I've had similar "can't connect" errors while using a smartphone.? Usually it's been caused by the two computers (phone and JMRI computer) being on separate networks.?? That's easy to do with phones, since they can often "connect to the Internet" through either their cell service (such as Verizon 5G) or through a Wifi signal that they can receive (such as the one in your building).??

But they can't use both at the same time.? If the two computers are on different networks, they can't connect to each other.?? Cell phones will often automatically switch from one system to the other depending on which one is stronger at the time.?

In my case, the layout is in a room which is fairly far from my Wifi router.?? So sometimes the cell signal is stronger than the wifi and the phone automatically switches to the cell signal.? Then it can't connect to the JMRI computer.

One solution is, when you are using your phone to work the layout, disable the cell interface (may be called "data" on the phone.?? That will keep the phone on your wifi so it can talk to the JMRI computer.

Tim,
First debug step for EngineDriver is to enter the IP and port manually, then find and post the exact (and complete) error message here. You can find it in the EngineDriver log.
Note: I don't have T-Mobile, but I have a similar Verizon 5G device and it works fine.

Did that, unfortunately I didn't record the exact wording but the log basically said "can't connect from ${ONEIP:PORT} to ${THEOTHERIP:PORT}". ?It'll be next week Tuesday before I can get back over there and get the exact text if that isn't enough to go on.
