As Dick has said, a bad idea. The ground wire needs to be parallel to the signal wires and go directly to the AIU ground. To do otherwise invites trouble, ranging from false triggering to voltage spike damage.
The reasons are that:
- Your input connection becomes a loop antenna prone to picking up electrical noise.
- Your earth paths (part of the loop) will likely be carrying other current, with consequent voltage fluctuations, creating nuisance triggering and possible device damage.
