New LA-1K Owner
6
I am pleased as *punch* with my new *LA-1K* and *HF-Auto*. I hooked them up today and gave them a quick run through, made a couple of contacts, am super happy with the results! I did a lot of prior research on available HF amplifiers, both in the new and used markets, and the LA-1K came out on top. I had narrowed my choices to solid-state amplifiers. Although tube amps are considered sturdy, they have a lot of negatives as well, compared to solid-state amps. Operating the LA-1K is really dirt simple. I am sure someone out there will bemoan its simplicity, arguing for the old days, but *not* me. This amp is *exactly* what I want -an amplifier deliberately designed to be easy to operate. Many thanks to Palstar for these products. Also, thank you to Eva@palstar for making the order process easy - the units arrived in just 10 days. Gene Gajewski WG5ENE

Operating temps
24
I apologize if this subject has already been addressed (I could not find a thread). What operating LDMOS transistor temperatures are you seeing under normal operation? MY LA-1K is used at my remote station. It has performed very well. An actual-time camera allows me to watch the amp "work" - normally the amp is displaying +32C, but I do see temps elevate under normal use. I'm curious as to what others are seeing. Thanks for your input! 73 de W7GBA

Firmware Update Error
3
Attempting to update to the latest firmware today. The update procedure fails with a "memory verification error" message. The only option at that point is to close the update application. I have tried the procedure twice with the same result. The amp will no longer boot, blank screen with the red LED on solid. I'm posting this on Saturday so the factory is closed with no one answering the phone. Any ideas? Allen, W9DZ

Auto Band Selection
9
I am using the Palstar LA-1K with an Icom IC-705 plugged into a power supply. It does not automatically change bands when I transmit. Any ideas on how to make this work? Maybe the 705's RF power is not enough for auto sensing? Thanks. Michael-KE0WNL

Does it hurt anything if I drive the amp with 10 watts?

How to configure the ALC
4
I'm looking for a document showing the procedure on how to configure and adjust the ALC. I am using my LA-1K with an ICOM IC-7610. The LA-1K document says: *Press and hold the < or > arrows to increase or decrease ALC BASE VALUE. If using ALC this should be adjusted carefully to match your transceiver’s requirements* How do I adjust the ALC to match my transceiver's requirements? Thanks, NE7X...

Amp goes to bypass
6
My amp goes into bypass randomly on 6,10 and 12 meters. I run 6 – 160 on a 43 ft vertical. From 17 to 160 all is perfect. When it starts going into bypass I turn the amp off for a few minutes and it corrects itself. Very frustrating. My old Ameritron ALS-1300 never did this. I’m temped to go back to Ameritron and solve my problems. Any thoughts? Scott Sherer KC9WPS

Amp goes to Standby
12
My LA1K starts up on standby with no problem. I switch to ready and the first time I transmit it goes back into standby. Switch to ready again and it all works fine. This started after last software upgrade. Anyone else have this problem? TIA de K2HVE. Note: problem solved…….Dropped Drive down to 35 watts and everything is fine. Amp wasn’t overdriven just didn’t like the 40 watts and as stated just went into Standby. thanks all!

LA-1K Low oputput
10
I have three year old LA-1Kthat I purchased new. As of last night it was only capable of 25-300 watts output with 38 watts input from an Icom IC-7610. In the past I was getting 650-700 watts output from the LA-1K with the same driver input. SWR with the HF-Auto is 1.1/1.0. ANy ideas whats going on? W5HRH

New LA-1K Setup question
22
Hey guys. Thanks for having me. I have a brand new HF-Auto tuner and LA-1K amp that I have hooked up to my Icom 7610 with coax only. No ALC cable or band changing cable. The tuner is working fine but the amp isn't (yet). If I have the amp in standby and put 30 watts thru it and I am heard, it shows that I am sending 30 watts thru it on the meter. If I put it in operate and send 30 watts thru it shows only a few watts going thru, not 1000 (approx). I'm doing something wrong I'm sure. Any hints? Thanks in advance, Jeff KG9LD

QSK WITH THE LA-1K
2
New LA-1K owners joining the reflector may not realize that while the LA-1K is not capable of full break-in CW as it comes from the factor, it is possible to make it a full QSK amplifier with the addition of an electronic T/R switch specifically designed for such purpose. One such, which I have used nightly for several years, is the DXConnection QSK-2500 manufactured by K3HZP (https://qsk2500.myfreesites.net/k3hzp-dx-connection-background). The product is excellent and Bill's support is superb. 73, Kent K9ZTV

TS-890 and LA-1K
6
Im anxiously awaiting arrival of my LA-1k to match with my HF-Auto and tS-890. Any words of wisdom as far as setup/operation/etc? I'm curious how QSY works...How does one ensure the HF-AUtO does its thing first, then the LA-1K kicks in? All automatically? Programmable delays? Thanks! Ken, AC0DQ

Digital power limit
4
So wondering what everyone has been running for power in digital modes. The specs say 500 watts RTTY but if I need to run it for DX on FT8 275 to 300 watts will run the amp temp into the 80C range which is well into the red. I cant imagine this thing running 500 watts RTTY. Rich kd0zv

SWR Standby Messages
12
Thought I'd give the group a try with my first post. Happy to join. I am a second floor, Icom 7300, Hustler 6BTV vertical shack. I have a lightning arrester. Dummy load checks out fine in the shack. Snow here. Once it leaves I plan to place the dummy load at various spots on the RF path. Any helpful hints would be appreciated. Thanks and 73 Pete Bruderle KN4WTV

Has anyone tried putting any sound deadening in top of the cabinet to help with fan noise?

Antenna switch
4
I have no idea why, but if I am using ANT2, and switch bands, and switch antennas to ANT1, when I go to transmit, the LA-1K goes back to ANT2. Then I can switch it again to ANT1, and it stays there. I have no idea why it isnt staying on the ANT I have selected when I key up...but it apparently switches back to the last ANT position that was used for SSB.

When I turned my LA1k on today the display has changed. The numbers and lettering are all blue now. Is there a problem? I kinda like the blue.

la1k issue, does anyone have any advice?
26
Hi everyone, I’m getting a “bypass SWR” on my la1k on 10, 12 and 15 meters. Here is my configuration: 1. Yaesu FTDX-101MP 2. LA-1K 3. HF-Auto 4. MFJ 2990/2910 43’ vertical antenna. The Palstar troubleshooting guides says that there may be a loose connection or arcing. If that is the case, why do I not get “bypass SWR” on any other band? I replaced an Ameritron ALS-1300 amp with this amp and never had a problem with the old amp. Is the LA-1K too sensitive or do I really have a problem? BTW, I don’t have this problem on a dummy load or my OCF, which leads me to think it is an antenna problem. Any comments or advice would be greatly appreciated. Best regards, Scott Sherer KC9WPS
