Have you considered getting an NCE-USB instead of a PR4? That allows connecting the computer running JMRI to the PowerCab. For programming purposes, the PowerCab is one of the two top choices (together with Sprog), the PowerCab having the edge in most opinions I've read. That would give you DecoderPro programming at the club for a very small outlay.

Marc, Thanks for the clarification.? I already have all of the parts for the LocoShield route, so this gives me the opportunity to start working with things with no further investment.
As for the PR4, the programming track option is the biggest plus for me.? We use NCE at the club I belong to and don't have JMRI there (yet).? Having a portable Decoder Pro option using a laptop and a PR4 would allow me to work with locos more easily at the club.? Right now we have a PowerCab in the back room for decoder programming.? Serviceable, but limited.
And yes, I do really like the DIY stuff.? Can't help myself sometimes.
