1) Did you do it yourself using LokProgrammer.
2) Did you buy it from a vendor who had preprogrammed it?
3) ESU does not load sound Files

If it is old enough, it may not support anything but the standard NMRA registers. Try reading register 1 in register mode.
I have a couple of old decoders I have to do this with.
