My mini lathe 4
Here's what I have. I used to have a Grizzly 7x14 but sold that when we moved. Of course I bought a bigger lathe for the new house and made sure the workshop is heated. I hated working in freezing weather in the old house. The picture is right after we got it, but then we were away quite a bit due to unforeseen political events. We're now back and don't plan any long trips so we're busy finishing the house and the lathe is finally getting used again. We also got a new mill to replace our old one also left behind. We need to finish installing this, but it's working fine as is.

Here's the bench my wife and I built for our lathe. Simple steel tube and angle with sheet metal topped OSB. The lower shelves will just be OSB but we didn't get a chance to make them before our unexpected travel. I also want to put a bit of cross bracing on this, it sways a bit when cranking the slide a lot. Construction hint: There are angle supports under the table where the lathe is bolted down, so the wooden top is not holding up anything other than tools. The legs have nuts welded in and adjustable feet. In the picture the feet and sheet metal haven't been added yet, you can see the metal in the background. On 31-Jan-25 0:55, davesmith1800 wrote:

Yeah, I had a 1963 Cherokee 180 for several years. I've built two hangars and made the 40' bi-fold doors from scratch. Are you the Smith doors I see on display at Oshkosh? Stuart On 1/30/25 21:01, davesmith1800 wrote:

Grizzly 7x14 owner 22
I have a Grizzly 7x14 that I fitted with a ER-32 collet chuck. It was improved with a steel gearset and I "fixed" a ton of things that were machined wrong on it to make it more suitable. An OXA quick change toolpost was a must have for me and I outfitted it with narrow nosed live center. The end thrust setup on the leadscrew was janky, so I machined a nicer setup for it. I was very disappointed with the drive motor mount, so I made a radiused and counterbored flat plate to mount it. I cleaned the casting pimples off the mounting area and made thicker stepped washers in order to give it better support. In the end, I had to modify the splash pan a little to compensate for the added dimension of the plate, but the end result was what I was after.

Hoist 2
Here's the installation of our hoist. Just a little one, took almost it's full rating to lift the milling machine with the motors removed. In this one you can see the motor that eventually wound up on the band saw. We put this up in a temporary location to haul some heavy stuff inside. self lifting My wife and I built a frame for it Back up to the rafters Put on wheels (flanged bearings). I used extra long bolts so if a bearing fails the bolt will catch on the I-beam. And it's done I need to add a pulleys at the ends of the I-beam to make a rope pull system for this. But, it rolls ok even with 400kg on it!
