Wondering if any one has experienced the winkeyer just stopped working and no longer being found by the computer?
?
Its worked like a champ for about 2 yrs or so, but suddenly started to be a bit erratic and finally stopoped altogether. As a stand alone it works but the paddles are now reversed...unable to get he computer to see it. Swapping in teh winkeyer mini to the same computer, all works fine.
?
Anyone with similar issues or ideas??

I can’t say that this has anything to do with it, but once I looked up how those chips do ESD protection and it’s so incredibly complicated it blew my mind. It would seem to me that this might be a weak spot of these kinds of chips. ? I don’t know much more about it than that. But it appeared that the problems I had potentially related to wearing out the ESD protection.

Agreed. The design and function is very impressive but subject to limitations. Certainly the chip responsible for the USB com port portion seems suspect...its honestly? here nor there. I have a back up and remain convinced this is one of the better values in our hobby today...the way this device?can integrate?countless radios to software blows my mind. Just happy there are folks willing to put it all together for us.?

Scott, I did respond to your direct email and recommended returning it for repair. Since it’s most likely a problem with the USB interface there isn’t really a magic DIY solution you can try. Changing out the WK IC is not going to help. The issue we discussed was whether it’s worth 2 way international postage to fix it. I suppose I could send you a replacement main board but that will end up costing more than a repair. Steve K1EL?

WinKeyer is great ad I have had no trouble with it. On the other hand I really would lo vet support for my MMFJ 464 reader as it is both Paddle and Keyboard. DXLab supports it but N1M D9WES NIT. Not likely to ever support it as it is not produced any more and N1MM has too much else to do. you said your using it in standalone ? Battery powered ? check the batteries , if the voltage drops to low the microprocessors internal supervisor will shut it down .
When you say the computer doesn't see the keyer are you just looking at the comm ports or are you running something like lsusb that looks at the whole usb system ? It should show as Future Technology Devices International, Ltd FT232 Serial (UART) IC
Typically when the computer boots
it runs a search for USB devices and orders the Comm ports , as long as
the configuration is stable , the comm ports will stay stable . If
however another device is added , the computer will reorder the ports
and your device may end up on a different comm port . This can be a PIA with laptops as pluging in to a different comm port can cause the port to move.
The Winkeyer USB has 2 devices a PIC16 and a FTDI 232 to USB device . Usually rather than troubleshoot its easier just to replace all the silicon. I believe WK3 is the latest version and is backward compatible with most of the hardware for WKUSB,
Mine is about 13 -14 years old and has a WK3 in it.

I have to respond to this because it is not all true.?
First of all, not all WinKeyers use FTDI interfaces. We moved over to the CH340 a few years ago and have stayed with them.?
Secondly, I would never recommend changing both the WK and USB ICs as a general solution to an issue. It is very easy to determine where a fault is and we have rarely found both parts fail at the same time. The only exception would be a close lightning strike. Steve K1EL?
