ARISS Contact is Scheduled with Students at?TEACH-NW Charter School, Springfield, Oregon, USA
ARISS Contact is Scheduled with Students at TEACH-NW Charter School, Springfield, Oregon, USA October 16, 2024¡ªAmateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) has received schedule confirmation for an ARISS radio contact between an astronaut aboard the International Space Station (ISS) and students at the TEACH-NW Charter School located in Springfield, OR. ARISS conducts 60-100 of these special amateur radio contacts each year between students around the globe and crew members with ham radio licenses aboard the ISS. TEACH-NW, is a K-12 virtual school serving 650 students. In advance of this ARISS contact, students have been involved in hands-on workshop allowing them to construct a high-gain antenna that will be used for this radio contact with the ISS. Through STEM studies and virtual talks about NASA¡¯s Artemis program and Mars Rover missions, students have been learning about space travel and the scientific principles behind space technology and experiments conducted in space. Additionally, English Language Arts teachers have introduced modules on Mars and space travel, utilizing both scientific texts and science fiction to spark imagination and deepen their understanding. This will be a direct contact via Amateur Radio allowing students to ask their questions of astronaut Sunita Williams, amateur radio call sign KD5PLB. The downlink frequency for this contact is 145.800 MHz and may be heard by listeners that are within the ISS-footprint that also encompasses the relay ground station. The amateur radio ground station for this contact is in Springfield, OR. Amateur radio operators using call sign KJ7NLL, will operate the ground station to establish and maintain the ISS connection. The ARISS radio contact is scheduled for October 18, 2024 at 11:27 am PDT (Springfield, OR) (18:27 UTC, 2:27 pm EDT, 1:27 pm CDT, 12:27 pm MDT). The public is invited to watch the live stream at: https://www.youtube.com/@KJ7NLL/streams _______________________________ As time allows, students will ask these questions: 1. Does the International Space Station make its own oxygen for the astronauts? 2. What kind of plant experiments happen on the International Space Station? 3. Are there any projects you have worked on that make travel to other planets a possibility? 4. How do you communicate with the other astronauts if everyone speaks different languages? 5. What is your mission while you are up there? 6. What does your day-to-day look like at the International Space Station? 7. How has spending time in space changed your perspective on life on Earth? 8. What is your favorite astronomical sight that you've gotten to see that is not the Earth? 9. Do astronauts ever get bored in space? 10. Is your favorite food from Earth something they were able to dehydrate and send to space? 11. What is your favorite study that you have been a part of? 12. What is the most challenging thing about being an astronaut? 13. Throughout your whole experience of becoming and being an astronaut, if there were to be one thing you could change, what would that be? 14. Why did you decide to become an astronaut? 15. Have you seen the Aurora Borealis from space? 16. How does it feel to be weightless? 17. Who is the youngest person up there? 18. Have any astronauts brought a pet to the ISS? 19. If you eat or drink something, does your body digest it the same way as it would on Earth? 20. What is your favorite part of being an astronaut?

SOTA Video and Jefferson SOTA invite 2
I usually don't do youtube but this is probably the easiest way to share the slideshow I forgot. Mainly just highlight pics from 2019-2022. we live in such an amazingly beautiful area that I only knew a fraction of before sota. You also may recognize some locations and faces. You can see its far more than just about radio for me. Some of these pics are though some of the most difficult losses I've gone through. Summiting and the SOTA community have been my PT and mental health support! You have to have the link to watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4MFfJzPYt0 I also have a groups.google for Jefferson State SOTA. It isn't very active other than during the campout time. However, we do want to start meeting locally on a regular basis and it is a good place to find hiking partners. https://groups.google.com/u/1/g/jefferson-state-sota 73!

SOTA Lecture 19
All, Please let me know if you are interested in a SOTA (Summits on the Air) lecture put on by Amy Haptonstall (AG7GP). Summits on the Air (sota.org.uk) From our club meeting, it sounded like a Saturday 1pm class was of more interest than a 1hr Zoom class. The idea with the in-person class is we would possibly take a field trip to Hamaker (weather permitting) after the class and do a SOTA activation. For dates, I'm thinking October 12th or 19th. The later we go, the more chance of bad weather. Please let me know if you're interested and what date works best for you so we can put something together. Thanks, Charlie / K7AKT

Electric Chair(that drives VA nuts, Its a power Chair Bill) 2
Only thing this has to do with Ham Radio it the common compassion, sharing and caring we have for other folks. I have a used electric chair, if you know anyone who can use it. Its a bit smaller than usual, no idea how old it is, its clean and in good working shape. Don't have to worry bout a charging unit, plugs in to wall outlet. Works well on hard surfaces, gravel and loose dirt not so much. Call Bill(KA6KBY) @ 541533 2407. leave message.

Winlink Weekly Exercise Postponement
Greetings Please see request below from the Winlink Team. The Winlink Development Team is requesting that all non-essential Winlink traffic (weekly nets, testing, etc.) be postponed until after hurricane Milton has moved on and response efforts have turned to recovery. There is still a lot of traffic in the aftermath of Helene, and we expect Milton will add significantly to that. We need to keep the gateways clear for that traffic. Hurricane Watch Net
For your information Fwd by N2RSN >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> From: Bobby Graves - KB5HAV <kb5hav@...> Sent: Sunday, October 6, 2024 17:35 To: 'Bobby Graves - KB5HAV' <kb5hav@...> Subject: [Non-DoD Source] Tropical Cyclone Milton - Tentative Activation Plans Net Announcement ¨C TENTATIVE ACTIVATION PLANS Sunday, October 6, 2024 @ 6:00 PM EDT (2230 UTC) The information contained in this email is going to numerous amateur radio nets, government and non-government agencies, as well as various amateur radio news outlets. Hello Everyone, Please help me in spreading the following information. The Hurricane Watch Net is making tentative plans to activate on Tuesday afternoon for Hurricane Milton. The current forecast, issued at 5:00 PM EDT Sunday is calling for Milton to become a powerful Category 4 Hurricane with sustained winds of 145 miles per hour. This is the same strength Helene was at landfall a week ago. Additionally, Milton is expected to be at least a Cat 2 Hurricane after crossing Florida and entering the Atlantic Ocean. Those in Bermuda need to keep a close eye on Milton as this storm could possibly affect the island on Saturday. For now, these are our tentative activation plans. Tentative Activation Plans: Tuesday (Line Up Reporting Stations, EOCs, Storm Shelters) ¡¤ 20 meters: 14.325 MHz (USB) at 5:00 PM EDT (2100 UTC) until we lose propagation at night. ¡¤ 40 meters: 7.268 MHz (LSB) at 5:00 PM EDT (2100 UTC). We will remain active on this frequency throughout the day and overnight for as long as propagation allows. If propagation allows us to operate all night, we will suspend operations at 7:30 AM EDT Wednesday to allow the Waterway Net to conduct their daily Net. Wednesday (Landfall Day) ¡¤ 20 meters: we will resume operations on 14.325 MHz at 7:00 AM EDT (1100 UTC) and remain active until we lose propagation at night. ¡¤ 40 meters: we will resume operations on 7.268 MHz at 8:30 AM EDT (1230 UTC). We will remain active on this frequency throughout the day and overnight for as long as propagation allows. If propagation allows us to operate all night, we will suspend operations at 7:30 AM EDT Thursday to allow the Waterway Net to conduct their daily Net. Thursday (Post Storm Reports, Emergency Traffic, Health & Welfare Traffic. ¡¤ 20 meters: we will resume operations on 14.325 MHz at 7:00 AM EDT (1100 UTC). ¡¤ 40 meters: we will resume operations on 7.268 MHz at 8:30 AM EDT (1230 UTC). Any change to these plans will be posted here, our website, www.hwn.org, and our social media pages. As with any Net Activation, if you are to be in the affected area of Milton, please take all necessary precautions to protect your family and yourself! If are in a position to safely do so, we would love to have check in with us and provide your observed weather information. While we greatly appreciate measured data, we gladly accept estimated weather data as well. We relay that data to the National Hurricane Center in Miami. This information is extremely important to the forecasters as it gives them more information as to what the storm is or is not doing. It also helps them to provide a more accurate forecast! If you are in an evacuation zone, please heed the instructions of your local officials. To everyone in the path of this storm. Do NOT focus on the forecast track of the center of this storm. This will be a very powerful and deadly storm. Take all necessary precautions to protect yourself and your family. If you have to evacuate to a Storm Shelter, if you have portable HF station (a Go-Kit), please ask your shelter if you can set it up there. If so, please check in with us. We can help you keep up with the storm and help you with any traffic you may have. As we did for Helene, once Hurricane Milton has exited the state into the Atlantic, the Hurricane Watch Net will remain active on both frequencies to help with Emergency Traffic, Health & Welfare Traffic with assistance from SATERN, and to collect and forward post-storm reports to the National Hurricane Center. We will remain active until our services are no longer required. To all official a

National Preparedness Month: Ensuring Family Safety 2
For more information about the Klamath Falls ARES group, please visit https://www.klamathares.org/ National Preparedness Month: Ensuring Family Safety September is National Preparedness Month. In coordination with our partners at the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the ARRL Amateur Radio Emergency Service? (ARES?) is producing a series of weekly articles to help radio amateurs and their families stay safe. See previous stories: https://www.arrl.org/news/resilience-through-amateur-radio-for-national-preparedness-month https://www.arrl.org/news/national-preparedness-month-have-a-go-kit For a ham or any other public safety responder, whether paid or volunteer, it is not uncommon to be called out to provide assistance during disasters. We often do not know when we will be called or exactly what the call will involve. We also do not know how long we may be deployed. In the last edition, we focused on our go kit and the tools we should have to deploy as an amateur radio volunteer. But have we made sure our family is prepared for these times, whether we are deployed or will be staying home? As the theme of this month suggests, ARRL Director of Emergency Management Josh Johnston, KE5MHV, says it comes down to being prepared. "Make a plan with your family and ensure basic supplies are available including water, food and first aid capabilities. Do you have a generator or alternate power capabilities and do your family members know how to use it? Have a communications plan, including backup communications, with family members and friends," he said. Johnston says to ensure your family knows where to go if they must evacuate for some reason. Always remember your family and your health and safety should always come first. "Remember that there may be a time that you are the victim. There may be a time that you must turn down a request for assistance because you must take care of your family first. Ask if you can be put in a slot later down the roster to allow time to get your family to safety or have everything settled to ensure your family is cared for before deployment," said Johnston. ARRL recognizes the tremendous work ham radio volunteers put into serving their communities. "If your mind is not on the mission, you may be putting yourself and others at risk. Therefore, you should ensure your family's wellbeing before, during and after a major event," Johnston continued. Learn about how to become an ARES Volunteer on the ARRL website at www.arrl.org/ares.
