I have tried to join the two red squares on my track plan: Keyshift down, press mouse on one connection point, and drag to the second connection point

A track line appears on my plan, but on releasing the key and mouse ‘actions’, the track line disappears.

I’m sure I am making a basic mistake, but guidance would be appreciated/
