Locked Arrow keys on laptop #jmrithrottle

Question....
Is there a way to reverse action on the right and left arrow keys on my laptop when running trains in the throttle window?? Seems they're opposite what they should be.? I feel the right arrow should be forward and left arrow should be reverse.? Thanks! ?

That's a great idea.? FYI EngineDriver let's you do that on the fly for each throttle individually and it is very handy.

I am not sure there is enough information here.? Something is different, because on my PC, the on-screen Throttle window uses up and down arrows for forward and reverse respectively, and left and right for increase/decrease throttle. I am using JMRI 4.19.2ish on a Win10 with LocoNet Simulator.

Sorry, but i can see how you could have read my question differently than what I meant.? I'm wanting to change the right and left arrow keys so the the right arrow key moves train in forward and the left arrow key moves train in reverse.? I'm using the "Display shunting speed slider (from -100 to 0 to 100)" option. ?

Hi Roger,
I'm not sure if it will help but in the early days of windows (3.1 Ithink) there was a utility called keymap or something similar which would allow the user to change the character of any key. Perhaps something like it still exists for win10??

I cannot find that anywhere on my JMRI setup.? What context do you see that?? Are you in Dispatcher using AutoTrains for example?? I presume that you are seeing a throttle window on the laptop, not on a phone or tablet which would change things.

Yes, I'm using a throttle window on my laptop.? When I put the mouse pointer over the slider bar in the throttle window, I can run the speed with the roller button on my mouse. With the slider bar window active, I can use the right and left arrow keys on the keyboard to work the speed slider bar (which I have formatted horizontally).? However, the left and right arrow keys works the slider bar in the opposite direction.? In other words, when I hit the right arrow key, the slider bar goes left, and when I hit the left arrow key, the slider bar goes right.
So my originally question is, can you reverse that direction in the JMRI program so that the slider bar goes right when you hit the right arrow, and left when you hit the left arrow?? Thanks!... ?

I see what you mean. This would require a DEV team member? to write up the code for the throttle. Option to switch around the left/right arrow keys.

This is all imbeded in the code and not a simple task for non-dev person..? I tried looking for the proper module involved (on GITHUB which contains the original code) ) and it is not simple.

No one ever mentioned the fact the left/right arrow keys are inverted logiv.. Guess no one ever bothered with it,

I've opened regarding this.

Would the following mapping be desired (this seems to me to be the one that most closely matches the visual layout of the throttle and other handheld throttles)?

  • up -> faster
  • down -> slower
  • left -> reverse
  • right -> forward

Randall

Randall,

If it's not going to be configurable, existing users who are either happy with the current situation or at least imprinted on it will start to howl, won't they?

I guess making it configurable would make everyone happy?... ?
I'm not a programmer, but wondered if this can be done and be submitted as a suggestion? Didn't know if any of the volunteers who are involved in writing and creating JMRI will see this suggestion and give it consideration maybe?... ?

I'm thinking that making the mapping user selected is the only true
solution. Some keyboards make the left-right easier to hit than up-down (or
the other way around) so the physical hardware would make it more sensible
which choice a user might want. Particularly if the throttle allows for a
yard mode which takes out the forward/reverse and mingles it with speed. I
would say that two other keys are needing to be considered: Idle and Estop.

Making more of the software (JMRI and WiThrottle) flexible also will help
those who are trying to use things like game controllers.

For whatever reason, the computer I was on last night, the right arrow was
speeding up and the left arrow was slowing down. That was a Win7 with
4.17.something.

???
I'm set up with NCE Powercab interfaced with a laptop (Windows 10) and the JMRI program (4.18) and using Withrottle on a tablet.
The laptop I'm using has a shorter/smaller up and down arrow and the larger right and left arrow.
Like I was saying, not sure how hard it would be, but I would recommend the option to invert or give options in the program to allow a user to configure the arrow keys to their liking.
I love working with this JMRI program!? Makes model railroading fun!
But it sure is a different learning curve, especially for us novices.... ? ? (I finally figured out a control panel to work my 11 turnouts through my Q-Snap boards I installed.)
