Re: Use gym equipment with Apple Watch - Apple Support

Thanks John,

The article really didn’t address my question but it said the equipment may keep your workout data. I’ll just keep doing what I do without connecting to the equipment

Apple Watch and treadmill

This morning I went to the Y. They have new treadmills that can be connected to one’s apple watch via bluetooth. I didn’t do so because I don’t know if there is any danger in doing so - i.e. is there a possibility of getting hacked by connecting through bluetooth.

TIA

Re: Reassurance on best path

To end this journey that took as long as the Mayflower, I tried doing just as all the various helpful messages directed, but nothing worked, even trying to make the Thumb Drive bootable. ?

I decided to go to Apple and get this done, as they started the erasure I told the lady it was a 10 TB drive, she said just a minute…then when she came back I also told her FileVault had been turned on….she said wait just a minute.

She cancelled the image she had chosen and went to a “Split Install”, which was complete within just a few minutes.

I’m sure she was told to only wipe out the boot sector (or whatever it’s called) since the remainder of the drive was protected with FileVault….thank you Lee.

So it’s finally over, but I did learn something that I imagine all on this list knew. ?When she was hooking up an Apple Wireless keyboard and the Wireless Trackpad she plugged them into a USB slot, for gracious sakes I didn’t know you could do that, I thought the plugs on the devices was for charging…

Have a great Sunday folks.

I spent some time thinking about this and I think your safest bet is to now overwrite the current installation of MacOS on the system volume. The problem you run into with a normal installation is that the usual install methods will want to maintain the status quo. So, Internet recovery is probably the easiest way to get around this.

You can do an Internet recovery without supplying a password, so all the personal information is lost and your data will remain encrypted—just pure random garbage without a recovery key.

To do this

(1) Bong the Mac.

(2) Hold down ?-R until you see the ?. This will get you into recovery mode.

(3) Don’t type a password on the login screen. Choose the recovery assistant (top left???).

(4) Choose the erase option and erase the current MacOS.

(5) Rebong the Mac and go into recovery mode again.

(6) Do a net install of the default MacOS.

There are slicker ways of doing this with the command line, but this seems to be the most straightforward and it will leave behind nothing recognizable.

Apple has what looks like a pretty easy way to nuke the OS and credentials?. I looked for such a page yesterday, but somehow didn’t stumble over it.

If you have used FileVault and have nuked your credentials by installing a new MacOS, as instructed on Apple’s Web page, you needn’t worry about erasing the drive.

Lee,

I’m getting so tired of all this, I’m sure you are also.

When I followed your instructions there was no wording, no recovery assistant anywhere. ?I had to go get a wired keyboard and mouse as the wireless would not connect fast enough to boot with the ?-R, once done I would boot correctly but there was no option do as the rest of your instructions. ?I am running Sierra as I’ve needed to keep my machines on a 32 bit system do to one program. ?

While going through all the items on the drive I did find?

I was going to install this on a thumb drive and try to boot from that devise which would allow me to then wipe the main drive clean, but when I tried to copy the Sierra app to the drive I get this:

The App is just shy of 5 gig, I’m using a 128 gig drive..

I guess if this doesn’t work I’ll have to take it to Apple and have them wipe it and install but they only do a one pass wipe and the type folks that might purchase this box may well have the expertise to retrieve info. with just one pass.

I’m so sorry to keep bothering you, nothing about this transition has been easy.

Thanks so much.

John

There’s usually an option in the setup for your router that lets you choose the channels it will use. I don’t know where this is on your ATT router.

The problem with choosing the best channel, especially at 2.4 GHz, is there are many types of devices using those frequencies—not just computers. So, doing a network scan doesn’t give you a real picture of the congestion. For example, I have a wireless outdoor temperature/humidity monitor that’s connected to a receiver in the house. It’s using some frequency in the 2.4 GHz band, but I have no idea which one. Baby monitors, intercoms, intrusion alarms, etc. are other devices that might be using the 2.4 GHz band, but they won’t show up when you check for WiFi usage.

This is exacerbated by the fact that adjacent 2.4 GHz channels can partially overlap each other. This means if you’re on channel 1 and someone else nearby is on channel 2, your signals can interfere with each other.

Without special equipment you can’t really tell which channels are the least congested. Trial and error is maybe the best approach. On 2,4 GHz, I’d start trying with channels 1 and 11 because they’d only have possible overlaps on one side.

Channels range from 1-157 - are there really that many channels. That seems like a lot.

There are a lot of channels available in 5 GHz. The numbering goes from 36 to 165. They’re divided into groups (bands) intended for different users. The band for home use is called UNII-1 and contains channels 36, 40, 44, 48.

On my Synology router, I’m using channels 4 and 36 on 2.4 and 5 GHz, respectively. These work well, but I don’t have many close neighbors.

Re: Ventura Wifi woes

Hi Lee,

Thanks for this bit of info. I have an ATT router with an Orbi77 wifi extender. NetSpot shows Orbi77 on channel 7 - 2.4 ghz. There are other folks nearby also on Channel 7. My Att router is on Channel 11 - 2.4 ghz and channel 44 - 5 Ghz.. Orbi77 also shows uo on Channel 44 - 5 ghz.

There are other on channel 7 and channel 44. Is there away to change the channels used. There are are multiple channels being used near my house in Old Louisville (lots of apartments nearby as well as single family homes). If I’m losing my wifi as Bill indicated is there anything to do about it given there are multiple people on the same channel.
