29er hints and tips
5
Just thought I'd try and draw together all the various things that I've either been asked about or folk need to think about. Safety Whistle All the sailors must have a SOLAS whistle attached to their buoyancy aid with a piece of string. It's in the class rules and so you need it to race in any class events. You should have it anyway just for general sailing. Amazon seems to be sold out but there's some on Ebay for ?2.99 with free P&P Knife. Again there should either be one on the boat somewhere. Either taped to the forward thwart or rear transom. Both sailors need to know where it is!!! If the sailor that knows is under the water and the boat's turtle it's not ideal! Personally I think each sailor having a webbing cutter in their buoyancy aid secured with a piece of string is much better. Can't drop it and they've got it to hand. They also can't stab themselves with it https://www.ukairsports.com/product/aerojack-safety-knife-hook-knife-webbing-cutter/ If there are no pockets in their buoyancy aid, Rooster do a compression bib with a safety knife pocket. https://www.roostersailing.com/pd/Pro-Compression-Bib-with-Safety-Knife-Combo_106838.htm Masthead float. Definitely required. Suzie used a 6L crewsaver pencil one. Boat can turtle with it very occasionally but it works OK. Old oppy buoyancy bags are bulkier but work as well. If they're using a masthead float you're dramatically reducing chances of inversion/entrapment. They'll also not get nearly so tired sailing. Trapeze harness. I'll do a separate email with some thoughts so folk can chip in. Videos. There's a few footwork training videos on vimeo done by the old Scottish coach Matt Thomas. https://vimeo.com/29ercoach There's also a whole series of how-to videos from the class association on instagram. Search for #howtosaila29er Repairs Richard at Cygnus sails is very knowledgeable. If sending a main to him get him to pick up. His sail carriage is much cheaper than I could get. His clear monofilm repair tape is the best that there is. Go over the sails regularly and tape up any cuts in the sail. The black dacron tape also works well but is more obvious. Folk just buy it on ebay etc. Orri and Stuart swear by Gorilla Tape but they are sponsored by them!! According to Andy it also requires an iron. https://www.cygnus-sails.com/item-Monofilm_Repair_Tape.html Cygnus also does mast bags, toe straps etc all at good prices. Sail Doctor at Port Edgar doesn't have the right material for major repairs - and can be expensive. Saturn Sails at Largs have been OK for us. You can leave sail in a locker at marina on a Sunday night and pick up from there as well and that can safe a couple of round trips Training jibs Cygus also do the white dacron training jibs. They're the best investment you'll make. Only slight problem is visibility. Black laminate ones have bigger windows but they are probably not as bullet proof as the dacron ones. Matt Ratsey does the black ones but he's currently out of stock, he'd a second hand one a couple of weeks ago. Lighting boards. They're best fixed on a board across the back of the boat. The mast bouncing up and down on the gudgeon plate bends it over time. Mast tip, which is lighter, to the back of the boat. Sailingfast supplies the full range of 29er kit from Ovington and it's good to support the local guys. Duncan can splice up bespoke single piece tapered main/jib sheet etc as well and he's got a huge knowledge of the boats. Anyone else got any handy tips? Bear

RYAS Performance Team selection policy
Matt's hoping to run a Performance Team this year and RYAS are presently thinking of having the youths as the selector event. I think he was under the impression that all Scottish schools were off that week but it's just Edinburgh I reckon? I can't see that even the sailors are going to be keen to miss much school this year, especially the ones who have prelims in December. I'd assume that everyone is going to want to get good marks in prelims just in case next year's exams are still affected by coronavirus. I think it's probably going to be discussed at at HPC meeting tomorrow night so if your kids are hoping to be in the running for PT and you've strong views it might be an idea to drop him a tactful email before then. It does seem incredibly unfair if some kids can't qualify because they want to do well at school!! B.

Trapeze harnesses
Basic choices are to go for nappy harness or adjustable. Nappy harnesses are much less likely to snag on anything and are closer fitting but only normally fit the owner so not so ideally for lots of swapping about. Adjustable ones have either velcro straps, webbing straps with buckles or rope ties. All bar the velcro ones are very hard to get out of in the event of an entrapment so you need to carry a knife. Zihk do a T3 harness which does have a couple of yellow tabs to pull to quick release. I reckon the Neil Pryde probably undoes just as quickly with a couple of pulls of the velcro side straps. Tom Irvine's got one and really likes it. You can get a class discount on NP gear btw. The Banks rope tied one used to be popular with the girls, it can be adjusted better to fit the curve in their back. Boys don't like the Banks at all!! But Anna's said she actually didn't like hers and Suzie also gone off her Banks harness. Lots of kids down south sail with Shok nappy harnesses and love them. Ditto the older T2 Zhik harness. The boys definitely like this one. Just partly because it says Zihk on it. Decathlon do two versions of trapeze harnesses at considerably more wallet friendly prices. Mark Webster just bought so folk can see what it looks like this coming weekend. There are a few harnesses produced with quick release QR hooks. The kids don't like them at all. They're OK for sailing school situations but they've got too many cons for using all the time. Allen does a keyball version but I don't know anyone that uses it so no idea of what it's like. I'm not sure I see it as being easy to do wire to wire gybes with. You also can't jump into someone else's boat with that harness. https://www.yachtsandyachting.co.uk/sailing-techniques/how-to-choose-a-trapeze-harness/ Any current recommendations from the sailors? Lonely hearts club. Partners required
4
There are still a few sailors out there keen to join the 29er fleet this autumn. I know there were a few kids that couldn't make this Saturday past and so some folk won't know of them. Can I suggest that if anyone's keen to join in and looking for someone to pair up with their parents reply to this email. Name, main club sailed at, how much you'd like to do. Maybe age if you think it's important. Suzie reckons age doesn't matter in the youth classes I reckon we've got 5 transition boats already with another 3-4 potentially looking for partners so it's a great year to be joining the class. I'll post info re the transition training weekend early next week. It's not the usual two week in advance, theoretically it closes on Friday 28th. Bear

Transition weekend 29/30th August - Royal Tay YC Dundee
2
Hi all, Entry now open for the first RYAS transition weekend for any transitioning boats, either both sailors or just one can be transitioning to qualify. It's FOC. Woop woop. There's two coaches and there's a definite upper limit of 6 boats. First come first served. It's probably still worth putting your name down after six to go on waiting list but unless drop outs don't expect to get a spot. https://www.rya.org.uk/racing-events/scotland-invitational-training/Pages/enter-event.aspx?eventid=98 Entry list:- https://www.rya.org.uk/racing-events/scotland-invitational-training/Pages/event-entries.aspx They're having major hassles with RYA entry system down south so entries aren't showing up just now so don't worry if yours doesn't appear. Taster sessions - 15th August
3
Hi all, Sorry we'd a few things to sort out hence delay. We've 10 sailors currently indicated that they want to give it ago this Saturday. Have split it roughly into 3 groups with staggered start times to minimise groups hanging around on the shore. We've leave the end times more open. The chances are it will be light in the morning and then a building sea breeze PM and so ideally we'd get them out to get the hang of it in the morning and then for a blast in the afternoon. First group. 9:30 Changed ready to go for 9:30 so maybe get there for just after 9 if you want to find out how to rig one. Lyall, Drew, Morven, Roo Second group 10:45 Max, Emma, Sarah. Third group 12:00 Ollie, Robbie and Dan At the moment we've got 4 pros to take the novices out and 3 boats so that should let the pros have a break. You can use the toilets at the beach club but not changing rooms or clubhouse. Broughty Ferry is a 5 minute walk for parents with lots of coffee shops etc. I'll do a further email tomorrow with all the Covid procedures and requesting track and trace info etc but aware folk want to know what the plan is. If anyone's already got a harness please bring it, it makes it much faster to swap crews over Cheers Bear

29er tasters sails - Saturday 15th August - RTYC
9
Hi there, We've just got the go ahead to use ribs for running open 29er sessions at the Tay for the youth sailors. Looking at running a taster day this coming Saturday for anyone that's wanting to have a go. We should have a couple of 29ers on the water with an experienced sailor in each boat who can helm or crew. I'll need to get the class boat sorted, insured etc so just before I do I'd like to know if anyone's interested and can make it given the short notice? Might still be struggling with insurance for the class boat so it might all yet founder. Aiming to start reasonably early in the day and carry on for as long as needed to give sailors a proper sail in the boat. If interested let me know. We'd give first shout to those that haven't yet sailed one and are thinking about it for this autumn. Great to see so many 29ers out in lots of places this weekend btw!!! Derwent 29ering weekend
14
Dave Coady and Dave Shilling at Derwent have offered to organise an informal 29er long weekend from the 6th to 9th August. They've got 4 local boats taking part and would love to see some other 29ers coming along. It's a great chance for any new boats to get lots of time on the water at a safe beginners location. The plan is that various parents will take turns at manning ribs and doing informal coaching. The couple of local coaches are away unfortunately. The more experienced boats just need to get lots of time on the water and should all have had enough coaching to let them self coach as a group. Ideally over the weekend some of the experienced sailors would jump in a 29er with the rookies and give them a bit of one to one time to get them up the learning curve a lot faster. You can do any days out of the Thursday to Sunday. Camping available from Thursday night. Toilets are open but not changing rooms. There's a gas BBQ outside that can be used. Need to use own cooking facilities apart from that. There will be a charge for the rib hire and probably some camping fee for the club but it shouldn't be expensive. If interested please ping back a reply by say Sunday night so they can get a plan together. Bear

Provisional dates for 1st transition weekend and the combined youth academy
2
Hi all, First RYAS transition weekend is looking like 29/30th August at RTYC. Aimed at the new transition boats but I assume that will include boats with a new helm or crew as well if they fancy it. Assume RYAS will confirm soon but just so you can pencil it in. Also RYAS is looking to run a combined youth class academy on the 19/20th of September. Venue TBC but this is in place of youth classes at the zones the following weekend. It will probably be an academy for all levels with some short sprint racing tagged on but that's tbc. Bear

Summer 2020 update
6
Hi all, Firstly big welcome to the newcomers we've got this year that have already bought boats. We should be getting into double figures for events which is great!! Spoke to RYAS and they're confirming that kids from the same club can now sail a 29er together. What RYAS or the 29er class can't organise is an event where sailors from different clubs come together. Matt reckons that might change when we get to stage 4 but that certainly won't be before the end of the month. They said under current rules it's got to be under the control of the club itself and approved by the club's Covid officer. The interesting point was that Matt reckoned guidance did allow for rescuing 29ers by putting 29er wings on the sponsons, I thought problem was only mast head help and only towing on a long line which will never work with a 29er. But there's some clauses that allow for more direct help. So of anyone's struggling at their club with protocols let me know or speak to RYAS. Hopefully come August we'll get some class training organised for the transition boats, RYAS also keen to set up academies as soon as they get the go ahead. Cheers Bear PS Still need a volunteer to come on the class committee with me.

National committee rep required
Hi all, We could do with another Northern parent coming on 29er class committee with me after the summer because David Ibbotson is finishing up. It's made a huge difference having two folk from the north on the national committee and we're in a very different place to where we were 2-3 years ago, the class down south is very supportive and both they and the RYA are keen to help regional 29ering as much as possible. We're also going to have the nationals at Largs in the summer of 2021 and it would be better if we could have a "local" person/team helping to make it a success. There's a few positions becoming vacant, if you want any further info speak to myself or David, we really need someone because without regional reps on the committee it will end up being a south coast class again. The meetings have all been via Zoom recently, hopefully that will continue, I've never made one in person in the last two years anyway. The good news is that we've potentially got 5 new boast joinng the fleet up here, 2 boats already purchased with more in the offing. Cheers Bear David Sturrock Angus Heathers Ltd. Elyc rib crews
4
It's looking quite fresh this weekend and so Gillies is asking if any parents are willing to potentially crew in ribs if required depending on conditions and the club. Don't need PB2. Waterproofs or wetsuit would be good though. If you can ping back a quick reply just so he knows who to ask tomorrow if he needs folk. Bear

Catering this weekend
3
Hi all. Andreas is at ELYC on Saturday from about 10am on Saturday and he's doing his normal delicious food. Highly recommended! Cheaper than the lobster shack as well. Sunday we're on our own food wise. Not sure if any access to kitchen facilities. I don't think there will be. Saturday night for anyone in town plan is to go out for a curry. It's Ben's 18th and my 21st. Bear

Feb and March dates for the diary
7
Just a quick round up of potential sailing dates at the Tay for anyone that wants to join in. I know a few clubs are pretty closed down just now so it's gives options for both extra winter training and a chance for newbies to give it a go as well. Will do emails for each individual weekend closer to the time but if the racers can pencil in 14/15th March just now that would be great - but it's just at discussion stage!! I'm hoping that I'll finally get Foster's boat insured and down at Tay very shortly for folk to try out 29ering in. We've quite a few sailors keen to try it out but I reckon for next couple of months they'd need an experienced sailor with them because of the cold. So if any of regular's normal helm or crew can't make dates but they can come along and take out sailors for taster sessions let me know. Suzie can do some but suspect she'll be keen to windsurf some of those weekends instead. One transition boat just purchased and a few more definite possibilities in pipeline so we'll organise some transition training weekends to get folk started over the spring and summer. 1/2nd Feb. Tides good, LW around midday, although it's neaps I'd still reckon a late morning launch, always good news for a teenager! Colin's taking the rib out, he can do either or both days but think he is going to take a look at the forecast on Thursday and make a plan. 15/16th and 22/23rd Academy at Largs and IT at HSC 22/23rd Feb. Aiming to both days at the Tay with normal pairs, some toppers might be free that weekend so if spare helms/crews would aim to get them out with any new folk. Oppy academy. 29th Feb/1st March. Tides good both days. Alex is away so Suzie could take folk out but it's a topper academy weekend. 7/8th March Academy ELYC 14/15th March Discussing doing a sprint series at Tay, either one day or two? 8-10 minute races, as many as we can get in with lunch break. 6-8 races per session. Windward/leeward straight off beach so good spectator sport!!! Thinking of setting myself up with bookies blackboard. Good kick start to the season and should be fast and furious. TBC, it will be a DIY event. 21/22nd March Can do both days at Tay, Suzie free so can take out newcomers. . 28/29th GP at WPNSA. Tides good at Tay both days, Suzie can take out newcomers. Topper academy. Also Tummel Week 26-31st July this year, make sure the date is in your diary. Same format as last year. Cheers Bear

29er Summer camp 10-13th July
2
RYAS are going to be running a residential 29er summer camp at Cumbrae from 10-13th July. It's aimed at boats that are heading to the nationals and/or worlds in Weymouth this summer. Friday morning to Monday afternoon format with Gillies coaching. Think they'd better get their fitness up before they go!! The four day format is pretty intense but it should pay dividends come the nationals. Fiona will email out details confirming it all in the next week or so. It replaces the usual couple of days prior to the nationals at Weymouth, we all reckoned this was much more productive. B.

Sprints RTYC 14/15th March - any takers?
5
Just wanted to see if there was going to be enough interest before sorting any arrangements with club. Can anyone that reckons they'd be up for it please reply. Or if defo not interested or able to make it that would be handy to know as well. It would be a DIY event so parents manning rib etc. Plan would be roughly 2 hour+ sessions before and after lunch break, 10 minute target time for races so 6-8 races per session - weather permitting. Windward/leeward just off beach so great spectating. Someone can run a bookie's blackboard. Sprints work pretty well for any newbies as well, there's a fresh start every 15 minutes so you don't get too far behind. Can make a one or two day event. Or self training one day/racing the other? Could potentially decide based on weather forecast on the Thursday night? If it goes according to plan we'd get at least 12 races in a day. So 24 over two days. Is that too many, it depends heavily on weather playing ball though. It's good starting practice, mark rounding, decision making etc and should be fast and furious, the beach could well be one of the boundary lines. Colin and Danny did a RS200 sprints last autumn with an 8 minute target time and said it was great, lots of place swapping within the 8 minutes, I suspect the 29ers might need an extra couple of minutes? Anyway any interest or thoughts? Bear

1/2nd Feb at RTYC
4
Colin's going to sort out this weekend. If anyone's likely to be interested then please reply so he knows numbers. Suzie concussed so very doubtful given breeze forecast. It's not open sailing I'm afraid - unless any regular looking for a crew for a day. Think he's planning looking at forecast of Thursday and deciding on a plan. Bear

25/26th January - RTYC
5
Think all three Tay boats going out for a full day on the water on the 25th January. Might have a couple of boats on the Sunday as well if anyone else wants to come along and get on water post prelims. Tides are good and there's student fleet racing on as well as some laser training so beach catering running and good spectator sport. Let me know if thinking about coming along. Suzie looking for helm for Sunday, Alex is away. B.
