NCE name inconsistency
3
Bob, Jim Hanna found that IDENT didn't work for NCE decoder. Checking into this, I found that the NCE name is used differently in the decoderIndex and the decoder files. In decoderIndex.xml, it is shown as "NCE Corp" but in the NCE_D13SR.xml file is is "North Coast Engineering". Once Jim changed the decoder file to read NCE Corp and then reindexed, IDENT "worked" fine. I put worked in quotes because every NCE decoder reports 32 for CV07! Jim is going to call NCE and ask about this. Perhaps they use a different CV for model info. Robin

decoder id and naming confusions
11
Did a DecoderPro install today for a friend, and he immediately ran into confusion on Digitrax and Lenz decoder models. He had a factory installed Digitrax DN146 decoder and a factory installed Lenz LE063. Neither of these types is in the decoder list in the current version of DecoderPro. After checking both mfrs websites tonight, I concluded that the DN146 has the same functions as the DN142, and the LE063 has the same functions as the LE062, both of which are included in DecoderPro. You can see how confusing this would be to a new user though. I can't find anything about the CV07 values on the mfrs websites, so I have no idea if the ID for the DN146 is the same as the DN142. I was somewhat confused by the explanation on the Digitrax site for the 5th character (3rd digit) in the model number. They talked about series 1 and series 2, and then fx3 products, but then a DN141 seems to be the same as a DN142 so I don't know. At least Lenz stated that decoder models that differ in number by 1 are the same thing, just with different connectors. I think at a minimum the decoder names in DecoderPro ought to be looked at. Maybe LE062/3 or something? Not sure what would work for Digitrax - DN142-DN146? Robin Becker Tucson, AZ http://home.earthlink.net/~n3ix/drgw.html

Change the way we present decoder names?
9
I don't have any real ideas about how to better identify decoders. I agree it's a mess, and will be happy to implement whatever you guys think is best. Mark Gurries made a suggestion a while back that I think would help with the user interface. He suggested that, instead of a single long list of decoders that's ordered by manufacturer, that we split it into three selection boxes: (Mfg) (Family) (Model) When you pick a particular item in the "Manufacturer" box on the left, that will restrict the other two to just that manufacturers families and models. If we auto-identify the manufacturer, that also does the restriction, so people just see the ones from that manufacturer. The "Family" one would then be things like "LC Steam" for Soundtraxx, or "FX Decoders" for Digitrax. The idea is to have them be "so close together that they basically all program the same". Even if you're not sure of the particular model, and the program can't figure it out, you'll probably not get in trouble. And then the "Model" box would get down to the specifics, including the number of output wires on a specific model, etc. So if somebody knew that they had a "PQ197PJ", they could look for that in the "Model" column. If they don't see it, perhaps because nobodies ever made a file for it, but know that it's from "Wizzo Co", they could select that under manufacturer (or maybe decoder ID would do that), and look at the families. They they might realize that it's a "CoolChip" decoder, select that family, and be close enough to function. Does this sound like it could help? New GUI for selecting decoder type
I've tried to put together people's suggestions on how to improve the process of selecting a decoder for DecoderPro. Robin, sorry, but I just couldn't get pop-down menus to work well. I'd like your opinions on whether this is an improvement, what should be changed, and even whether we should go back to the old one. To try it, download http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/jmri/jmri-0-9-3-2.zip then install it by copying the unzipped files to your existing directory (you should probably keep your old files just in case). The decoder selection panel is now two lists: on the left, a list of all manufacturers, and on the right a list of decoders. It starts with all decoders we know about listed. If you pick a manufacturer, the right list becomes just those decoder models. The ident button works basically as before. There's new logic for handling unknown manufacturer codes, unknown decoders from known manufacturers, and certain errors. The status at the bottom of the window is much more verbose, and hopefully more informative. I'm looking forward to comments. For suggestion in Europe
Bob, for suggestion in Euerope i need for user groups and friends a german version of the thesis on .. discribtion. I have made a translation from the C/MRI in 1986 for german language. We need it for CTC panels directed by computers. We need it also for train control and signalisation in a Swiss SBB model-layout. Now we control DCC, and we want to do the same. I sent you the text. There are short sentenceses for operating control statements. Is it allowed? dieter ------

new decoder selection list boxes

Bob, Tried out 0-9-3-2 today. Sorry if these comments seem overly critical, and of course they are just one person's opinion. And no I'm not just miffed because the flyouts weren't possible :-) As always I am very appreciative of all your efforts and for the opportunity you have provided for us to provide input and voice opinions. Ok. First I think the programmer display is too busy now. Could the Manufacturer name list be converted to a combo box? That might help. The mfr list is quite long, but many don't have any decoders available. Perhaps suppressing those would make it easier to get through the list. In any case, I would suggest making the mfr default to the one that was selected the last time the programmer was used would be a good thing. It looks like the decoder family names show up in the decoder list. I found this very confusing. This might be ok if there was a way to see that there were two distinct types of items in the list - family names and decoder names. For example indenting, bolding, or something else might make it more apparent, especially if the app would prevent the user from selecting a family name (but I fear that would not be easy to implement). I was able to open a programmer with a family name selected, but the config did not match any of the members of that family for the Throttle-Up decoders I checked. (maybe this is really a problem in the throttle-up decoder files I made?) In the case where there is only one decoder in the family it was especially confusing since it seemed unclear which name to select. For example, under Throttle-Up there is "Soundtraxx DSD Diesel decoders" on one line followed by "DSD Diesel" on the next line. Maybe changing the word "decoders" to "family" would help, but I don't think that will be enough to eliminate all confusion. (Selecting the DSD diesel family name produces a programmer with only 4 columns in the function map, while selecting the DSD diesel decoder name produces the correct function mapping with 12 columns.) Other stuff Would it be possible to update the mfr and decoder list selections when the user selects an item from the "Use locomotive settings for" combo box? This would be a handy way of checking roster entries to see what decoder types were used. I was able to open more than one programmer setup window at the same time. Hadn't noticed this before. Wouldn't think you would want this for programming track use. If Ops mode programming gets supported this might be good, but you would probably want to supress programming of the loco ID in this case? The mfr name list was scrambled when I first ran the update. After reindexing it appeared in alphabetical order. Robin

Jon, You are right, there are lots of shareware and inexpensive commercial programs for handling icons. They let you do nice things, like have transparent areas (i.e. non-rectangular appearance), etc. Let's see if Bob had any artwork in mind first, if not I guess I'll make something simple up. Then we can see if the simple program I already have will be good enough for now. If not then after that I'll check out some of the tools available for download. Subject: Re: [jmriusers] Looking for a brave soul to try a Windows installer Robin, Before I retired I had a program on the computer at work that made icons. Can't remember the name of it. Real simple program but as it was some time ago it was probably 16 color also. Download.com has all sorts of icon creators, like 121 programs. I would try but am not an artist so not sure how they would turn out. Looks like some do a picture capture and create an icon out of it. Looking for a brave soul to try a Windows installer
7
I've created a first version of a Windows installer. I'd like to have somebody try it and tell me how to make it better. Also, does anybody know how to make a "Windows icon file"? If I can get one of those, the installer can set the various icons to something less generic. The installer can be downloaded from: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/jmri/Setup.9.4.exe As you can see from the name, this is a new version. Testing is not complete (the installer is really meant to test the _installer_, not the new version). It has the updated decoder selection GUI of the 9.3 test version, with only a little additional tuning. The Lenz LI100 support seems to be working, though, and there are a couple of other minor improvements. Because this is a test version, it will install "alongside" any existing install you've got. This means that you'll have to set it's preferences, etc, but on the other hand you won't lose your locomotive roster and settings if the installer doesn't work. Thanks in advance, I appreciate the feedback. Bob -- -------------- Bob Jacobsen (Bob_Jacobsen@..., 510-486-7355, fax 510-495-2957) Am working off a huge email backlog, call if it's urgent.

Bob, I downloaded the file and tried it on Windows 98, 2K and XP Pro. All failed with the error message: 'Setup cannot write to the destination file "\lib\javax.comm.properties".' Is there any preparation needed on the computer before running the installation program? Also, when the installer splash screen opens, the program pauses until a key is struck or the mouse is clicked with the cursor within the white area. We probably need a "Strike any key to continue" message or a "Continue" button. Otherwise, it just seems to hang without any clue as to what action to take. Hope this is helpful. I'll be watching for others' responses as well as your comments. But in return they want to keep that first screen as advertising, which seems fair. They were happy to add a "click to continue line". The new screen is in the installer I just uploaded. Java install (was re: Looking for a brave soul to try a Windows installer)
At 5:42 PM -0700 6/28/02, Jerry Drews wrote: >As you must have suspected, my machines did not have the Java software >installed. Actually, I thought that the installer was checking for the presence of Java, and would have mentioned if it didn't find it. Since it hadn't, I was a little confused. But one can never really overestimate the subtlety of Windows. There are apparently some Windows systems that come with _part_ of Java. That was enough to fool my simple test, while still confusing the rest of the installer and probably not letting the program run. I've beefed-up the checking, and added some error handling. Hopefully the new version will work better. Sorry for the extra work. >Having done this, I re-ran the install and it seemed to complete correctly. > >When I clicked on the DecoderPro icon on the desktop, it blinks, but nothing >seems to happen. > >If I execute "decoder pro" from within a command prompt defaulted to the >d:\program files\jmri folder, I get the user interface which looks >reasonable. They are hopefully now fixed in the new upload, thanks for the detailed info. Bob, I made my first attempt to using Decoder Pro. The attempt failed. Here are the steps I took. I downloaded Java 2 plug in from the Sun site. It was version 1.4.0_01. I installed it on the same machine I am currently running Winlok 2.1e successfully from com1. I downloaded Decoder Pro 0.9.3.3 and installed it on the very same machine. I am currently using a MS100. My system is a Dell GX1, P600, 256MB Ram and plenty of HD space. When I tried to launch DP I received the message "Failed to set the current baud rate for the MS100. Port is set to 9600baud. See readme file for more info. The baud rate is grayed out at 16600. What did I do wrong. Al

2nd try at Windows installer
2
I've made a second try at a Windows installer. If all goes well (hah!), this will be the distribution form for Windows from now on. The installer can be downloaded from: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/jmri/Setup.0.9.3.3.exe The changes include: New icons from Robin Becker - thanks! It's starting to look like a real program... Fix of the null reference crash located by Alex Shepherd Shortcut and program items now function properly Improved check for Java being present; if it's not found, quit installer and take user to the Java download page Preferences are now stored in "Windows standard location". This is a mixed blessing; it's necessary to get the uninstall and reinstall operations to work reliably, but it means that you'll have to search around if you ever need to find the preferences manually. And if you upgrade your Windows version, you might have to re-enter your DecoderPro preferences (probably the least of your problems then, but still a pain) Thanks in advance for trying this, I appreciate any comments, suggestions, etc. Bob -- -------------- Bob Jacobsen (Bob_Jacobsen@..., 510-486-7355, fax 510-495-2957) Am working off a huge email backlog, call if it's urgent.

I think the simplest approach is: 1) Download the installer from http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/jmri/Setup.0.9.3.3.exe and run it 2) If Java is not present, it will take you to a Sun download page & quit. Click the download button on that page, follow any instructions that come up, and wait for it to complete. (It's a big download, and may take some time) 3) Rerun the installer again. It should go OK this time. 4) From the Start Menu -> Programs -> Jmri run the DecoderPro program. A preferences window will pop; select your DCC type (NCE, EasyDCC, etc), comm port, and click "save". You'll be asked if you want to quit, say yes. 5) Restart the program and you're ready to go. (I've not yet updated the README file to use the above steps, will do that soon). You don't need to know anything about Java, and the new installer is supposed to handle all the rest of the details. One problem: Windows XP will _not_ work with a Digitrax LocoNet via a MS100 yet. If you have a Digitrax command station, you'll need to use a LocoBuffer, or wait a week or two.
