Locked Digitrax sound decoder #digitrax

I have a Digitrax system using Version 4.19.5 running on windows 10
One of my locomotives has a DH165LO decoder along with a SFX004 sound decoder. How do I get Decoder Pro to recognize that this is a single unit.

Thanks in advance.?

Phil

Don’t know if this helps, but it was a prior discussion on how to set up dual decoders. I went into the 开云体育 site and searched the messages for ‘dual decoders’.

Interesting question that I have never seen before: combining two decoders into one definition file and subsequently a single roster entry.?
Could be done as these decoder do have a series of shared and not shared CV's.

A custom definition file needs to be built.? Combining Digitrax_SFX.xml with Digitrax_01x3.xml? or portions of both.

There is no JMRI tool to combine two definitions into a single Roster entry.

If this is what your question was about.

In the days of the BLI blue line locos the approach was to lock the sound decoder and program the motor decoder. Then reverse the process. That way any overlapping functions would remain uniquely set. I think that let you use one roster entry for both since they shared an address. I later replaced the dual decoder set up with a single sound unit.?

Do you mean recognized as a single address or do you mean as a single Roster entry ?

Single Roster?? is a tad complicated and would require you create a custom? 'Definition file' combining both the Digitrax_0SFX.xml with the Digitrax_01x3.xml? or portions of them.?

There is no JMRI tool to do this.

Marc

Single roster entry would also mean you can't reliably read back values anymore - two decoders on the program track... which would you expect to respond?

I think, now there were two entries. One for motor decoder one for sound. They shared a common address, this the locking step to program and/or read each one.?
Then again reading was often problematic at that time anyway, except for the simplest decoders.?

Phil,
These are actually two decoders in one Lok. So you may need to program them separately.
Look at the CV15/16 protocols.?

This is similar to the Blue Line Loks that has OEM sound, but required a regular decoder to control the motor.
Most folks I know installed an actual sound decoder to decrease the hassles managing two decoders in one Lok.

Basically you can’t, because it isn’t a single decoder. It’s two decoders and you will need to treat it as such.

Furthering Marc’s response:

?

My recollection is that the SFX004 ‘Sound Bug’ was specifically designed as an add-on sound decoder for Digitrax motor decoders.? There are ?‘common’ CV’s were both decoders ‘should’ be programmed the same and ‘exclusive’ CV’s, not included in the motor decoder, for sound customization.?

?

The SFX004 manual says:

?

QUOTE?? The SoundFX? sound CVs in the range of CV140 to CV256 let you customize your decoder without having to reprogram or change the installed sound scheme.?

?

Standard decoder CVs in the range of CV01 to CV120 operate the same as fora non-sound FX3Digitrax decoders (they control motor and light functions etc.) CV58 is used as Master Volume, and CV60 is used to select an alternate scheme, if provided in the sound project.? END QUOTE

?

This allows programming both decoders simultaneously without using a scheme (decoder lock; separate addresses, etc.) to program only 1 decoder at a time.

?

As Marc says, a ‘combined’ decoder definition could be created for Digitrax decoders fitted with a Sound Bug.

?

This is unlike other situations described, using a sound only decoder from one manufacturer with a motor decoder from another.? Many of these combinations often have conflicting CV assignments.

?

My 2 cents.

Thank you for your input. I will look again at the sound decoder instructions. Hopefully it will be successful.

Thanks again for your help.

You still have not clarified what your ultimate goal was ??? Two decoders on one address ?? Both decoders showing in the same Roster entry and not having to open
two definition/roster entries to program ?

Since the shared CV's must be on the same value and all others are not shared, it makes no difference that I can see.

The SFX series and particularly the SFX04 (and SFX06 that replaced it) Soundbug was designed to? be used with the DH165xx series of Digitrax decoders.

Marc

With the old SFX 004 and a motor Decoder in the same machine. it was advisable? to fit a miniature switch and wire? the decoders up to it to be able to turn one off while programing the other one ,then turning both? back on again afterwards if this is what you want to do with them ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ??????????????????? Barry

Having looked at both definition files, I do not see why you would go to the trouble of adding the switch in this specific case.?
Since the DH165xx are fully compatible with the SFX specs, the SFX04 and DH165xx get along just fine.
They share about 10 CV's of which only 4 are critical (CV1, CV17, CV18, CV29). But since you want both decoders on the same address, no big deal.

Now if you used the SFX004 (or SFX006) or any SFX sound decoder? with some other non-SFX compatible motor decoder,? that is different but not what the question was about.

I put together a definition file that combines the SFX and DH165XX? data. This will create a single roster entry.? Need it tested as I do not own any SFX or DH165xx series? decoders.
It gets listed as? 'Series 3 DH165xx, FX3, Silent, readback' ? .. I wonder if it is event worth it. Others without the Soundbug will probably get confused as to which and why the sound does not work for them
when " the tab is there ".

Are you interested in it Phil ?

My problem was that the sound decoder was not working when the motor decoder was.?

I did not know that both decoders had the same CV s so that I could get the sound on the motor decoder.?

Thanks for all the information and insight, I’m still learning.

I think that’s not an entirely correct interpretation. I understood the shared CVs enabled the sound decoder to receive throttle inputs (and others) so it could match engine, cylinders and exhaust speed etc. ?So the overlap was in the sound unit, instead of the motor decoder.?

As always I could be interpreting this incorrectly.?
