AJ, are you jumping ship?

"Jonathan Peakall"

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

AJ, All,
?
Are you moving to the new group? Are you going to moderate? This list is well kept, and I know as you had to straighten me out about snipping post to a minimum :-0
?
Anyway, I'm all for the move if AJ is going to keep moderating, or at least some other grownup. (Which rules me out :-0 )
?
And in any case, thanks for all the effort AJ!
?
Jonathan
?

Firstly, thanks AJ for your efforts with this group.

The alternative, and in my opinion the way to go, is to move the list to
a privately operated server such as the several that have volunteered

not likely to go away and is probably going to be better managed. I
like the MailMan system which is why I use it for my mailing lists.
The problem with the private model is that we're at the mercy of an individual. If you look at the archives at the Yahoo group you will see that AJ has been the sole moderator precisely because the group is privately owned, and the owner vanished. The solution is to spread ownership a bit wider, which Nick seems open to.

If you're worried about Google groups going away, then by all means mirror the group on your private server, like Nick was doing at Google Groups before this recent upheaval. You could even make that archive public.

I'd also strongly advocate that we do not move to a web forum. To me neonixie-l at Yahoo is a mailing list. It may be something else to others, but to me that is a critical feature - I can process email much more flexibly than yet another web forum that requires me to visit it, that can disappear at any moment, etc.

Which is not to say that we can't have both: Google Groups is the future, I humbly suggest.

I also vote for archiving the Yahoo stuff.

cheers

I too have jumped over to Google. I also think it would be good to keep this group as an archive but move all the great stuff over to the new group before something terrible happens over here.

Please be aware that this group no longer synchronises to the Google group of the same name...

Excellent suggestion!

One item to remember is that the existing yahoo forum can be deleted by it's owner -Ray So it might be wise to copy all files/photo/etc contents now.

Taking it even further:

Although I'd never think the Google group might be lost, perhaps someone could propose a way to ensure it couldn't be?

This is a bit of an anachronism as the Google group is currently set to be a
remote archive of the Yahoo group. If I turn that feature off, you will be
able to select "individual emails" but the Google group will no longer
automatically synchronise.

I can set you to "individual emails" after you've subscribed (just done it
for you, Joe), but because I now allow posting to the Google group, it seems
to lose the plot a bit...

Interestingly (and sadly), the Yahoo! spell-checker doesn't recognise
"Google". Petty, or what?

What do people want? Shall I turn off synchronisation (after all, the Yahoo!
group is now moribund...)

Cheers

I say we kill off the Yahoo version as soon as possible and transition to
Google sooner rather than later. I'm more a lurker than a poster, but I
still value the group's advice and congeniality immensely.

Also, it seems when I post a message to the new list it gets sent to the yahoo

Yeah,

I also just joined the google group:

When I logged in, this morning (in Los Angeles, same time zone as Yahoo), I noticed they switched back to the old format. I suspect that they got flooded by a mass of angry responses. An internet version of the angry mob:

I guess every generation of 'script kiddies' has to learn this lesson. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Innovation is great, but have the people come to you, don't force it upon them.

Google seems (cross my fingers) to know this, and has kept their main page very simple for all these years. They don't fill it full of crap, with ads all over the place from advertisers, that have fancy 100MB ads that are fed from an old '386 server, at 2 bits/minute, and it won't let you do anything until the ad is fully uploaded.

Yahoo is doomed, and I ain't crying.
