Instead of the values of the slider being from left to right (like normal) why not from top to bottom. It would keep the sliders close together.

That sounds like a good idea, so I did some experiments to see how
hard it would be. Getting the fields to work turned out to be pretty
easy, but there's a problem with screen space. Putting a space for a
number above or below the sliders forces them farther apart; the
value field is wider than the slider. With 28 values (e.g. a 28-slot
speed table), putting a value above each makes the panel really,
really wide.

I put a screen shot of this in the "photos" area, see

file shows the numbers above the sliders.

Another way to do it would be to use horizontal sliders, which move
left & right. Numeric fields would fit nicely next to those; see the
"Horizontal.jpg" photo for an example. The problem with this is that
the sliders no longer really function as a "graph" of the speed
response; the vertical stack of sliders it much harder to interpret.

Any ideas on how to lay this out so it works well?
