LET'S ALL PITCH IN AND GET THIS DONE..... We need those of you who are great at forwarding on info with your
e-mail network. Please read and pass on. Peace and good health. It would be wonderful if 2001 were the year a cure for breast cancer was found!!!!
This is one note I'll gladly pass on. The notion that we could raise $16 million by buying a book of stamps is powerful! As you may be aware, the US Postal Service recently released its new "Fund the Cure" stamp to
help fund breast cancer research. The stamp was* designed by Ethel Kessler of Bethesda, Maryland.
It is important that we take a stand against this disease that kills and maims so many of* our mothers, sisters, friends. Instead of the normal
34 cent stamp, this one costs $.40. The additional $.06 will go to breast cancer research.* A "normal" book costs $6.60. This one is only $8.00. It takes a few minutes in line at the Post Office and means so much.
If all stamps are sold, it will raise an additional $16,000,000 for this vital research. Just as important as the money is our support. What a statement it would make if* the stamp outsold the lottery this week.
What a statement it would make that we care.
I urge you to do two things TODAY: * * 1.* * * Go out and purchase some of these stamps. * * 2.* * * E-mail your friends to do the same.
Many of us know women and their families whose lives are turned
upside-down by breast* cancer. It takes so little to do so much in this drive.
Please help & pass it on!

VC Digital Academy Summer Schedule
The VC Digital Academy Presents Armed with a Camera Course and Other Digital Video Workshops This Summer
Beginning this month, Visual Communications introduces its first session of the VC Digital Academy. The Academy is prepared to transform scores of individuals into digital artists. This emerging generation of filmmakers and artists will be the ones who change the world by any means: cameras, computers and maybe even pencil, pen, and paintbrush. The VC Digital Academy Summer/Fall Schedule is as follows:
Armed with a Camera, a six-week crash course for community members with little to no experience in producing linear video projects (June 6thJuly 21st, every Saturday 9am-1pm plus orientation and editing.) The course covers story development, scriptwriting, camerawork, editing and web streaming. Each student will complete a short video project. Community members will learn to use video or film as the medium to have their voices heard and document their stories and experiences. It will help prepare them to make meaningful and professional quality documentaries. Armed with a Camera will be taught by award winning veterans Arthur Dong, Janice D. Tanaka, and Walt Louie, who have produced social justice and socially relevant work and will be sharing their experience and training with the next generation of new voices. Cost: $350 members/$380 non-members.
Webolutionary Boot Camp (June 14-Aug 9, every Thursday, 4-7 pm) No longer must artists be bound by frames, tables and static graphics. On the internet, Flash has revolutionized artistic freedom. This class will further students understanding and start them exploring the softwares potential, along with their artistic capabilities in the world wide webolution. VCs own web development director, Lyndon Versoza will be instructing this session.
Digital Arts Network (September 25 January, every Tuesday except holidays 4-7 pm) is a project under the CAL Arts Community Arts Program. The Network is now conducting community youth art classes that pay close heed to advancements in technology that are making many forms of art more accessible. Particular emphasis is placed on the web and digital video.
Additional workshops at the Academy will include:
* Directing Workshop with Henry Chan (July 14: 1-4 pm) A hands-on workshop designed to address your ability to handle pressure before and after the film starts rolling. Participants will work live with a group of actors. Cost: $80 members/$95 non-members.
* Final Cut Pro: What You Need to Know to Get Cutting (Aug. 4 & 5: 9am-1pm) This intensive course taught by Walt Louie will cover the basics of how to edit with FCP, learning keyboard shortcuts, and creating basic effects and graphics. Cost: $280 members/$325 non-members.
* The Art And Design of Motion Graphics (Sept. 8: 10 am-5 pm) taught by John DeTemple will give a comprehensive overview of the current state of motion graphics and demonstrate industry standards of graphic software including specific examples and tips on using Adobe Illustrator, PhotoShop and After effects. Cost: $175 members/$200 non-members.
* Grants and Fundraising (Sept. 22) taught by Justin Lin (and others TBA) will cover such topics as project description, treatment, developing a detailed budget, and the dos and donts in preparing a sample tape of representative work. Cost: $80 members/$95 non-members; $180 covers workshop, membership fee, and VC fiscal sponsorship.
* Taxes for the Filmmaker (Oct. 6) will present tips on how to make tax day less painful (Instructor TBA). $15 members/$20 non-members.
In addition, short one-day seminars will also be conducted: Story and Structure Are Everything (Jun 9: 9 am-1 pm) intensive seminar focused on interview-driven documentary, taught by Arthur Dong; Screenplay Systems Seminar (Jun 9: 1-4 pm) an introduction to the advantages of working with a program made specifically for screenwriters, taught by Stephen Greenfield, president of Screenplay Systems; and The Role of Editing in Film and Television (Jun 30: 10 am-5 pm), taught by Walt Louie, will explore and analyze the craft of editing, the tricks of the trade, and the difference between a "good cut" and a bad "cut".

May 29, 2001 LOS ANGELES – Visual Communications Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film & Video Festival will screen the latest film from Japanese director/actor Naoto Takenaka, "RENDAN: A QUARTET FOR TWO" at 11 AM on June 2 and June 3 at the Laemmle’s Monica 4 Plex Theatre located at 1332 Second Street, Santa Monica.
"RENDAN: A QUARTET FOR TWO" is the latest film by actor-director Naoto Takenaka. Best known internationally for his hilarious, scene stealing role in the US released SHALL WE DANCE?. Takenaka is also an award-winning director (Venice Film Festival for NOWHERE MAN in 1992). "RENDAN" is Takenaka’s fourth outing as a director. It is an intimate, character-driven piece that delivers laughs and tears in equal measures.

Paul Zaloom at Highways! Not to be missed!
OBIE and LA WEEKLY AWARD winning satirist/puppeteer Paul Zaloom (AKA Beakman on TV's cult fave Beakman's World) performs in Velvetville, a relentlessly low-tech, multi-media puppet extravaganza!
This rare event opens this Thursday at Highways in Santa Monica for only two weeks. Look at the groovy attachment! Directed by Randee Trabitz.
What’s Velvetville? MIX: - a tablespoon of Marcel Duchamp - a smidgen of George Carlin - a half cup of Salvador Dali, and - a bowl of Soupy Sales YOU GET: -cheesy black velvet paintings! -highly idiosyncratic, real-time animations! -weirdly funny juxtapositions of unlikely objects and trash!
What happens? Zaloom uses all kinds of crap to illustrate a surrealistic and wildly funny narrative including: his Vermont vacation trip, which urbanizes and destroys the state; his sudden death and subsequent wake in a funeral home; his descent into hell, run by Walt Disney; his hyperactive and cathartic nightmare about the 2005 Inaugural; and much, much more!
What’s the point? This three-ring-circus celebrates our "swell" American civilization and Zaloom’s complicity in its rank stupidity, while dazzling unsuspecting viewers with a panoply of breathtakingly cheap special effects. Sustained laughter and wild amusement will rule!

"One of the most original and talented political satirists working in the theater." Stephen Holden, New York Times.
"Paul Zaloom is a wildly creative, stupendously resourceful performance artist who turns what is essentially trash into a trenchant and hilarious puppet show." Time Out New York

Thanks to jeff Jeffords, we have once again regained control of the Senate, restoring much needed balance to the united states government, which will help to more easily block Bush's far-rightwing extremist judicial nominees. Jeff Jeffords is literally saving the nation. But Bush of course is trying to stop him.
According to the AP, "Stung by the potential defection, the White House urgently contacted longtime Jeffords' donors and political supporters Tuesday, hoping they could persuade the senator to stay in the GOP."
In response, Democrats.com has announced a "Dollars for Jeffords" campaign. Democrats.com is the largest Internet community of Democratic activists, and has 25,000 members. The campaign is featured at the top of the Democrats.com home page, which gets 5 million hits per month.
1. Send a $1 bill in an envelope to: Jeffords For Vermont Committee Inc. P.O. Box 246 Montpelier, VT 05601.
2. Call his office (202-224-5141) to tell him.
3. Sign our petition to tell the world.
****If all of us send Senator Jeffords as little as $1, we can in quantity help to make up for the loss of donors he will suffer by switching parties.
The full text of the appeal reads:
Dear Senator Jeffords,
For the good of our Nation, we urge you to switch your party affiliation from Republican to Democrat.
Americans overwhelmingly oppose the Republican agenda of giving massive tax cuts to the wealthy, while starving desperately-needed programs for education, health care, retirement, and the environment.
Despite this public opposition, Congressional Republicans have been marching in lockstep behind the extremist conservative leadership of George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Trent Lott, and Tom Delay.
You have refused to go along with this extremist agenda. As a result, you have been punished by your fellow Republicans in ways big and small.
By switching to the Democratic Party, you will find a home among friends.
You will be able to vote your conscience without fear of retribution.
And you will put a desperately-needed brake on the runaway Republican train and make it possible for Congress to chart a course that reflects the desires of the majority of Americans.
We recognize that your big donors are being told by the White House to pressure you into staying in the far-rightwing serving Republican Party.
To encourage you to join the Democratic Party - the party of the people - we are each sending you $1.
