Re: Jamming???
开云体育Network105 has been on freq since the mid 1980s. While no one owns a freq, I would have thought the VARA folks would be kind enough to observe a gentleman's agreement.Maybe we should use a VARA freq to make our initial packet link and see how that goes?? 14.105 is the calling frequency for Vara HF.

I hear you on the steep learning curve, the BPQ groups.io is very active so lots of help is available.
I forgot to mention, to also supports Winlink gateways too.
When you’re ready, drop by.

开云体育Yes, assuming you have proper security in place for inbound connections, such as VPN, yes, I can fully use the TNC remotely, over the internet. On Mar 15, 2025, at 9:55?AM, Daniel - N0BN via groups.io <lostpark3@...> wrote:

Thanks, Jim.? I already have steep learning curve projects going, and am trying to avoid any others.

Is there a BPQ/Raspberry Pi for dummies tutorial somewhere?? Step by step instructions, and/or plug and play options?
?
Sincerely thanks!

Re: Reconfiguring for HF and VHF packet, telnet, Winlink RMS, etc.
Hi Daniel,
Welcome to packet radio! ?You’re on the right path from what I have read above.
The next logical step is to add a bbs/node software, what I use is BPQ, the learning curve
is steep, but once you have it going, it’s stable, it will give you access to all your radio ports and internet access as well. ?It runs on windows or Linux, I have mine on a rasPI, which frees up my laptop for portable use. ?On the laptop I run Outpost packet manager which has an email like interface to packet radio, it can talk directly to a tnc, or access my node over internet.?
check them both out. ?You can find my station on 14.105 or 7.104 LSB 73

Re: Reconfiguring for HF and VHF packet, telnet, Winlink RMS, etc.
Thanks again, Jesse.?
?
If I understand correctly,? your system would give me remote internet access to my computer but not to the TNC itself, right? I looked at the KAM PLUS manual last night and didn't see an ethernet port or mention of any internet connectivity options.?
?
I think the Kantronics units already allow remote access by RF.

Re: Reconfiguring for HF and VHF packet, telnet, Winlink RMS, etc.
开云体育?Hi Daniel, I’m not sure if this is helpful for you, but I recently experimented with remote access to my TNCs, and it works well. ?I use PuTTY for windows as a terminal when sitting at the desk, and a saved profile for each TNC. ? I enabled SSH for windows, allowing similar command line terminal found in Linux, remotely accessible. I then used PLINK, which comes with PuTTY, it’s in the same folder. ?PLINK bridges PuTTY over a command line - so I connect to my VPN if outside my network, then use an SSH client (even works on an iPhone), start PLINK and then I’ve got a terminal connection to my TNC(s). Of course if you have a larger device, like a tablet or laptop, remote desktop connection is far better. ?The setup I describe is good for small screens and very light portable devices, like a cardputer or iPhone. 73, On Mar 14, 2025, at 8:46?PM, Daniel - N0BN via groups.io <lostpark3@...> wrote:

开云体育The KAM All mode also has the ability to bridge HF and VHF streams, it has two radio ports, one for HF and one for VHF. ?I use one of these, with the latest firmware.? On Mar 14, 2025, at 5:04?PM, Daniel - N0BN via groups.io <lostpark3@...> wrote:

Reconfiguring for HF and VHF packet, telnet, Winlink RMS, etc.
I'm trying to figure out how to expand my packet/digital system and also make it more resilient.? I'm totally confused with all the options, and I would really prefer to not have to learn and struggle with a lot of new protocols. I have searched prior messages but didn't find anything that answered my questions.? If there is one or more, please let me know.? I don't like asking questions when the answers are already out there somewhere.
?
I have had my 145.050 packet station running for many years using my AEA PK232M.? My radio is a Kenwood TH-G71 with a 70 watt amplifier.? My antenna is an Arrow J-pole up perhaps 30 feet.? It may be relevant that I have another similar Arrow J-pole connected to the VHF port of the Yaesu FT857 mentioned below.? I also have a spare Yaesu FT-2900R, currently used for FM voice but which could be used for packet.
?
In the last few months, I have added an HF station on 14105 LSB using my Yaesu FT857, and SoundModem and EasyTerm with a SignaLink. My antenna is an NVIS Chameleon Emcomm II up about 10 feet.
?
My computer is an Evolve III Maestro Windows 10 laptop which operates on 12 VDC ($79.99 at Microcenter).? When I'm away from home I disconnect the internet and pause Windows updates.? The laptop is fairly new, and the built-in battery works as a temporary UPS, and I have another UPS as backup for the radios, TNC and SignaLink.?
?
My station is in a somewhat remote location, but I have reliable RF access to several Denver Front Range BBS, digipeaters/nodes and Winlink RMS gateways.
?
I have another AEA PK232M, and one each of a KPC3+, KPC3 and Kantronics PC9612 Plus, either as backups or to integrate as part of an upgrade expansion.
?
My budget and computer skills are somewhat limited although not non-existent!
?
1) It seems to me a hardware TNC system is more resilient than a soundcard system, and because of that, I'm considering using the PK232M for HF, and the KPC3+ for VHF. I believe keeping the laptop running poses an additional vulnerability.
?
2) It would be great to have a port between the now totally independent stations: HF-VHF, and VHF-HF.
?
3) It would be great to have a telnet port.? (For the last couple of years, I've had reliable internet using StarLink.)
?
4) It would be great to have a VHF Winlink RMS gateway but that would require connecting another radio for a separate VHF frequency than the one used for packet. (Maybe the Winlink gateway could solely be based on telnet access rather than RF?)
?
?Please ask any questions and provide any suggestions or comments you might have.? If you want to check out my current setup, my HF station is N0BN-1 and N0BN-7 on 14105, and my VHF station on 145.050 is accessible via N0HI-1, C 3 AB0VZ-7, C N0BN-1 or N0BN-7.
?
I may ask other questions on other forums as well, but my primary focus is on RF packet, with internet-based functions a second priority.
?
Several of you nationally and locally have been helpful already in other ways.? Thanks in advance for some more help, and 73,
?

Re: Packet tone pair for Kantronics KAM XL
Hi Randy,
you can set the modem tone’s using Mark 1600, and Space 1800 , according to the manual mark/space are used for hf packet, be sure to set mark first, then space. Now you can set your dial to 14.105 and be on frequency. ?An alternative is to set the dial frequency higher for use with the default tones, either method will work fine.
the default tones are used when running vhf/uhf packet as that is the most common use of the modem, but with proper setup will work on hf as well.?
for RTTY, set Shift to 170 and enter rtty mode and your set to go, to return to hf packet, reset mark space to 1600/1800 and your set to go jim KI0BK? |
