Nelson,
On Linux and macOS JMRI is never "installed over" a previous release.
I rename the previous install and then installl the new release. ?If there is a problem I can rename the new release and the old release which is an easy rollback.
A related point is that custom components are never added to the installed location. ?They are stored in the user files location.

Installed 4.17.7 over 4.17.6 seemed to work ok until I looked at my web served panels.
We use the built in web server to display panels on raspberry pi using the web browser. these have worked fine, until I up dated to 4.17.7 then the panels would display but none of the sensors or lights would display properly, any sensor displayed as a question mark and any light as an X. I checked the Panel Pro panels on the JMRI system any they were displaying properly and were allowing panel function and control. Restoring to 4.17.6 repaired the issue.
