Lagoon 440 volvo penta d2-75 propeller size #'s

Hello everyone,

our Lagoon 440 hull 029 S/y Paradise just lost a propeller somewhere in the Baltic Sea.

We have Volvo Penta D2-75 engines with two blade propellers. Anyone with the same engine configuration knows the correct prop properties?

Yours,
Miikka

Re: lagoon 380 salon fan wiring question

The wires run aft but are almost impossible to pull as they are held in place by the gun like substance Lagoon uses to hold wiring looms in place during manufacture. Good luck.

Re: Electric Drives

I have had 2 Lipo banks fail on 2 different lagoons and would not recommend them.

The real issue I feel is to cruise comfortable you need to simplify systems not make them more complex.

Adding any system which requires constant monitoring such as lipos will sooner or later lead to faults -
either the sensor goes bad - or your monitoring or or or

One happened on a passage between NZ and Fiji the other failure in Port in New Caledonia -
both times we could not get LIPO's repaired or sent in as NO AIRLINE will accept them as airfreight !

This alone makes LIPO's an experimental tool at best - in 10 years - maybe - right now it's the bleeding edge IMHO and I'm not in the mood to give more blood .

And with regards to electric motoring - on a passage from Xmas Island to Hawaii with sustained 27-35 knots of winds for 11 days coming from 60 degrees we had to motor sail 80% of the 1000 nm trip - so if your engines can't run for 10 days straight - why have them in the first place ?

Check your Steering pulleys 380

Hi all,

The steering cables run from the helm down to the inside wall of the port cabin, then turn 90 degrees in the port engine compartment. The pulleys inside the rear port cabin are well engineered and not much could go wrong. But the pulleys in the engine compartment that make the 90 degree turn should be inspected. You might use your phone to get close enough to them to snap a pic to be sure the carter pins are good and the pins are in place.

the issue is the pins that hold the pulleys are kept in place by a small carter pin.? When that carter pin breaks, there is nothing to keep the pin from falling out. In my case, the pin fell out just enough to cock the pulley making the steering more difficuly, but not impossible. I believe in short time the pin would have dropped out and put way too much slack in the steering not to mention it would damage the steering cable.

This seems like a poor design to me. The pin has nothing but gravity to prevent it from wiggling up and a small carter pin to stop it from falling out or down.?

My 380 is a 2008, perhaps they made a change on newer models. The good news is in my case it took 11 years to be an issue, and the pulleys are relatively easy to check from the port engine compartment.?

The photo i am attaching shows the near pulley with the pin dropping out (not visible) or down as the carter pin had broken, and the far pulley pin (silver dowel) defying gravity and working its way up.? There is not even a washer or room for a washer between the carter pin and the pulley housing.?

Hope this helps.? This topic came up in the lagoon yahoo forum years ago, but i missunderstood what carter pin to check and was checking the large one on the rudder.?

Hope this helps someone

Thank you Kevin! I've got 9000 hours on my 3GM30 diesels and SD20 saildrives. I can replace them with 3YM30 diesels and SD25 saildrives for about $30K plus installation. My alternative is Bellmarine electric saildrives with two 10KW lead crystal battery banks and two diesel generators. This would give me the redundancy that I now have but also the battery bank size to run air conditioning and heat and a watermaker without the gensets kicking on during the night. It would also produce about 1000 watts an hour of regenerated energy under sail at 7 knots to top the batteries up. There's a Leopard 38 I know of that cruises full time on about one quarter of the fuel they used when diesel powered. The Lagoon 42 electric was ahead of its time and I'm told was not well designed. The big improvement is in batteries, either lithium or lead crystal which have no liquid to sulfate up and can be drawn down to a 20% power level with no negative effects. The electric option is in the $50K range but can also run all your heat and water and refrigeration. Thanks for your feedback!!

My experience with the all electric vessel, after 2 hours of runtime, the batteries were hitting the critical point of depletion and we were only going 2 knots. I would imagine if we had a headwind, we would have been better off anchoring. Going so slow on a windless day left me helpless and hot. Wife is not a fan of all electric.?

With my diesels, we can travel at 8 knots with 2 engines and 6.5knots with one.

Electrical storage on a boat is a very complicated process. The LifePos do offer major benefits.

I had to repower my vessel after the Perkins received 8000 hours of abuse. The electric conversion costs were double the costs of new engines. ($30k versus $16k)

I have not looked at the Bellmarine electric drives and lead crystal batteries with genset.?

I understand some use the electric motors off forklifts with the Chevy volt batteries. I might be tempted to try in a small monohull before committing to main propulsion for my floating home.?

Re: Convection Microwave In Place Of Eno

Nice choice, looks great. How¡¯s the current draw, are you able to run this off the inverter? My concern would be say, baking items for 30 -45 minutes.

Did you finish the cut edges of the cabinet, I¡¯m looking for matching edge tape for a similar project.

Thanks in advance for your reply and pictures.

Aloha, Mike

Re: Convection Microwave In Place Of Eno

Microwave I used is PANASONIC NNDF385MEPG
A few different models available but the Panasonic slim line ones are the only ones I found that fit in the limited depth of the cupboard where the oven was. I think all the slim line ones start with the letters NN. I liked the idea of a door that opened from the top rather than the side. Little bit of extra space on the top but you really need that for ventilation anyway so I added a shelf than does not quite go all the way back for the selection of cutting boards. Added a lip at the back of the shelf to keep things from falling into the abyss. Have now bypassed the issue of a non inverter power source by running a cable down the back, along the starboard bilge and up into a double adapter where the washing machine plugs in.

Convection Microwave In Place Of Eno

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

I have long been planning to make this upgrade but I have not found a combo microwave that fits in place of the Eno without enlarging the cutout.? I am seriously considering the Sharp SMC 1585BS because it requires only a slight enlargement of the cutout and has an available trim kit to give it a built-in look.? Unlike the cheaper convection microwaves, the Sharp has the "Low Mix Bake" and "High Mix Roast" functions that combine convection and microwave for very fast cooking.? I have the 30 inch over-the-range version of this unit in my motorcoach and it's awesome.?

I have a 3000 watt full sine inverter backed by 1050AH house, plenty of solar, and a genset so power is not a problem.

I also installed a Splendide washer-dryer that fits and works fine over what had been a useless desk that collected junk.? I removed the desk and heavily reinforced it internally.? The unit sits right at the CG of the boat on the starboard side and helps balance the weight of the house bank on the port side.

Re: Spare AC cable under galley sink

Hi Lance, sorry I have no clue.
But I am interested to know the type/model "Combi oven" that you found will fit as replacement to the ENO?
Sounds like a great idea, and I want to do the same :)
Cheers
Niels

Spare AC cable under galley sink

While cleaning up a few other items on my Lagoon 440, I discovered a spare AC cable under the access hatch in the cupboard below the galley sink. I can only assume that this is located there in case of a dishwasher installation from the factory. As I want to change out the ENO POS gas oven to a combination microwave, convection, grill I thought perfect. The only problem is that the cable is not live. Anyone have any idea where the other end of this cable is meant to connect? I assume it would be one of the powered lines not running through the inverter if it is there either for a dishwasher or microwave.

Re: Yanmar 40 hp/SD50 seawater leak

Thanks for the great suggestions. After cleaning and placing paper towels to show water it turned out to be spurting out of the overflow tube that goes to the top of the vacuum breaker on the sea water outlet to the exhaust. So, despite my fears of haul out (which isn't available where I am in New Zealand) and a big bill it boiled down to removing two very small screws to expose the diaphragm and push it down a few times. I couldn't even see the dirt that was breaking the seal!!! Working fine now:) I did find and test the SD seal sensor, so all is well at Adele Island, New Zealand:).

Re: Yanmar 40 hp/SD50 seawater leak

It could also be the raw water hoses from seacock to strainer and to engine. I had a bearly visible cut in the hose just where the hose connects to the strainer with the clips that built overtime due to vibration. Once I stopped the engine the strainer emptied (a small amount of water only) it stopped leaking. Have a look and maybe clean the engine room and run the engine in neutral and monitor.?

It could also be in the exhaust system as the pressure pushes out the water overboard at high rpm under load.?

Re: Yanmar 40 hp/SD50 seawater leak

It's probably the sail drive rubber seal between the hull and sail drive unit?
Usually there is a double seal with an electronic sensor that would give you warning of a problem.
Best have the problem looked at with boat out the water

The water outlet from the sail drive looks dry and no apparent leaks in the hoses to and from the heat exchanger. No water collects when docked, so I think the SD membrane is OK.

Any ideas where water might be coming from the bottom of the engine so as to end up in the cavity underneath or, possibly, from the forward part of the sail drive which would drain into the cavity?

Drawers next to Freezer in Salon - How to remove

Hi all,

We have a 450. ?The thermostat for the freezer in the salon has died and a new one is on order. ?The repair guy spend a great deal of time trying to figure out how to take out the drawers that are just to the left of the freezer, (to the right of the main panel and under the TV slot). ?I am away from the boat, with a friend giving access to the repair guy. ?He was unable to figure out how to remove them so he can get to the thermostat. ?

Any input would be welcome.

Thank you,
