NanoVNA with a cracked screen

Well, folks. I'm a Klutz. I dropped the "Load" cap on the screen from a height of about three feet. There is a crack along the edge with connector ribbon (right side as you look at the screen). It seems to have only affected the touch screen layer as it no longer works. But all else is fine and the unit can still be operated using the encoder wheel. I'm reasonably sure of the answer to this question but I'll ask it anyway. Is it possible for a klutz in the field to replace the screen, and if so, what should I search for amongst the Ebay/Aliexpress/Banggod listings? I still have a "good" VNA (thanks to whomever said to buy two) but I hate to just put this one in the trash. It still works very well, and always has.

John

Do NOT put it in the trash. If you find it a challenge to repair please contact me off list.

John,

Here is what you are looking at for replacement of the screen. You would need to remove the top cover, carefully unfold the LCD from the board (mine was not glued or secured, and unsolder the ribbon connector from the PCB. Installation would be the reverse of the process. There appear to be a number of replacements available on eBay in response to a search for "2.8 inch LCD touchscreen" in the $8 - $15 range.

Let me know if you need help or find it too daunting.

Looks like a candidate for a Large screen transplant :-)

There is a 3.2" which will work too. Not just any screen will - it has to
be the correct one, but there is a 3.2" version. The part number is given
by Hugen, in response to me having a screen that just shows white. I have
now a damaged one and a good one. My plan would be to relace the damaged
screen with a larger one, but I have not done that yet. I'm not really
competent and surface mount stuff, so that would be a challenge for me.

Can you give us a link to screen you talked about from E-Bay.

For those looking for the compatible 3.2 inch display, just do a search on eBay with the following two items in the same line: ili9341 3.2
You'll see individual panels for sale. Check the pinouts in the description and compare to the 2.8" display pinouts (check the nano's schematic for that).

So I just dropped mine and the screen only turns on, nothing is displayed. Does anyone have an actual web link for a replacement?

Kevin,
Replacing the screen is a pretty delicate de-soldering and re-soldering operation. Totally doable if you have good soldering skills. If not, you might consider putting the money for a new screens towards purchasing the new 4" screen version of the NanoVNA-H4. The LCD for the NanoVNA-H4 is not soldered to the pcb (see attachment) so if you have an "Oops, I did it again" moment, screen replacement should be easier.

Sorry about your screen and not answering your original link request.

Yeah it looks like a bit of a challenge but manageable. What do I look for When buying a new screen? All the screens I found have another board in them and the ribbon cable is not visible to confirm the right number of pins

I eventually gave up on replacing the screen on mine.

Not because I lack the skills to do it, but because I couldn't get one sent that didn't arrive smashed to bits when it arrived due to poor packing.

If/when you do order one, make it abundantly clear to the seller it must be packed properly for shipment.

The following link was posted by another user who replaced his screen:

For exact replacement, select the touchscreen, 2.8" display. A similar unit may be available on eBay or Amazon.
