DecoderPro Opens every time as a new install
Team,
?
I really need some help on this issue.? I posted on it a couple weeks back and got zero replies.
?
At the museum we have a Dell PC running Windows 10 and Java 11.? Currently JMRI version 5.10 is running on the machine.? Every time JMRI opens it is a new install running the set-up wizard where we have to choose the Sprogg unit, the com port, etc.? It also does not remember that there should be a roster of locomotives.? ?I uninstalled the JMRI software by selecting uninstall in the apps window.? I confirmed that all directories are removed from the system.? I re-installed JMRI.? There is no change in the behavior.? Save locos to the Roster, it recognizes them until the next time decoder pro is started and then it opens as a new install with the wizard wanting you to choose Sprogg, com port, etc.? Once you do that it comes up with no roster.
?
I'm at my wits end on this one.? Can someone offer suggestions or ideas to try.

George, Before starting DecoderPro, use the file manager and go to C:\Users\<username>\JMRI. ?Replace <username> with the name of the Windows user used for logon. You should see a similar list of files as shown here. You probably will not have the PanelProConfig2.properties file or the jython directory unless you also use PanelPro. In the log directory there will be session.log and messages.log files. ?Upload the messages.log file to the group's ProblemsBeingWorkedOn file folder. Thanks Dave, I will try to get over there on Friday morning to get the information. George ronn On Tue, Mar 25, 2025 at 2:29?PM Dave Sand via <ds=[email protected]> wrote:

Dave, the JMRI under the user name path is completely blank. ?Most of the folders/files you listed are available under the Program Files (x86) folder but Log is not one of them.
?
if I run Decoder Pro it creates all the folders and files you specified in a temporary directory that is created each day the PC starts up. ?This PC does not have access to the internet, so I am going to copy the message file to a thumb drive and load it when I get home.
?
I suspect that the lack of internet service to this PC may be the source of the problem as I believe windows is creating the new temp folder each time the PC is started.

George, According to the messages.log file, Windows is launching JMRI in what is known as a "sandbox". ?This is an isolated and temporary environment. ?When JMRI is stopped, the sandbox is destroyed. Since I rarely use Windows, someone else will need to figure out is happening. In the meantime, you can look at Windows S Mode: ?. This might be forcing JMRI into a sandbox. You can also look at any anti-virus settings., ?Dave Sand ----- Original message ----- From: "Glikestrains via groups.io" <Glikestrains=[email protected]> Subject: Re: [jmriusers] DecoderPro Opens every time as a new install Date: Friday, March 28, 2025 11:09 AM Dave, the JMRI under the user name path is completely blank. ? 开云体育Might also be worth checking that this IS Windows running stand-alone on a pc, and not virtual Windows environment under some other OSPhil F On 28 Mar 2025, at 17:09, Dave Sand via groups.io <ds@...> wrote:

Your log shows a folder named "C:\Users\TEMP.WINDOWS-T0ML932.003\JMRI" that Dave refers to as a "sandbox" and this suggests that some antivirus might have interfered with either the installation of the distributed folder or the execution of the program app.??
?
Since you stated that your club does not have an internet service connection, the antivirus suggestion might be a misleading rabbit hole, but checking for that possibility could provide some new clues. ?Some other program running or or some setting on your computer has forced that decision at run time. ?
?
Our club does not have an internet connection either.? We run PanelPro 5.10 on a Windows10 computer for the layout and DecoderPro 5.11.3 on a windows 7 computer for our workbench.? Both computers using Zulu Java version 17 with only a few hiccups during the installation process.? ?The layout computer is hardwired to the WiFi router.? There is no antivirus running on either machine.??
?
The layout and the workbench both use Digitrax DCS 210 connections, but that is extraneous to this puzzle.
?
Updates are carried in on memory sticks but one member has been advocating using a cellphone hotspot connection.? We have not tried that.

Thanks Cliff, Quick question, are you using a password on the windows 10 log in? ? I noticed earlier that when I log in using the club password, and since there is no internet connection, Windows puts up a message after it accepts the login password that it is creating a temporary profile.? I suspect this is why Windows keeps making the new temp folder each time it is started. I’ve ordered an inexpensive Wi-Fi router to connect to the PC (this PC has an Ethernet port but no wifi card) to use my cell phone to connect to the internet to see if this will correct the problem. Thanks Phil, It is definitely a Dell Windows 10 PC, not a virtual machine.? George Ronn On Fri, Mar 28, 2025 at 12:30 PM Phil G via <phil=[email protected]> wrote:

Cliff; A friend?was having that trouble plus a couple of others on a new install.? I told him to just select a new decoder (NMRA Raw Cvvs 1-255),? then select save.? It started a Roster of 1 entry for him, but got him past that situation.? If you have an already existing roster, you could locate it then just do IMPORT Copmlete?Roster under File to reload you existing roster. "Quick question, are you using a password on the windows 10 log in?"
?
Neither of our computers require a password to log in.? Any member who gets there first, just turns on the computer.??
?
Both computers have OS batch files from the DOS era that automatically start the appropriate app and handle a few housekeeping chores,??
?
The entire building is powered down when the last member leaves to save on the electric bill.
?
"Windows puts up a message after it accepts the login password that it is creating a temporary profile."
?
That is not something that I have ever seen on any windows computer.? I seem that it might be your most important clue as to where to search for the root cause of the problem.? A quick search for windows creates a temp user profile yielded too many hits to resolve here, but the first one led to:
?
Good luck deciphering that.

Thanks Cliff, I suspected that the login password not having access to the internet for Windows to confirm the account has something to do with this. George On Fri, Mar 28, 2025 at 2:03 PM Cliff Anderson via <cliffaa=[email protected]> wrote:

George,

As a long delayed afterthought, it should be said that this windows 11 laptop is almost always carried to the club and requires the login process when opened while there.?
?
We are developing a large expansion to our layout and my team is responsible for installing and testing the LCC electronics.? Much of that is done from home, but the critical work has to be verified while connected to the LCC network.??
?
My password cannot be verified via the internet while there.??
?
Tomorrow while getting ready to go home, I will shut it off and restart it to see if I can duplicate your problem.

George,

One - admittedly unlikely - suggestion that no-one has mentioned is to check if the account you use on the Windows PC at the museum is part of the "Guests" group.? If it is, then by design Windows will reverse any changes made during your session and start fresh the next time you login.
?
To check this, you need to open a command prompt with admin access, then type the command:
net user <username>
then press Enter.? NOTE: <username> is the name you are logged in to Windows with.
?
Down near the end of the list you should see information on "Local Group Memberships" and "Global Group Memberships".? If either of these list "Guests", then Windows is doing what it is supposed to do by resetting the account at each login. |
