Random thing to check; Are the phones actually connecting to the router? They

I did test this, I put a phone in airplane mode, then turned on wifi,
and I could surf the internet.
That does not actually mean too much. When you "turned on wifi", does the
phone say what SSID it connected to. I know that *my* phone lists the network
(SSID) it connects to,

Yes, the phones are connecting to household wifi. This layout is out in a very rural area and there are no other SSIDs visible.

I've had similar "can't connect" errors while using a smartphone.
Usually it's been caused by the two computers (phone and JMRI computer)
being on separate networks. That's easy to do with phones, since they
can often "connect to the Internet" through either their cell service
(such as Verizon 5G) or through a Wifi signal that they can receive
(such as the one in your building).

But they can't use both at the same time. If the two computers are on
different networks, they can't connect to each other. Cell phones will
often automatically switch from one system to the other depending on
which one is stronger at the time.

In my case, the layout is in a room which is fairly far from my Wifi
router. So sometimes the cell signal is stronger than the wifi and the
phone automatically switches to the cell signal. Then it can't connect
to the JMRI computer.

One solution is, when you are using your phone to work the layout,
disable the cell interface (may be called "data" on the phone. That will
keep the phone on your wifi so it can talk to the JMRI computer.

I don't think I tried this but we are in the basement where there is a fairly weak cell signal and it's never been a problem before, but of course, different router so that could change everything. At one point we brought the router downstairs and I was sitting right next to it so it seems unlikely the cell service was stronger. I will try this next week when I'm back over there.

I¡¯ve missed it in the thread. Is your WiThrottle server computer
attached via WiFi to the network, or via a wired connection? If wired, ignore the rest of this post.

The server PC normally connects to the home network via wireless. One of my tests was to disable wifi on the pc and hard wire it to the router. I then confirmed that everything else works (eg can get websites etc) but still no wiThrottle joy.

I'll get the Engine Driver log when I'm over there again next Tuesday. Meanwhile, as a temporary expedient, I'm going to lug my development box over there and set up an isolated standalone setup, that should get us through the next op session.

Many thanks for all of the ideas.
