Locked SPCoast LocoShield, Arduino, LocoLinx - enough for JMRI?
I'm in the early stages of constructing a layout and have always intended to use JMRI as a part of it.? I initially was going to use DCC++ for a command station but also wanted to use Loconet for a number of things.? I recently got a good deal on a Digitrax DCS100 and throttle so plans are shifting.? My question is: if I have one of the SPCoast (John Plocher) LocoShields mounted on an Arduino Uno running LocoLinx.ino and have it connected to my device running JMRI (hopefully a Raspberry Pi4, but if not, a Win10 machine), would that be an adequate interface for JMRI to Loconet?? I don't see it on the supported hardware list and my attempts to search the messages here for locoshield or locolinx came up empty.? Ultimately I will likely get a Digitrax PR4, but wondering if - for now - this would work to get me started?? (I already have the LocoShield boards because I wanted a few for other projects.)
Thanks, Mike |
It should as that was the intention. But why go to the hassle if a PR4 is the ultimate goal ?? . Why a PR4 ?
All you need is a Locobuffer-USB to interface your computer and the? DCS100.? Unless you are really into the DIY stuff which I have nothing against. The PR4 is only required if you plan on delving into Digitrax Sound projects and Digitrax sound decoders.. Marc |
Marc,
Thanks for the clarification.? I already have all of the parts for the LocoShield route, so this gives me the opportunity to start working with things with no further investment. As for the PR4, the programming track option is the biggest plus for me.? We use NCE at the club I belong to and don't have JMRI there (yet).? Having a portable Decoder Pro option using a laptop and a PR4 would allow me to work with locos more easily at the club.? Right now we have a PowerCab in the back room for decoder programming.? Serviceable, but limited. And yes, I do really like the DIY stuff.? Can't help myself sometimes. Thanks, Mike |
Hi Mike, Have you considered getting an NCE-USB instead of a PR4? That allows connecting the computer running JMRI to the PowerCab. For programming purposes, the PowerCab is one of the two top choices (together with Sprog), the PowerCab having the edge in most opinions I've read. That would give you DecoderPro programming at the club for a very small outlay. Wouter On Mon, 11 Nov 2019 at 01:01, <gngsound@...> wrote: Marc, |
Wouter - sorry for not replying (thought I did).? At the moment the club does not plan to set up a DecoderPro programming station - not enough bench space for a permanent monitor/mouse/kybd.
The good news is that I got the LocoShield configuration working (with a Pi 4).? I got tripped up for a while because the LocoLinx sketch for the Uno had TX set for Pin 6 and the LocoShield uses Pin 7.? As a result I could monitor LocoNet OK but couldn't get a soft throttle to work.? I was typing up a message to post here for some help and decided to look at the sketch again when that detail caught my eye. |
