Re: WKmini nao USB sold by Kanga

It uses a genuine WK3 IC and the board design is a collaboration between Paul and I. He added a couple of extra features to make it a WKmini+
He sells that and also a WKUSB. Nothing more to it than that. No version exclusions or preview of future products.

I know nothing about VAT between UK and EU. I only know that I am unable to sell in either market due to the complexity of the new customs and commodity laws there.

My new Winkeyer, still in it's shipping box is currently residing in a package locker down the street.

Thing is, none of the keys work to open that locker.

The postal system has to put in a work order to fix that locker.

I am still waiting.

Strange.

I have to respond to this because it is not all true.?

First of all, not all WinKeyers use FTDI interfaces. We moved over to the CH340 a few years ago and have stayed with them.?

Secondly, I would never recommend changing both the WK and USB ICs as a general solution to an issue. It is very easy to determine where a fault is and we have rarely found both parts fail at the same time. The only exception would be a close lightning strike.

It should show as Future Technology Devices International, Ltd FT232 Serial (UART) IC

Typically when the computer boots it runs a search for USB devices and orders the Comm ports , as long as the configuration is stable , the comm ports will stay stable . If however another device is added , the computer will reorder the ports and your device may end up on a different comm port . This can be a PIA with laptops as pluging in to a different comm port can cause the port to move.

The Winkeyer USB has 2 devices a PIC16 and a FTDI 232 to USB device . Usually rather than troubleshoot its easier just to replace all the silicon. I believe WK3 is the latest version and is backward compatible with most of the hardware for WKUSB,

Mine is about 13 -14 years old and has a WK3 in it.

Scott,
I did respond to your direct email and recommended returning it for repair. Since it’s most likely a problem with the USB interface there isn’t really a magic DIY solution you can try. Changing out the WK IC is not going to help. The issue we discussed was whether it’s worth 2 way international postage to fix it. I suppose I could send you a replacement main board but that will end up costing more than a repair.

Putting a different,.nee, winkeyer in line works fine which suggests the issue is with the problematic winkeyer.

Sorry, that would take a lot of digging to figure out. It’s the main chip of the device… but he has many models
