Locked JMRI and NCE

开云体育

Hello,

?

I have JMRI connected to my layout with an NCE USB interface. I have software for the interface using COMM4. Since originally installing JMRI, I updated my computer to Windows 10. When I try to start DecoderPro I get this message in a window: “Unable to create connection "NCE2" (N2). ?Serial port COM4 is in use. Unable to run startup actions due to earlier failures.” I believe I have deleted “NCE2(N2). When I ignore message and continue to DecoderPro and select a locomotive the following error message appears at bottom of screen: “Service mode program NCE is offline and Operator mode program NCE is offline”. I spoke with Ed at NCE today and he said problem is with JMRI and Windows 10.

What do I do? When I had Windows 7 Pro, I was able to set up 5 locomotives.

?

Thank you,

?

I dont know what the experts do, but when I get a com port error starting JMRI in Windows 10 I edit the com port setting and restart JMRI.

Windows seems to change the com port arbitrarily when booting.

Hi Ken,

I recommend that you download the drivers for USB interface and reinstall them.???? I have found in the past that whenever Windows 10 installs updates the SILABS drivers have problems and need to be reinstalled.

Ken W,

It is trying to open COM4 for the NCE connection. Use the Windows Device
Manager to confirm which COM port it is using and that the driver is ok.
Plugging and unplugging the connection at the computer should make it show
up and go away from the 'Ports' list in the Device Manager. Right click on
the COMx to see if it thinks the driver install is ok. That's in the
properties.

Ken S,

The cut/paste of the console log you sent shows JMRI asking for COM4, but
the system saying COM4 not found. Insure everything is connected and powered
up before starting JMRI. Also follow what I said before about using Windows
Device Manager to confirm the hardware is really loading up at COM4 and no
errors with drivers. We've found that Win10 updates sometimes disables
drivers and they need to be loaded again.

Hello Ken C.,

I double checked in Device Manager USB Interface using COMM4. When I start
JMRI the Decoder Screen at bottom has NCE connected in green message. When I
select a loco to program, the message changes to offline. How can I check
that the USB Interface hardware connections are ok?

What should happen is it shows green thinking there is a connection. Within
10 seconds, it probes the interface to see if it replies right. If that
fails, the connection turns red. You should do a cut/paste of the console
log again so we can see that the port opened ok. Typical issue at this point
(assuming the open worked) is the baud rate doesn't match.

Now my next question is to confirm which make of interface and command
station you are using. That will help clue me as to the next things to try
to explain. The current console log will tell me what you are trying, but
that might not be the right match for the hardware you have.

Ken S: Do you have JMRI 4.16 installed as suggested earlier in this thread? Automatically defaulting to offline simulator mode when a connection problem occurred was a feature of older JMRI versions.

Hello,

?

I have been doing some experimenting. I now have active JMRI 4.12 on my computer. I tried installing JMRI 4.16 without erasing 4.12. That did not work. I unstalled everything and tried JMRI 4.14. That did not work. I reinstalled 4.12 and now JMRI works with my NCE. Why?

Ken S,

I think this is a direction to try.

1. First thing is cut/paste the console log from starting up with your
working 4.12 system. This gives us a baseline of your setup.
2. Make sure you open/save any panel files you are using.
3. Make a minor change in the preferences, something you can change back,
like add a startup action.
4. Those steps make sure the files are written at the 4.12 version level.
5. Update to 4.16.
6. Startup with 4.16 and cut/paste the console log. This will show what is
or isn't not happening.

Make no other changes. From this we can see the where you start and finish.
Then we can give meaningful comments.

Sometimes there are changes that make updates along the way. If someone is
jumping too many versions, the old version might not be able to be correctly
read by the new version. Making regular updates, the issue doesn't come up.
For a while a new version will still read the old version files, but it is
using old code we have replaced with new methods. Eventually we clean up
things and remove that old code. That is when somebody who didn't do
updates, and then did a load/save to save all new way entries will have an
issue. It happens very seldom, but making a few more steps here should
figure out if this is a part of your problem or if something else is
happening.

You might also use the Help->Upload Debug Info, it will send a package or
details like your profile and log files, with some system details too. That
may also give us more clues when it isn't working.

Ken,

The key in either version is this:

2019-07-24 09:15:08,453 jmrix.AbstractMRTrafficController WARN -
Timeout on reply to message: AA consecutive timeouts = 0 in
nce.NceTrafficController [nce.NceTrafficController Transmit thread]
2019-07-24 09:15:08,562 nce.NceConnectionStatus WARN -
Incorrect or no response from NCE command station [nce.NceTrafficController
Transmit thread]

This says the USB is not responding. We get the port open in both cases, but
no answer. So the next question is what are the jumper settings on the USB
device? All on, all off, or which? If all are on, then you need to click the
'additional info' in the connection and try 19,200 baud rate. We should be
seeing an answer that tells which version of interface you have. It should
be something like version 7.3.* or 6.3.*. If we see that message, then we
are talking to the USB device ok. If we are still having issues, then we'd
start looking at the cables and a few other settings on the command station.

Marc and Ken,

So either the baud rate is wrong or you blew the card by accident.? That is if you did not change jumper settings ever.

There are other possibilities for the AA timeout, such as a failure of the 12VDC power via the cab bus cables to the PCP, or a locked-up NCE USB board (the Cab Bus LED will be stuck on).

The first test is to not touch any jumpers, but simply try the existing setup at both 9,600 and 19,200 baud. No matter what other JMRI or jumper setting, on or other (but never both) should respond with a Vx.x.x version number. That's a first goal before getting the correct final settings. If the "try both speeds" test fails, we need to look at hardware/driver/cable issues.

Note that you should completely reset the NCE USB (by unplugging/replugging both cables between the two speed tests.

Dave H,

Just to remind me, if the cab id is not valid in the USB, we still get the
AA command acknowledged, but we'd not be able to talk to the command
station, correct? I don't think that is any part of this issue, but checking
what I remember.

Hello Ken C.

Since the LED lights do not work, I am checking with NCE today. I guess the
problem must me with the USB interface. I will recap conversation with NCE
after I talk with Ed.
