LDG 600 PRO II > 1:1 Choke > Open wire line fed nonresonant dipole @ 7.5m AGL
The station is currently running Raspberry Pi OS, linpbq, direwolf, hamlib, and QtTermTCP all compiled from the latest source I could find.
I've decoded some DX EU packets already and am regularly hearing the East Coast US so RX should be good to go. Tested TX with tones to set the level.
Let me know if I'm doing anything wrong, I'm here to soak up the technical tidbits.
Best,
Chris, N6CTA

Re: why do people persist with AX.25 when more robust modes now exist?
Hi David,
Do you have any noise interfering with the incoming packets?? For a while here, the "smart" meter that the electric company installed at the house would periodically generate so much hash, it made packet decoding on HF right up through UHF completely undecodable.? It doesn't take much to interfere with decoding the AFSK modes, a little noise wrecks it.? Lately I was having trouble decoding packets on a UHF backbone link from a local node, making it unusable, but I was able to trace it to a noisy external VGA-HDMI converter we were using with one of the computers.? I got rid of the converter and all is well again. ? A signal can sound good and be strong, but if there's any other audible pops, scratches, or whatever mixed in, it will cause problems.

Re: why do people persist with AX.25 when more robust modes now exist?
Garry AE5HL you are in Albuquerque, right next to a big cluster of packet stations in TX and across the South, plus the guys to the west in the San Diego area. I’m in UT, where the nearest packet guys are in CO or CA. Whether I’m using 20m or 40m, it doesn't matter. No packets decoded. ? I’m using Soundmodem, which has worked just fine for me on 30m APRS. I’ve tried various wire antennas at my QTH – EFHW, dipoles in inverted-V, etc. And I’ve tried going up into the Wasatch Mountains to get away from RFI. Doesn’t make much difference. I’ve decoded a few packets, which shows that my setup is kind-of working. But it’s very rare for me to decode anything and I’ve never been able to connect to a node, except the one in Clearfield UT I mentioned that has a Vara port. ? My setup is typically a Xiegu G90 (20w) transceiver, Digirig interface, Microsoft Surface Go running Soundmodem and EasyTerm, and a wire antenna of some kind (40m EFHW or 20/40m linked dipole, supported by a 26 ft telescoping fiberglass pole). I’ll accept that my transmitter is on the weak side, but the main issue is lack of reception. ?

Re: why do people persist with AX.25 when more robust modes now exist?
Hi David,
In case this helps, these are the things that commonly trip me up and frustrate me: - Wrong sound card and/or mic device selected - Wrong baud rate, I forgot to switch between 300 and 1200 when changing from HF to VHF or vice versa - Wrong sideband on HF, where packet is LSB, regardless of band - Filter on the radio is wrong, noise filtering is enabled or dynamic notch filter left on (I use it often to tune out the tune-ups on SSB voice) - Rear output on the radio isn't enabled for digital mode or I hit LSB and not LSB-D for digital work. Sometimes when I flash channels to the radio that config gets poached on the FT-991a. - Bandwidth not set correctly? - I bumped the dial or RIT knob, forgot to lock the dial - I was experimenting with another TNC or radio and forgot to change the COM port or IP back - Right station, wrong frequency? - Center frequency got changed on the SoundModem software?
I've done it all, in my few years with a radio. I'm a professional newb, an amateur. LOL
I hope you find this helpful, Brad Brown, KC1JMH

For that purpose, it works very well, far beyond 300bd ax.25.? A disadvantage of VARA is that it's a Windows program.? It will run in Linux using WINE, which I had up and running, but the particular Linux laptop I used for that must have awful shielding because I couldn't get ALC down to zero on HF no matter what audio settings I tried.? So for now, it's running on an old Win7 laptop, which amazingly has been running issue-free for over a year, no reboots necessary.? VARA will run on Rapsberry's as well, but I've never tried it.? Glenn N3MEL has also added a couple more networks on the east coast using his VARA link, including night-time to Wisconsin.

Re: why do people persist with AX.25 when more robust modes now exist?
I suspect this is more of an antenna problem, or possibly with your TNC (software?). I was up and running in short order with an end fed and a Kam XL...
What is your setup?
