Re: Trying to find an "original" nanoVNA that will work with Joe Smith's software ...

PDN means "power distribution networks", an odd term that had appeared for those low-Z nets of filtering MLCC caps in power rails, etc. ))
All this nets are characterized by very low Z at low frequency band starting from DC to a couple of MHz.

Regarding "original NanoVNA", I just have purchased one of the cheap clones from AliExpress, that are still available.
Then just flashed it with the recommended FW version from Joe's git repo.

Re: Trying to find an "original" nanoVNA that will work with Joe Smith's software ...

You may try Walmart online, they have one that is close to the original for
$20+ bucks.

specifically the "original VNA" - shown at 2:15 mins - that has both a low
lower cut-off frequency (10 kHz), a wide dynamic range, and works in a way

Having searched e.g. ebay for an "original" nanoVNA I get like hundreds of

Might one of you here know which nanoVNA Joe Smith uses and where it can
be bought (if possible it would be preferable within the EU)? Help would be
much appreciated :-)

PDN measurements? What does PDN stand for?

I'd be careful about performance down low (10kHz) - While the VNA may generate the frequencies, there is AC coupling at various places in the analog chain, and, of course, the "detection" frequency is 5kHz (that is, the receivers use an LO that is 5kHz away) so I'd be careful about mixer performance where the RF, IF, and LO are all close together. Sure, the SA612 probably works down to DC, but...

Also, bear in mind that the stimulus on the NanoVNAs is a square-ish wave, not a nice clean sine wave with low distortion and spurs.

Re: Proper way to measure length of _Window_Line_?

You needed to sweep up to a higher frequency to see your impedance null.

A method to calculate the VF of any feedline, that will work with a VNA, antenna analyze or SWR bridge.
(this sounds complicated, but only takes a minute to do if you have already measured the actual feedline length):

Leave one end of the feed line open (or shorted -not terminated with the characteristic impedance).
Sweep over a wide frequency range, starting with a bit lower than MHz=150/(feedline length in meters),
and stopping after 2 (preferably 4) multiples of the starting frequency.

Carefully note the frequencies where you get a peak and a null.
You need to sweep a wide enough frequency range to to get at least two peaks or two nulls.
It will be apparent from the frequencies recorded, which is the fundamental, 2nd harmonic, etc.
Calculate the free-space length (meters) using 299.8/(2 x frequency x harmonic).
Your actual length / (calculated free-space length) is the exact velocity factor.

VF can vary 1 percent between batches of the same type coax, less so for parallel line.
I used this technique to get the exact VF of a 500 foot length of LMR400,
and knowing this was later able to locate a center conductor break with 1/8 inch accuracy.

Try to access the device using the serial terminal.
Plug the device, find the serial port (type dmesg in the terminal, you will
see a message at the end of the output)
and use that in a serial terminal software (cutecom for example) and see if
it works.

Try to access the device using the serial terminal.
Plug the device, find the serial port (type dmesg in the terminal, you will
see a message at the end of the output)
and use that in a serial terminal software (cutecom for example) and see if
it works.

I'm sorry, I do not understand what you are trying to say.
You expect for NanoVNASaver to start on its own when you
plug in the NanoVNA?

Try to access the device using the serial terminal.
Plug the device, find the serial port (type dmesg in the terminal, you will
see a message at the end of the output)
and use that in a serial terminal software (cutecom for example) and see if
it works.

Alan, I wish to test a handful of collins 455 filters here. They are 2.1 wide. I see in your picture you are using some capacitors but cannot see the hookup. Could you please help me with the hookup from filter to the vna? What caps do I need? are the caps coupling caps? It looks like one runs to ground? Thank you. Clark

Re: Proper way to measure length of _Window_Line_?

Hi Kevin,

The real clue was in the Smith Chart plot you posted. I am really surprised that the Smith Chart gurus out there did not pick up on this straight away.
My expertise with Smith Charts is very basic, but here goes.

The plot shows the trace entirely within the upper Inductive hemisphere of the chart. An open circuit line longer than a quarter wave and shorter than a half wave will always look inductive.
Because your sweep started above the quarter wave frequency, the line was always longer than a quarter wavelength.

So your sweep frequency was never below the electrical quarter wavelength. As it did not cross the R centre line, the sweep never made it to a half wavelength either.

Referring back to Arie's post you quoted, virtually all cables will have a VF somewhere between 0.5 and 1.0. So the next time you want to do a sweep of a quarter wave stub using an unknown cable, start the sweep at half the stub frequency and finish 20-30% higher to ensure you have all bases covered.
In your case, had you started your sweep at 7MHz and finished at 17MHz, you would have seen your stub zero response. You could have then tightened the sweep up to get better resolution.

This thread has been an interesting ride, so thanks for posting your question. Good luck with the J.

I think it was because the OP said >> "How can I get it? I'm using c# and rs232 communication."<< Most of us read that as he wanted to do serial communication between the NanoVNA and the computer.

Re: Proper way to measure length of _Window_Line_?

Bob, thanks so much for your very helpful response.

I apologize to everyone in the group that's participated in this discussion that I haven't responded much or quickly. I didn't realize that what I thought was an easy beginner's questions would be so involved. 'Life' has slowed down my responses (i.e, just spent the last two hours cleaning my printer so that I could file my state taxes).

If anyone's curious, my original task was to use the classic directions published in QST in Feb 2003 and Mar 2007 to build a folding J-Pole antenna. The first subroutine pushed on the stack was that I, also, was unable to buy 300 TV
twin-lead wire. Second item on the stack was to purchase the 300 ohm window wire, along with some similar 450 ohm window wire. Next item was to understand the original directions well enough to translate them to new dimensions for the wire I was able to obtain. Next item: the directions required that I know the velocity factor for the wire I have. That brought me to my original question to the group. What's the saying about "It's hard to remember you originally wanted to drain the swamp when you're up to your ass in alligators?"

I was able to make a measurement of the impedance of the 300 ohm window wire with the NanoVNA disconnected from my computer, and it made a tremendous difference. However, all I got was a Smith chart, with a very small pattern, I have to learn how to configure the NanoVNA, stand-alone without the computer, to display the VSWR versus frequency chart, to determine where my minimum is.

Thanks, again, to all who have taken the time and effort to respond. I'll be back with my results and status as soon as I get time.
