Making special interests easy to find: The Hashtag
Greetings All, Hashtags are a great way to identify special interests and to filter them from the rest of the traffic. With any luck, the Hashtag menu item on the left will start to look like a topical directory. I will start the ball rolling with a few of my special interest areas. #ARES-EmComm #PacketRadio #MeshNetworking #VoIP-General #VoIP-HamshackHotline

We still have a few Arrow #J-Pole antennas left!
#j-pole
The club has recently purchased few J-Pole antennas from Arrow to make available to local hams at a reduced price. These are about 2/3 of the $60 price that Arrow will charge you; plus there are no shipping charges! These antennas are dual-band and cover the 2m and 70cm bands. In the past, it was popular to construct these out of copper pipe but with the price of copper nowadays I seriously one could be constructed that matches the performance, quality, and integrity of these Arrow J-Pole antennas. So if you are interested in purchasing one of these $40 antennas send me an email direct WO7V@... we will work it out. So far we have sold 5 and only have 5 left so pick them up while you can! 73, Jim WO7V

#Contesting
#contesting
For those of you that are chasing paper such as DXCC or WAS there is no quicker way to obtain these than jumping into the contest arena. Be careful though as contesting can become rather addictive. When searching for Worked All States using contests state-sponsored QSO parties are very good at grabbing that state you have been trying to get into your log. That being said today happens to be one of the better ones, the 7QP QSO party which to those that don't know stands for the call area number 7 QSO party. It includes all of the states in call area 7 which by the authority of the Federal Communications Commission, Oregon just happens to be in! In addition to 7QP, there are also QSO parties in all the states of New England (CT, ME, NH, RI, VT) Delaware (which is always difficult as I am sure only 3 hams live there), and Indiana. Generally, Indiana is an easy state to get into your log but the states in New England arent. The 7QP contest is sponsored by Dick Frey, K4XU who lives up in Bend OR. Below is some more info for those interested. 73, Jim WO7V Are you ready for 7QP? Checklist: Saturday May 1st reserved for 7QP operation Radio working on all bands All antennas up and ready Logging program installed, (N1MM+, N3FJP, etc,) Radio connected to computer 7QP website checked for needed Oregon counties Going mobile? Radio installed and antennas tuned Driver or copilot rounded up Route planned Notify 7QP of your intended operation at 7qpops@... No, you don't have to put in a full 18 hour effort. We just want Oregon to be well represented. This is your chance to be DX for a day.The weather will be nice and we have reserved an extra sunspot just for the occasion. We still need a few counties, like Washington, Jackson, and Umatilla to insure we have all 36 Oregon counties on the air. Check out the planned operations page on the 7QP web site. Got questions? Look at the FAQs on the 7QP site or send an inquiry to info@.... 7QP is now the second biggest QSO party in the country. California is still #1, but we keep trying. I'm looking forward to hearing you! 73, -- Dick Frey, K4XU 7QP chairman

#Baluns Baluns Baluns

#baluns
Every ham that operates HF will eventually find the need for a Balun. What does a Balun do? Why would I ever need a Balun? What are the different types of Baluns? What is the difference between a Voltage Balun and a Current Balun? Here is your chance to find out the answer to at least some of these questions and end up with a Balun to use at your QTH. For those of you who are members of the ARRL, there was an article in your April 2021 issue of QST on page 61 describing the Lake City Radio Klub (LARK) efforts in South Dakota replacing the baluns on their dipole antennas. What is described is essentially a Balun construction and testing exercise. I thought the local hams might benefit from a similar exercise to build their own 1:1 Current Balun that will handle legal limit power from 160m through 10m. I have purchased enough materials to construct 10 of these Baluns. I'm going to reserve 4 of these for myself and the club. Thus, on some Saturday after Field Day this summer I will be hosting a workshop in my shop to construct Baluns. This workshop will be limited to 6 persons and the cost will be $30 to cover the cost of materials. Not bad for something that would normally cost you close to $100 if you were to purchase it. So reserve your spot now. Details of the exact date will be determined based on the number of respondents. 73, Jim WO7V BTW, you don't have to purchase and build a balun you still welcome to sit on the in on the disertation but space is still very limited so please respond stating that you will NOT be purchasing a balun.

Missing Dongle
5
I want to thank everyone who helped out with the VHF contest this past weekend. It was a good shakedown for field day and pointed out a lot of issues that need to be addressed. However sometime during the contest, the USB dongle that connects the keyboard and mouse to the computer was removed and is now nowhere to be found. Also, the batteries to both the mouse and keyboard were also removed. Hey, all this stuff was working perfectly on Friday before Al moved the trailer so I see no need for anything to have been changed. So if anyone happened to put the (very small) dongle into their pocket or knows where it is located in the trailer please let me know. Otherwise, we will have to purchase a new keyboard and mouse. 73, Jim WO7V - *"A startup is a human institution designed to deliver a product or service in conditions of extreme uncertainty" - Eric Ries*

Field day egg beater antennas
Hello everybody, Field day this year will be held at the Klamath Falls Airport in the same location as last year. Setup is late afternoon on this Friday June 25th. Operations begin at 11:00 AM on Saturday June 26th and extend to Sunday June 27th. A pot luck picnic will follow and everybody is welcome. We are in need of CW operators but any ham regardless of class that wants to put their butt in a chair and operate any mode is welcome. In preparation for field day we decided to add some satellite antennas to the club trailer. We purchased a set from M squared and mounted them on the tower. The bicycle chain and sprockets keep them in the proper orientation regardless of whether the tower is up or down. Here are a couple pics: BTW, here are the set of frequencies currently loaded into the FT-8800 for working satellites: FT-8800 Satellite Channels Memory Location Satellite Name Downlink Frequency (MHz) Uplink Frequency (MHz) CTCSS (Hz) 30 AO-91 145.96 435.25 67 31 AO-92 145.88 435.35 67 32 PO-101 145.9 437.5 141.3 33 SO-50 436.795 145.85 67 34 ISS 437.8 145.9 67 73, Jim WO7V - "Every time you provide an option, you're asking the user to make a decision. W7VW Field Day 2021
Hello everybody, The W7VW field day event for the second year was held just outside the Klamath Falls airport. Although very dusty and hot the site offers the space to erect several antennas and the proximity to the city. It turns out that this year was actually the best. Band conditions were a little improved over last year but the thing that made the effort outstanding was the participation. Except for the GOTA station and the single QSO that Al completed on 2 meters all the Q's were done by either CW or Digital using FT8. And for the first year since I have been involved the club trailer was never shut down. At about 10 pm on Saturday the "night shift" took over and ran the unit until morning. This effort shows up in the total score of 2472 which is much improved over last year of about 1600. Unfortunately, we failed to keep a sign-in sheet for all of the participants that helped with the setup, teardown, and operation. The following list is from memory so if I have failed to mention someone please let me know and, after offering a full apology for missing you as a participant, I will sign you up to keep track of the list of participants next year. Regardless of whether you are on the list or not, I would like to thank everyone who participated and helped out with the operation. Field Day Operators and participants: Lisa Johnson K7NSP Al White W7KHD Bob Edgar AG7FR Jeff Eastburn KJ7IRV Dale Severns KJ7RGW Jim English WO7V David Bell N2RSN Chuck Huckabay KJ7KWR Dennie Dunkinsun WA7YPR Jimmy Huckabay KC7WJ Charles Boening K7AKT Kevin Joo KJ7LLE Eric Munson W6HIH Sydney Fowler KB7GAB Brandon Fowler AE7BF For the second year in a row Lisa Johnson, K7NSP was our safety officer. With the addition of a pair of "egg beater" antennas for the club trailer, this year we tried very hard to complete at least one QSO by using a Satellite. After a lot of work, we were able to hear a couple but were never able to actually complete a QSO. Oh well, we learned a lot and there is always next year. Some of the notable QSOs were some DX in New Zealand. We also worked at the ARRL headquarters station W1AW on CW. Another thing different this year is that there were actually 2 active operating positions in the club trailer. The night shift composed of Jeff, Bobby, and Dale was running FT8 on both of them on 80M and 40M. In the morning we switched to run on 40m and 20m. As much as you might think of 20m as being the money band most of the Q's were completed on 40m. The FT8 mode is very easy to operate, but you have to pay attention to what is going on. That being said it is entirely possible for a single operator to run two radios on two bands simultaneously. In fact, this is exactly what was being done for the last 12 hours of the operation. The setup on Friday was a little disappointing due to the poor performance of the R-7 antenna on the tower. Early Saturday morning it was determined that the coax feed on the tower was bad. We will be replacing both of these in the near future. So for those of you that would like to see a little more detail the following is the summary sheet by the field day entry submission to the ARRL. Field Day absentee
2
Hello all, I've had yet another family incident that is going to have me wrapped up the next several days, so I will be once again missing our Field Day fun. Hopefully I'll get to stop by at some point to at least say hello and cheer you all on, but it's not looking very promising. I hope it's a great weekend operating and I'll see you all as soon as I can. 73, Erik KD6RRR

October 16th. SwapToberfest. Rickereall, Oregon.
Hello Everybody, Pandemic got you down? Are you all itching for that good old ham radio swap meet? Well it looks like the Mid Valley Amateur Radio club in Salem has decided to go ahead with Swaptoberfest this fall on Saturday, October 16 in Rickreall Oregon. Rickreall is just a few miles west of Salem on highway 22. I expect it to be very crowded this fall because of the pent up demand from the pandemic. As with any other ham activity, if you get there on time you will be late! 73, Jim WO7V

Crater Rim Run (K-BAR-A Trailer) Repeater on the air.
For those of you planning on volunteering for this year's Crater Lake Rim Run event it is time to program and test your radios. For the event the trailer will be located at the turn-around atop the cloud cap lookout. From cloud cap the trailer repeater will cover most of the park. So to get ready for the event please program your radios. The trailer repeater operates on VHF at 147.32MHz with a 118.8Hz tone. For the next two weeks until the early morning of August 14th it will be turned on and activated at it's temporary location at my QTH on Wiard Street. Thus most anyone in the local area should be able to use it to test the programming on their radios. Currently it has a very short squelch tail so with my cheap Baofeng I could not tell if I could hit it but it was working. I will try to lengthen the squelch tail a bit. We will also have an APRS digipeater running in the trailer so feel free to bring your APRS tracker. In fact, I would encourage it. Lastly, this reflector only has about 40 members so far. Thus, this announcement may not get to everyone so if you know anyone that should have received it please forward this information and encourage them to actually join this reflector by sending me an email to WO7V@... and I will send them an invite to join. 73, Jim WO7V
