Unable to connect to CANUSB 8
I have a Raspberry Pi 4, which I would like to run my layout from. I have Ubuntu 22.04.5 LTS installed. I have JMRI 5.11.3 installed. I will be running on MERG CANBUS. I've been creating my layout in simulated mode and decided to connect up to the hardware. I changed the properties to use CAN and saved, I get this error message. After a bit of rooting around on the NET I found a command that produces the following So it appears the ttyACM0 is being recognised. Any suggestions? Neil W

JMRI menus don't open using Real VNC to RPi 4 #rpi #vnc
Using recently downloaded RPi image from Steve Todd, when I try to open a PanelPro menu item such as LocoNet, I get a flash but the menu never opens... It returns to pre-clicked state. I am using Real VNC connecting to RPi 3B. Steve's image is slightly modified in that the AP SSID is now RPi-NRMRC2 and the Pi name is also RPi-NRMRC2. RealVNC connects without error. Updating ESU LokPilot Decoder for Alternating Ditch Light CV's using DecoderPro 2 #esu
I have a ESU LokPilot micro DCC direct decoder. I discovered that when I attempted to update CV 16.0.314 (phase shift for Aux 6) and CV 16.0.330 (phase shift for Aux 8) both with a value of 32, that these CV's were not listed on the CV list. Upon an inquiry at ESU, the advice was to build a project using lok programmer, export a full cv list and then import this cv list into the roster entry in decoderpro and it would update the decoderpro cv list and apply the value. Somewhat surprisingly, I attempted this and it was successful. First, is there another way to adjust "phase shift" within DecoderPro to achieve alternating ditch lights? Clicking on Phase Reverse in the Function Output tab doesn't seem to help alternate the ditch light flashing. Second, Is there a reference for other CV's that may be missing from the decoderpro library for ESU loksound and lokpilot 5 decoders? I am using DecoderPro 5.10 & Java 17.0.11 so I think I have the most updated releases. Thank you, Kevin

Resurrection of a layout 8
Gentlemen and if there’s any ladies here, I have taken on the task of resurrecting a world class layout for a friend that has been dormant for a number of years. This is a really involved undertaking as the layout was setup with JMRI. It is controlled turnouts and signals as well all detection through a series of digitrax and Team digital hardware. My issue comes from the original owner and builder of the layout has passed away and left the layout to his cousin. The layout has remained where it was built and still operates somewhat but, not to the level it was before he passed. The computer that everything is setup on is on its last leg operating on XP. JMRI ver 3.16 I believe. I am gonna replace the computer and obviously it will be JMRI 5.10 at least as well as a windows 11 machine. Can anyone give me a little guidance pulling all the setup into the new machine? I’ve backed everything up the best I can tell on thumb drives and working with win 10 at home just to try and get a feel for integration. Sorry this is so long winded I wanted to offer the back story so there was an understanding what I’m up against. The layout is running and operating but the integration to a newer machine and software is where I’m stumbling a little. Thanks for any help Chris Stephens

Decoder Pro - NCE or Digitrax? 4 #powerpro #soundtraxx #digitrax #esu-decoders
Hi Everyone I have two questions regarding programing using JMRI version 5.10+Rca461bd266 on my Windows 11 desktop: 1. Which DDC control system works best - or is better suited; my existing NCE PH-Pro Radio command station or Digitrax DCS210+ Command Station/Booster? 2. Which decoder manufacturer works best - or is better suited for both steamers and diesels; Soundtraxx or ESU LokSound? I'm ready to revamp my DCC systems/decoders, going forward. I really appreciate your feedback/opinions. -- Blessings TheTrainRev

disable interrogate: 8
Howdy All: I think it would be helpful for me to disable interrogate on my remoter panel computers. The DCC system is Digitrax, Computers are a combo of W7 and w10 Java version on all is 8.201 or better JMRI version is 4.26+r38lc8dfc32 on the main dispatcher PC JMRI version is 4.16+r6f9aced on my the TCP server PC that feeds 3 other PCs. I start the dispatcher computer first. It interrogates the railroad and then via start up routes all the switches to normal. Then I start the TCP server computer and it too will interrogate the railroad. None of the nine remote monitors displaying panels use sensors in the panels just switches. The other 3 computers also interrogate the railroad. This can and has locked up the usb port on the locobuffer of the TCP computer. So my question: is there is a way to disable the interrogate function when panel pro is started? “Best of it” Wayne Betty 717.951.5055 Cos Communications, Inc.

Decoder Pro / WiThrottle Protocol: Is there a standard for Function Labels? 4 #functionlabels #withrottleserver
Hi Folks, I am developing my own hardware throttle based on Geoff Bunza's concepts. The WiThrottle protocol sends the "function labels" to the throttle when a locomotive is selected. In this way, we can know that F20 is "Dynamic Brake" (for example). I would like to parse the incoming function labels so that I can determine which function (F20 in the example) is mapped to "Dynamic Brake". My question is whether there's a standard for those labels. Or could one decoder call it "Dynamic Brakes" [plural] and another call it "Dynamics", and another call it "Dyn Brks", etc.? I do realize that a user can change the labels at will, but most people don't - they stick with the default that's in the decoder definition xml. I was unable to locate the answer on the JMRI website. Thanks for your help. Regards, -Jeff

One Industry, Seven Tracks 7 #operationspro
Greetings. Can JMRI be set up to work on just one industry? I have an ADM plant. It contains seven tracks. Track one to load DDG into Covered Hoppers. Tracks 2 and 3 for incoming corn loads to be dumped. Tracks 4, 5 and 6 for storage. Could me loads waiting for an open spot. Could be empties that need to be picked up by the local to be sent to the midwest for more corn. Track 7 to load ethanol for shipment. Tracks 1, 2 and 3 can hold 3 cars each. Tracks 4, 5 and 6 can hold 4 cars each. Track 7 can hold 3 tank cars. What I envision is a local train delivers loads and empties on a regular basis. Then a dedicated plant switcher does the grunt work. Pulling empty cars from 2 and 3 and bringing loaded cars in from storage. The switcher would move loads under the shed and over the pits. I was thinking having an alarm set up on my phone to ring every few minutes to indicate a car is empty, push the next one in. Something like that. So looking for some guidance. Thanks

Raspberry Pi - panel placement for Roster, Preferences, DCC-EX Monitor maximized at fixed locations. 19 #preferences #roster #rpi
I just finished building a DCC-EX station and a RPI 5 with JMRI. All items are the latest production versions (JMRI, JAVA, DCC-EX RaspOS) Things are coming together nicely. Learning as I go. One quirk I'm seeing is the Roster panel within Panel-Pro maximizes to the upper left and can't be moved about like other identity panels. This also holds true for Preferences and DCC-EX Monitor. Is this a bug ? or what dictates the placement of the panel upon opening the item? Thanks in advance

Steve Todd image window partly offscreen 2 #rpi
This isn't strictly a JMRI problem. I am setting up Steve Todd's image and while editing the Preferences somehow managed to get the window to the top of the screen with the window title bar not showing. Please how do I reposition the window. I don't know if it is JMRI or the OS has remembered it and I don't know where to look to see if I can change it. -- Dale Gloer Jack of all trades at home and Southern Alberta Model Railway

Challenges with small switching layout 7 #operationspro
I have built a small switching layout closely following this plan: https://www.layoutvision.com/folding-alameda-belt-line The only major difference is that I've put the Carfloat on the baseboard so cars cycle on and off in different sessions. There is no off layout staging or rotating of cars. Some spurs have limited car acceptance (the Del Monte Flats, the oil tanks), but most do not (including the interchange and Carfloat). I'm struggling to combine the following operating objectives in Operations Pro: 1. Cars from the car float should all be set out to a spot, or placed in the three yard track below the run-around on the right side (essentially an offspot for every other spur) 2. Cars from the interchange should be treated the same (set out or placed in the off-spot) 3. I'm wanting each door in the DelMonte flat (top left of the layout) to be a unique location to cause some switching. Each door is currently configured as a 2-boxcar long spur to allow a car to be routed to either track in front of each door (either directly next to the flat or on the parallel track). 4. The DelMonte doors do not ship to each other, but cars from there can go to any other spur. Here is what I have tried so far a. If I build a train that uses a route with a single location with all of the spurs include, with 4-pass Aggressive Build enabled, JMRI does a good job of just shuffling everything around (the Local Switcher configuration from the instructions). However the Del Monte Flat doors ship to one another, which is undesirable. Is there a recommend way to prevent generating car movement between specific spurs? I have started looking at Schedules with a custom load for each door, but it seems like I would have to manually fill in the loads before the operating session (undesirable) or have dedicated cars and sequences for the individual doors which I'm worried would gum up the layout a little bit. I'd prefer "any boxcar from any other spur, or a subset thereof, can be routed to a given Del Monte Door, but not between them" b. I experimented with making the Interchange track a JMRI "Staging" track which created a very nice switch list for the incoming train with matching drop offs and pickups, however then there was no local switching between the other spurs. It seems from the instructions that it might be an either or situation (local switching vs set outs and pick ups). Am I missing something that would allow me to combine them?

Problem with DCCEX and three way turnouts in panel editor. #dcc-ex #paneleditor
Hello, I have deleted my previous message because it was unclear and my images were crap... So let do it again :) I use JMRI 5.11.3 with Java 23.0.2 connected to DCC-EX 5.4.6. My turnouts are defined in the DCCEX station as virtual pins. Everything seems to be fine, locos are running and I can switch single turnouts in the turnout table. But if I try to draw my layout in the panel editor I still can operate simple coil driven turnouts but no "complex" ones. Slips and three ways are not working as they should. When I click on the icon of a three ways turnout the turnout will be shown as inconsistant after about 5 seconds. I have to clear it with the <T> command. However the physical positions of the turnout are correct. The turnouts are declared the right way in the dcc base station. I have made some screenshots of this turnout configuration : As following I have made screenshots of the DCC trafic monitor after the first click that blocks the turnout, the with te <T> comand: The second click is fine Third click is like the first, 5 seconds delay and inconsistant state, needs the <T> command Does anybody have an idea ? Thanks ! Guillaume

Building Multiple Trains 2 #operationspro
I know automations can be used to build trains, but there's no random function. I have a small layout and trains normally take 10-25 minutes to run. I may have several trains, some which run at multiple times of the day: mixed passenger/freight mixed freight fuel train express freight Rather than choosing which trains to build and run, I'd like to generate a 'work schedule'.
