On Ubuntu I have the default PDF reader set to Evince (ie as standard for Ubuntu). This works, in that if I double-click on a PDF file in the browser, Evince fires up and displays it. On Kicad I have the PDF viewer set to be the system default PDF viewer. So why is it that if I right click on a component in Eeschema and select Doc from the menu, Kicad tries to display the file using Gimp? How do I persuade it that Evince is the system default PDF viewer (and makes for a far better PDF viewer)?

First thing to try is from the main kicad control panel, use the preferences > pdf viewer > set pdf viewer that usually solves the problem You can also specify your favorite pdf viewer If none on that works, then you will need to poke about in the file associations and tweak the order of viewer preferences pushing gimp down to the bottom, and making sure that your system pdf program is in the list somewhere near the top. Sorry I've no idea as to where that setting is on Ubuntu, I use SUSE and KDE where it's in: settings > configure desktop > applications > file associations > (expand application tree) to find pdf. It would seem that Ubuntu has a Default Application (Evince), and (somewhere) a list of Recommended Applications. Gimp is at the top of the list of Recommended Applications for PDFs. Recommended Applications appear in the right-click Open With submenu, so represent a list of alternatives to the Default Application. I've given up trying to figure out how to edit the Recommended Applications list (on account of not being able to figure out where it is saved), and elected to change the kicad PDF viewer to be, specifically, Evince. SUSE also uses Evince as a default. If you have not already found it, the link below gives info on how to set Ubuntu default apps, assuming that the latest idiotic-twits version :-) have not messed with it. Thanks, but I had found that. As I said, the Default Application is set correctly to Evince in Ubuntu, but Kicad is taking the default PDF reader from the Recommended list. Changing the list (not that I know how to change it) to put Evince at the top is a bit pointless, because the Recommended list wont change if the Default Application changes.
