Good point!
But it"s a connection through 50 (or 100?) ohms in the bridge. One of the reported advantages of that circuit was that the radio wouldn't see an SWR greater than 2 while tuning.
"Not connected" was wrong, though - should have said "not DIRECTLY connected". Oops - sorry! I was thinking in terms of the zero resistance reading he got.
