Machining Square bare using steady rest.

This in my old South Bend lathe I downsize to mini Lathe for retirement?
 

We always called that a cat's head.
?
I worked at an outfit where we made vacuum chambers made out of welded seam 304 stainless steel tubing that was never round enough to use a steady rest on it.
The cat's head gave us a round surface to allow for steady rest support when machining the end faces of the tubes.
 

I have made cats head think good project
