Locked How to identify correct decoder in loco #soundtraxx

I just purchased a new Athearn RTR SD40-2 that came with a Soundtraxx sound decoder. When I put it on my stand alone programming track which is connected through a Sprog 3 to my computer and go into Decoder Pro and select new loco I get the entire list of Soundtraxx decoders. How do I identify the correct one?

If DeciderPro can’t tell the difference, then the cvs it’s read aren’t telling it enough information (or more likely SoundTraxx don’t provide enough information) to tell them apart

Do you have any clues from the packaging/instructions?

Phil G

PS Or Google???or??

The box says Tsunami 2 while the sheet enclosed within the box says Econami. ?The Athearn parts list shows it had an Athearn Quick Plug that either has an 8 or 9 pin plug. ?I don’t think that there is an Econami decoder that has a plug. ?They are either an atlas style decoder or a 21 pin decoder so I have no idea. ?I really don’t want to pull off the shell if I don’t have to die to all the wires. ?

Check the part number on the decoder:? Tsunami: TSU-21PNEM8 | 885809 Economi: ECO-21PNEM | 882006

NYNH&H, Old Colony Division, Cape Cod Branch (1949-1959)
[DB150][PR3][QuadLN_S][JMRI 5.3.5]

As well as checking the part, also look at the version of your
DecoderPro/JMRI. The loco you have may be newer than your DP version and do
can’t be expected to know about it. Current JNRI is 5.2 or test 5.3.5.
Note to the 5.0 and above need Java 11 and not Java 8.

David,

The link I'm including is to a Soundtraxx document that discusses how to use CV values to
identify their decoders. Even if the version of your JMRI/DecoderPro installation is out of date,
you can manually read the CV's and make a determination yourself.

Note that newer decoders tend to have the ability to identify specific decoder versions in great
detail, while older decoders (when the need wasn't quite as well known or manufacturers didn't
always pay close attention to these details) will only identify down to a "family" of decoders.

Hope this helps.

Thanks.? Printed it out and will give it a try.??

Is your JMRI up to date? If not, I strongly recommend that you get it up
to date.

Mick, I have an older Dell PC that has windows 7 so I am not sure if it will run Java 11 or not. Having trouble identifying what version of Java I currently have. Had JMRI version 5.0 and upgraded last night to 5.2 but understand I must have Java 11 installed so that is where I am.

Walt, thanks for the document on how to use CV’s to identify decoders. I put loco on program track and here is what I got: cv8 is 141, cv7 is 71, cv105 is 1, cv106 is 2, cv253 is 3, cv254 is 2, Cv255 is 9 and Cv 256 is 43.

So not sure if I picked correct decoder identified on DP or not but I selected Tsunami 2 Diesel -TSU-2200 EMD diesels.

Mick

I have a problem as well - when DP reads a Tsunami 2 it sees CV8=141 and CV7=71 it then reads the others BUT - it sits for a while looking at CV259 and then says no such decoder. It does the same for an old Soundtrax decoder from 2001.

I hope an update soon will fix this little bug.

David,
The easiest?way to see what version of Java you have is to open a cmd window and type java -version

Well I guess being over 70 is a problem in terms of knowing how to do things on a computer. ?I am running windows 7. ?I clicked on the start button and in the search box typed cud and a program cmd.exe popped up and I hovered mouse it and right clicked and then clicked on run as administrator. ?I got a black box that said administrator:C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe. ?Next to c:\windows\system32> where the cursor was blinking I inserted Java-version and I got that it was not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
What did I do wrong. ?Sorry I am unable to do this.

You’re nearly there

There’s a SPACE between Java & -version. It’s a COMMAND “Java” followed by the option “-version”

Like this: (note, on a Raspberry Pi I need to put TWO hyphens before “version”. On Windows you just need one?

This shows I have Java 11 installed?

Ok I have verified that I am running JMRI 5.2 and Java 11. ?When I click the new loco tab on DP it pulls up every Tsunami 2 diesel decoder plus every Tsunami 2 Diesel OEM Genesis decoder plus every Tsunami 2 electric and steam decoder so same result. ?Flip a coin I guess.

If it works reading stuff from the decoder with JMRI 5.2 then your Java is
fine and you’re good to go

I’d suggest upgrade to 5.3.6 just out which I think fixed that Tsunami
identification issue. If not, explore the Soundtraxx tech ref manual for
those CVs off their web site.

Something is wrong here.

The SoundTraxx document cited shows that there has been plenty of info supplied by the manufacturer about distinguishing their products.

If the JMRI is up to date, the additional CVs read should narrow the particular model much better than what you are relating.

If in doubt, don't flip a coin. Read the CVs discussed in the doc yourself to see which decoder to select.

Regards

Have you clicked Read Type from Decoder?

Yes that is what I always do with a new loco or install to add to my roster. I don’t have many Soundtraxx equipped locos (mostly wow or esu) so this is the first time I have encountered having to choose from the entire list. Further complicated by the box showing Tsunami 2 and the literature showing Econami. By eliminating the obvious I settled on TSU-2200 EMD Diesels.

It has not been discussed, but the newest run of Athearn RTR SD40s have a TSU2 board instead of Econami. Because this is a new release, JMRI has not been updated yet. I had experienced this with the most recent release of the P42s. It was not there in an older versions but appeared in an updated release.? So allow the JMRI team to get the updated info from Soudtraxx and it'll be OK.
