K10+
Hello Steve, Regarding the speed pot for the K10+ you recommend a 5K log, which seems strange to me. Wouldn't a linear one be better as it is sampled via an A/D converter? For Winkey you recommend a linear one. Jean-Claude Abauzit, PJ2BVU

K10+ Potentiometer
In the WK design the pot goes from the plus rail to ground. As the pot rotates it linearly divides the voltage. In the K10 design the pot is in series with a fixed resistance, as the pot rotates the voltage divides non-linearly with rotation. An audio taper pot is a better choice for the K10 design.

Fine control over character spacing.
In SD's internal keyer, I offer a feature that I haven't seen elsewhere, and I wonder if it could be implemented in WinKey. Basically, it extends the space between individual letter characters to make them more readable - particularly serial (in contests) and certain callsigns. It makes them sound more like you would send them yourself on paddles. I use ^ to represent the shortened space character, and I define it as one fifth of a letter space (one fifth of three units). As such, G3R^^T^^^E is easier to copy than G3RTE. For my own call, I use EI5^DI. The other place I use it is for serials in contests, and I refer to it as a "Serial Padding Factor" with values 0 to 5 With a factor of 2, serial 547 would be sent as 5^^4^^7. I haven't found an equivalent in WinKey's current instruction set. Any suggestions, please? 73, Paul EI5DI www.ei5di.com

WKTEST crashes?
Hi, Finally got to finish my WinKey and installed in a box. I cant get WKTEST to run on my PC. Get a GPF from the CRT.DLL module when I double click the icon to start the program. PC is Win98 SE, 200MHz Pentium, Standard COM ports, 64MB Ram. Any ideas? Also WKTERM says it cant see WinKey sometimes? Winkey is on Com1 and WKTERM has run. Not sure what i am supposed to do with it. It seemed to send di-dah continously when I pressed the P key? Help!!! de Paul G3WYW

Can't get C-Typer to work
Just finished assembling my WinKey kit and am trying to get it to work. Here's the setup: WinXP Home SP2 Com 1, set to 1200 baud, 8,N,1.5. ICOM IC-746PRO To make a long story short, it keys the rig fine when running WinKey Test Bed. Everything works, speed changes ok, can send from the keyboard with no problems. But when running C-Typer, the program loads ok but I can't get it to go into transmit mode. If I'm reading the manual right, pressing Pause/Break should put it in transmit, but nothing happens. "STANDBY" continues to flash and I can enter text in the box but there is no key output. However, going to the Config window and pressing the Test Dashes or Dots does send dots or dashes as it should. Am I making some simple blunder in the setup of C-Typer? All suggestions appreciated. -- 73, Bill W6WRT

Finally got C-Typer working
Found the problem: To go to TX mode, I have to press Shift- Pause/Break. The manual only says Pause/Break. Is that an error in the manual or is my system acting strange? -- Bill, W6WRT QSLs via LoTW

Winkey and Microham Keyer
Received the new keyer interface from MicroHam which includes the K1EL Winkey. All hooked up and working fine so far with a Pentium 4, Windows XP Home SP2, and IC-756PROII. Tested with N1MM contest program, TRX-Manager , MixW, MMTTY, Multipsk, Ham Radio Deluxe. The C-Typer program must also be running to use CW if using TRX- Manager or Mix, or everything will freeze as soon as I hit the paddle. If the Winkey port is configured, there must be a Winkey control program running when using a non Winkey supporting program. The C-Typer can be minimized, but running. Perhaps a future software patch from MicroHam will take care of this. Looking forward to the next CW contest to use Winkey and N1MM pgm. 73, John, N3WT

K40 and K12
I am finally taking orders for K40s ! Shipping starts on Oct. 14th. Also have a new kit, the K12, which takes the place of the K10+. The K12 is available now. 73 Steve K1EL

K10+ Power Supply
Althought the PIC consumes only 1 micro Amp when sleeping, the 78L05 consumes 3 mA. As the K10+ looses settings when powered off I am looking for some suggestions. Will a low drop out regulator stop the leak? Powering directly the pic without a regulator: power supply between 3V and 7V. Using a backup as in the beacon. In this case when do I know when the main battery is depleted as the backup will take over? Any suggestion will be welcomed. Jean-Claude Abauzit, PJ2BVU

ENCLOSURES
6
Just wondering what others might be using for an enclosure for the WinKey. Looks like I could fit it into an Altoids tin, but I've already got too many of those floating around with various things installed in them. Besides, I think the Winkey with the speed pot requires a more elegant enclosure than an Altoids tin<g> Thanks... 73, Ken K3IU

N1MM Paddle Speed
Hi, I am using Winkey for the first time with N1MM Logger. I see in the N1MM manual that the Winkey the paddles can be a different speed than the program generated cw but it seems locked to the program speed. If I turn the Winkey pot, both speeds change. F11 or F12 change both and moving the slide in the entry window change both. I've tried it with the potlock on and off in the Winkey testbed, it doesn't make a difference. Is there something I have missed? I'm currently running N1MM version 4.0.143, Winkey version 8 and XP home. Gary N2UM

K-40 Keyboard Keyer
I assembled my K-40 PC board today. Upon testing it out, I found that pushing keys on the keyboard would not make anything work. No sidetone and no output to turn on Q2. After playing around for a long time, I discovered the keyboard function would work if I first temporarily grounded the DAH pad on the PC board. I have to temporarily ground the pad every time I power up. I don't think it should do this. However, I will have to re-read the manual to see if I missed anything. NOTE: The DAH pad should be marked DIT because I get DITs from my DAH pad. I also noticed that my 6 pin resistor network P/N RN1 was 10K instead of 4.7K as shown in the parts list. I doubt this caused the above stated problem, but I'm no expert. This is as far as I've gotten with the project at this time. Thought I'd pass this on to possibly save others some grief.

K-40 LCD Display
I wired my LCD display to the K-40. My display uses the Samsung KS0070B controller instead of the Hitachi 44780 controller. I know very little about LCD displays, but information I found on the internet indicated the two controllers are compatible. Due to my limited knowlege, I will not guarantee that all displays using the KS0070B controller will work. My display was made by Unitech. It has large characters and a back light LED. The part number is UC162F- YP-FB-W-LG-YG. I got it cheap from an e-bay auction. My display did not show any characters until I adjusted the K-40's 10K pot to ground. You will see nothing if the voltage is too high. The characters get lighter as the pot is adjusted away from ground towards +5 volts. If the voltage is too high, you see nothing. If, like me, you are deficient in knowledge about LCD displays, you can find good info about interfacing at... http://www.myke.com/lcd.htm Please don't send me e-mail asking a lot of questions about LCD displays since my knowledge is very limited. I found out the little I know from searching the internet.

Kit update
Well, I won't introduce three new kits all at once again ! It has been a rough couple of weeks. Here's the latest scoop... K12: Some kits were inadvertently shipping minus the speaker, please email me if you need one and I'll mail one to you. K40: The power on hang problem (need to press Shift-F8 twice) has been fixed. Please send in the two PICs and I'll upgrade them at no charge. Winkey: The upgrade to WK v9 has been pretty smooth. I have had some reports of WKs not working with some but not all apps. If so email me and I'll see if you might have a mis-programmed v9 chip. Many Winkey chips were shipped with voltage regulators that will not work in some circumstances. If you see about 2.0 volts on the output of the regulator instead of 5 volts the regulator needs to be replaced. Email me and I'll send you a new once. -Steve K1EL

LCD Display Source
I found this place on the net which has good prices and a large selection of displays which should work on the K40: http://www.character-lcd-lcds.shopeio.com/ Navigate to LCDs->character displays Look for 2 x 16 displays with HD77480 display controller interface.

TRX-Manger program now supports Winkey
The TRX-Manager PC control and logging program now supports Winkey with a CW keyboard tool, with buffers interfaced with the log call and macros. It is in beta stage , released to current users now as a upgrade, but should be a full new release soon. Also works with the MicroHam keyer which includes the Winkey board. 73, N3WT John
