That¡¯s a lot of DCCOs. When/where the fishing¡¯s good (schools of shad I¡¯m guessing) big groups of DCCOs and White Pelicans are pretty commonly observed in south LA in fall/winter. Re: actual numbers, I¡¯m guessing most often 75-150. During migration the same happens along points to the north. They really go for big open water bodies where they herd big schools of fish. They often hunt like that around the deep sides of spillways. Y¡¯all may want to check out the spillway at Chicot SP¡¯s North Landing if y¡¯all are still there. Cormorants at Chicot SP
My wife and I were birding this morning(Tuesday, 10/8/24) at the south fishing pier in Chicot State Park and saw a large number of DCCOs feeding. My conservative estimate was approximately 200 birds. (eBird flagged this number). Most were juveniles. Later this afternoon, we saw what I assume is the same group flying north, low to the lake, from our cabin.
I¡¯ve never seen this many DCCOs together before. Is this related to fall migration ? I have pictures which I will add to my eBird list when I get home Friday. Comments welcomed. David Whipple Metairie, LA |

Varied Thrush at Peveto, Sunday
I picked up the memory sticks today from the trail cams at Peveto Woods. I
was looking at them tonight and found a Varied Thrush recorded on two of the cameras. The mister water feature and the new water feature next to it. The only recordings were from Sunday,10/6/24, at 3:30 PM. I was only there an hour today, but did not see it. Photos attached are stills from the videos. Dave Patton Lafayette |
BRAS Program - Wed, Oct 30th @ EBR Parish Main Library
The Baton Rouge Audubon Society will host our next program on Wednesday,
October 30th at the East Baton Rouge Parish Main Library on Goodwood Blvd. PROGRAM TITLE: Secretive marshbird trends across the Deltaic Plain of Louisiana PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Secretive marshbirds (SMB) are an enigmatic group of waterbirds found within fresh to saline marshes of Louisiana and are affected by both natural and anthropogenic changes within their environment. The lack of information regarding SMB distributions complicates planning, management, and restoration of SMBs in coastal Louisiana, highlighted during the aftermath of the Deepwater Horizon Oil spill in 2010. To address this information gap, we conducted three years of callback survey within five basins around Coastal Reference Monitoring Stations (CRMS) scattered across Louisiana wetlands of five key breeding SMBs across various coastal marsh types within the deltaic plain of Louisiana. Ecological variables such as water levels, vegetation community types and remote sensing results were then used to quantify ecological trends and estimate the abundance of SMBs. Additionally, deployment of GPS tags on rails and gallinules will help better identify what factors may affect home range size and movements across seasons. The development of species distribution models from abundance across southeastern Louisiana will help biologists better identify key restoration features for marshbird management and conservation. PRESENTER: Leah Moran, PhD candidate, School of Renewable Natural Resource, Louisiana State University LOCATION: East Baton Rouge Parish Main Library on Goodwood Blvd; Room 102 (first floor) DATE: Wednesday, October 30th TIME: 7:00 - 8:00 PM (in-person social 6:30-7:00) Although we encourage everyone to attend in person, we do still offer a virtual option via Zoom. Zoom registration: Thank you, Katie Percy BRAS Programs Committee |

Important requests for LOS News
All,
My previous request for bird book suggestions for Christmas has been going well. PLEASE send them to me if you haven¡¯t yet. So far, I have received zero titles by people like Jon Donn, Steve Howell, Geoff Hill, Donald Kroodsma, Ted Floyd, or even Roger Tory Peterson for that matter. So if you have some favorites from these folks or from anyone else, please send them to me ASAP. NEW REQUEST!! I¡¯d like to start congratulating LOS members on home parish, LA, NA, etc. life list achievements. As in, ¡°Congratulations to Jay Bird for his 500th NA life bird: Yellow-billed Albatross,¡± or ¡°Congratulations to Robin Aves on her 1000th world life bird: Keel-billed Toucan!¡± To keep it simple, I¡¯ll be celebrating all of the following if you send it in to me: YOUTH birders: -100th species and up and in intervals of 50 (150, 200, 250¡) of any region. ADULT birders: - home parish species starting at 100 and increasing in intervals of 50. - LA species starting at 300 and increasing in intervals of 50. - NA species starting at 400 and increasing in intervals of 50. - world species starting at 600 and increasing in intervals of 50. PLEASE INCLUDE THE NAME OF THE SPECIES! And if you have a photo of the bird, please send it in case I have room to add photos. Thanks! John Dillon Editor, LOS News |
Venice pelagic trip 19 Oct.
LABIRD ¡ª I¡¯m trying to fill another boat trip for Sat. Oct. 19.
Pelagic trips this late are almost nonexistent so I have no idea what we¡¯ll find out there. An October trip out of Texas had a Manx Shearwater on 10 Oct. 2015, and one was found sick at Port Aransas last year on 26 Oct.. Those birds almost certainly passed through LA waters. So that¡¯s my current ¡°fantasy¡± bird. In second place is Red Phalarope, for which 3 of 4 of Louisiana¡¯s records are from October, and there is a fairly nice scattering of October records all over the eastern USA, including on a few Atlantic pelagic trips. Here are eBird Trip Lists from the two previous trips, August and September: If interested, let me know, Van Remsen =================== Dr. J. V.
