CSRA Ham Technician Prep Course Jan 4-5 2025 2
A 1.5-day HAM Technician class will be held on Saturday Jan 4 from 8am-5pm and finish up on Sunday Jan 5 from 12noon-3pm. Pizza will be provided on Saturday. The classes will be held in a residence in Graniteville, SC. About 4 miles west of Aiken SC. We have had a 100% pass rate in the past. A limited number of spaces are available. There is NO charge for the classes, or pizza. Please call or send an email that you are coming, and a contact number or email address. Phone 803-292-9559 or email kq4kkham@... or dave@... If we have a good turnout, it might be possible to have a VE team test on Sunday afternoon. During this Christmas break time, would be a great time to study to become a licensed HAM. Final prep for the test will be on Saturday and Sunday, January 4 and 5. Then on Thursday, JAN 9 ,2025 you will be well prepared to take the test at 7 PM, Aiken SDA Church, 1714 Columbia Hwy N. 29801. It¡¯s on the corner of US-1 and Gun Range Rd on the north side of town. Another way to study is on the internet. There are a couple of sites you could use. HAMEXAM.ORG http://hamexam.org/ is a good one. You want to study Element 2: Technician You can use the Flash Cards to study, then practice taking Practice Exams. You can keep taking the exams. Each time you try, the exam recycles and uses mostly different questions. The Practice Exam questions are the SAME ones on the real exam. Each exam is 35 questions, multiple choice. You must get 26 correct to pass the test. Keep taking the practice exam till you can get 80-85% correct on EVERY exam. The better you do on the practice exam, the better you will do on the real one. Attending the class will give you the greatest chance to pass the FCC exam. A great printed study guide is Gordon West Technician Class 2022-2026 Element 2 Radio Technician Class Study Guide. They are about $29 on Amazon or HRO, but not required to attend the class. Any questions send an email to kq4kkham@... HAPPY LEARNING Kent KQ4KK .

Briefs, Links The ARRL National Traffic System is an integral part of the League¡¯s public service program and has seen a resurgence in activity over the past couple of years. Much of the progress has been the result of the work of a panel of senior experts comprising a select committee that is overseeing and promoting an overhaul of the network. Subscribe to The NTS Letter, published monthly, free of charge to ARRL members. The editor is Eastern Massachusetts, Western Massachusetts, and Rhode Island Section Traffic Manager Marcia Forde, KW1U. Hurricane Helene: South Carolina ARES Responds South Carolina ARES was officially activated to support emergency communications in response to Hurricane Helene, which impacted the upstate regions. ARES volunteers worked closely with local emergency management agencies and SKYWARN networks to provide critical communication services. With Hurricane Helene threatening to bring heavy rainfall, high winds, and potential flooding, ARES members were placed on high alert, relaying important weather updates and damage reports to the National Weather Service (NWS) and other emergency response agencies. Their efforts ensured that real-time information was available to guide response and recovery efforts, enhancing public safety. As part of this activation, amateur radio operators were encouraged to monitor local nets for updates and to stand by for further instructions. All volunteers were urged to be prepared for extended activation periods and to ensure the readiness of their equipment. The activation highlighted the vital role that ARES volunteers play in disaster response and recovery during major weather events like Hurricane Helene. ARRL South Carolina Assistant Section Manager and SKYWARN Program Manager Billy L. Irwin, K9OH, said ¡°Many of our dedicated volunteers worked tirelessly, providing critical support ranging from radio operations at county EOCs to offering health and welfare communications for families, friends, and neighbors,¡± adding, ¡°this storm tested us in ways many of us have never experienced before.¡± Irwin thanked his team members. ¡°I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to each of you for continuing to serve your communities in any capacity you can.¡± The South Carolina Healthcare Emergency Amateur Radio Team (SCHEART) facilitated county-to-state communications and monitored reports from affected areas. The SCHEART system is comprised of networks of linked amateur radio repeaters strategically located throughout the state. These repeaters provide an auxiliary communication path for amateur radio operators to support hospitals, county emergency management officials and state agencies during emergencies. Trained operators assist agencies in moving essential messages when commercial communications systems fail, or state systems become degraded. ARES members were encouraged to track and report on the following: Gas station status: are stations open, do they have fuel, and can they process debit/credit card transactions? Power restoration: are critical infrastructure facilities (e.g., hospitals, emergency services) restored? Status of traffic control on major highways was tasked. Road closures: the task was to report major highways, bridges, and other key routes that are closed. Welfare checks: ARES members were tasked with contacting net control stations

School Club Roundup N4SMS Monday Oct 21
We had 4 students show up on their free day and made 182 contacts. One of them showed up on YouTube Schofield Middle School Radio Club on 20 meter band The storm did some damage to the HF OCF antenna. We got most of it fixed on Friday. But the wire was pushed behind a brick chimney and was rubbing the wire. Jim Harris made a contact and the Aiken Fire Department, Ladder ONE showed up in quick time and set the antenna in its correct position. The fire crew consisted of two HAMs. Good Day. Kent KQ4KK
