Just my two cents...
Welcome to Linux! To start, maybe for reliability and finding
your feet, go with? the Mint distro.
Easy to use, well maintained, and very functional for ham radio.
Huge user base, so plenty of advice and help. Does it have the
newest bleeding edge of everything? No, but everything works, and
you can always enjoy bleeding edge (often not much different)
versions of apps later when you are comfortable with the system.
Apps have dependencies, other necessary files necessary for their
function. New versions often need new versions of dependencies.
Hunting these down and installing them requires some skill and
know-how, best left for after you get your feet wet with Linux.
FWIW, what do I use? Mostly Arch, though also Ubuntu developer,
Debian, and yes, sometimes Mint, but while not claiming to be any
expert, I've been doing this a while. Maybe this might help:

I should mention that I am doing a new build with an AMD
processor, 6-core.
