SWR vs. Resonance
146
Hey there knowladge base people, I¡¯m H4 user. I¡¯ve been tuning some EFHW`s and checking various UHF/VHF aerials for handhelds for a while now. HF¡¯ I¡¯ve build 49:1 un un 20m wire for 7,14,21,28 mhz frequencies. Usually display set 6-29Mhz and calibrate VNA. During the tuning proces I usually make the wire little longer and than shorten it by 15-20cm and than watch the SWR and resonance on freq. I intend to use. Here is the question: Why does the resonant frequency and SWR are not same? From previous discussions here, I¡¯ve gained awareness that all measurements are more accurate when choosing smaller Span between the stimulus say insted 6-29mhz choosing 6-8mhz (40m band) - 20-22mhz for (15m band). I¡¯ve tried to measure smaller section with similar results those being: when Recall from calibrated memory say 6-8mhz for tuning on morse portion of 7mhz band, the SWR will be say 7.030 yet the resonance displayed on thel left will be @ 6.870 Why is this happening ? Am I missing some technical or physical understanding ? J. OK4SU 73

1.2.40 firmware
2
I've tried installing DiSlord firmware version 1.2.40 on my NanoVNA-H4, but it seems to "brick it" Going back to 1.2.29 works. Ideas as to why 1.2.40 doesn't work? I've tried uploading it with the NanoVNA app and the DFU demo program. Same results with both. 73 Stan KM4HQE

Measuring R,X Resonant Frequency
33
Greetings, I've recently completed the construction of my first 'home brew' antenna (1/4 wave vertical). A radio friend of mine suggests I should look at resonance as well as SWR. SWR is fine, but I can't see anything online about an R/X chart (similar to that available on the RigExpert). Can I do this on the NanoVNA V4? Using the H4 as a Signal generator with
6
Hello I am looking to use my H4 to generate a signal on HF at -73db and -70db to do some calibrations after a firmware update on a my receiver. Some Nanovna have a tab called "Signal Generator" but the H4 does not (or I can't find one). I Can generate a signal on the frequency wanted by setting the start and stop to the same frequency and can hear the signal on the receiver but is it possible to somehow control the output precisely? It is possible to use the Power setting but they are preset and the only options are "Auto, 2mA, 4mA, 6mA,8mA" and not what I want. Thanks for any help 73 M0KCB

Hello David, The 40M leg is too long. The SWR and RL are rising with the increase in frequency. The 80M leg is too short. The SWR and RL are improving with the increase in frequency. HTH...Bob VK2ZRE

Touch screen does not respond well.
8
I'm having great difficulty navigating between drop downs on my NanoVNA-H 4 edy555 design version 0.5.0. First thing, I thought the first, 'about screen' disappeared after a short time, mine doesn't. If I tap the screen I get Display, marker, stimulus, etc. I tapped or held and got trace. format, scale, etc. Then I tapped Format and got trace 0, 1, 2, etc. that's not correct. Now tapping back only causes the grid to come and go with each tap. I did tap trace 0 and it did bring up the yellow Ch 0 in he upper left. But back just keeps cycling the grid on and off. If I tap back enough it finally goes back to Trace, Format, Scale, etc. I can not get format to show. It seems to know when the screen is tapped, but it doe not make the change as expected. Would a firmware update help this? Any thoughts? Thanks, Mikek

40M X 80M NVIS Antenna for Winter Field Day
Hey, I wired up a 118' X 68' crossed dipole antenna per the recipe here https://w8jxn.org/?p=1650. I was able to get very good transmission 5x9 to a collaborator some miles away on 3.915MHz. The 40M leg seemed more difficult. So I hooked up my Nano VNA-H to the Feed Line. I set the calibration plane at the input to the VNA. The network is 75' of RG58 to a 1:1 Unun, then the Antenna. NVA Sweep Results attached. I didn't fuss with markers, or other settings ... What do the measurements suggest? I have some opinions, but thought to listen first. My goal is to tune it up a bit for Winter Field Day... Enjoy, and thanks in advance for any thoughts you share.

Annual Fee
5
All, It's that time of year again when we need to pay the annual $220 fee to keep the group going. The payment is due the 18th and will be automatically paid by me. Once again I ask that anyone who can contribute a few dollars is encouraged to do so. Here are the guidelines: 1. Every donation is appreciated by the group. 2. I will keep a log of all donations in chronological order. Assuming that the donation total reaches the $220 amount necessary, I will let the group know that we have enough to pay the fee. 3. Any donations that are made after the $220 goal has been reached will be returned. I do not have a good way to bank or track excess funds. Excess donations usually occur because of emails crossing in time, or me just getting busy. 4. All donations should be paid to me using PayPal "Friends and Family" (I am not making any money on this, obviously). My PayPal account is the same as my email address - kc0wjn at gmail dot com. 5. All donations will be kept in my (non-interest-bearing) PayPal account until I have paid the fee, after which time I will transfer the donated funds to my bank account. 6. In the past I have tried to personally acknowledge every individual contribution. I'll try to do that again this year, but I may not be able to for various reasons. Thank you. Nano VNA 10M Dipole Sweep
21
Fresh out of box. A sweep of my DIY 10M antenna... S1 - connected to 50' Rg58 via BNC connectors to my 10M dipole. The lowest piece of which is about 12' off of the ground. I set markers a L, M and H points of the band. S2 port had nothing connected. The VNA was calibrated just prior to the sweep. An anchored via USB to my Windows tablet. Now I'm digging into how to read the Smith Chard and return / impedance info... Comments please!! Do I need to update VNA firmware or make other changes. Software on the tablet? What's next folks?

Use CW output as a BFO for SSB reception on a AM only receiver?
7
Has anyone ever tried using the CW output feature to generate a carrier for reception of SSB (LSB/USB) on a cheap shortwave receiver that can only receive AM mode signals? It seems like this should be thoretically possible by attaching a small whip to the nanoVNA and placing it in the vicinity of the receiver. But probably tricky to get the exact frequency dialed in, as well as the signal strength relative to the sideband signals. Just seems like a fun radio exercise or for an emergency need.

Possible easier menu for radio amateurs?
24
Hello. I just wanted to ask if there is any interest from the community or the developers to make the menu easy for radio amateurs, for people that are not engineers? Currently the menu is a big mess with a lot of options and sub-options and so on. So if you want to make a simple measure, you have to go in many menus to change many settings. I know this gives a lot of control, but I will be very nice to have a few buttons on the main screen, like a main menu, that take you to the most used measurements, with all of the settings already set, with bigger font and a few buttons to change some settings only to that current measurement. I also do not know if this is something that the hardware supports.

Unable to upgrade firmware to 1.2.27
6
Hi, I have been busy a few hours to try to upgrade firmware of my NanoVNA H4 to 1.2.27. Tried STMCube progammer 2.9.0, which usually is fine, with the correct 1.2.27 bin file, and get a black screen. Tried to use STMCube progammer 2.15.0 which is said to work, black screen. Tried NanoVNA app, after updating the driver to DFU, and 1.2.27 DFU file, black screen. Fortunately, I was able to get my NanoVNA H4 back in business by using STMCube progammer 2.9.0 and 1.2.14 bin file. The same day, I upgraded the firmware of my TinySA Ultra with STMCube progammer 2.9.0 without any issue. This subject has been debated, but if someone has an idea... Best regards and happy new year. Tuner Measurement
9
I am thinking to build discrete circuits for a specific non-resonant antenna to operate on HF bands without a remote tuner. I managed to snag one of the last MFJ-948F Versa Tuner II left in stock. (But, that's an indoor tuner. I want the tuning done at the base on a non-resonant antenna.) On a nice day thinking to bring the new tuner right to the base, tune it up for a few frequencies within each band. How could a NanoVNA gather values set on the tuner? Seems so possible to use a few parts and do this outdoor tuning in advance and for increased power. Smith charts are used for this matching. But, I don't know how to read discrete values from the Smith Chart on my NanoVNA. I suppose I could also open up the tuner, use meters for the measurement and build the same. Whatever, I am sure that my NanoVNA will confirm whether the tuning is correctly after an individual network is made. Please lead me down an easy path? Maybe I just need to buy a book and learn this? TDR function?

Does the nanoVNA have a TDR function? For some reason I thought it did, but I can't find it in the menu.
